‘Toys’ for almost 10 year old boy

Hello! Last year my son said he felt a bit disappointed he didn’t get anything to ’play with’ for Xmas. He got what was on his list (a kids fit bit, some sports stuff and books etc) but I think he missed the little kid excitement of new toys.

Can anyone suggest something for that age group which may fit the bill?

Lego! Always Lego!

CookiesAreForSharing · 16/09/2025 08:50

Lego, science kit, archaeology digging kits, electrical circuit set. My son enjoys weaving kits from Hobbycraft, any craft kit really, and all of the above, and he is 15.

Jibberishforever · 16/09/2025 09:07

Ask him. Everyone says construction as it's all boys are alloed but may be he wants a bracelet or craft kit.

RoosterPotato · 16/09/2025 09:11

He does have a loom band kit and loves crafts so the weaving and other craft suggestions are great

Do you have a Costco card? They usually have great craft sets at this time of year.

Streatfeild · 16/09/2025 10:27

I saw a good kit the other day on Wicked Uncle called bracelets for boys.

My ds will be 10 and is not at all sporty or boy-ish. He's enjoyed musical instruments in the past - a drum went down well (I can't remember the type but it is metal and a orb and plays different notes depending on where you hut it rather than just a bang bang kind of drum) and also a smallish keyboard synthesizer (he plays piano but this has effects you can put on tunes etc).

He also likes thinks like the Eugy craft animals. This year he is getting a kind of simple version of a book nook that I think is in his capabilities.

He likes games too as long as I will play them with him - mousetrap, quirkle, cluedo etc. He showed me Hues and Clues in a shop recently and said he had seen it online and it looked fun so I am getting him that too.

And also agree with Lego as an excellent option.

Also have you wandered round a toyshop? I went to Hamleys to look rather than buy and got ideas of things that I just didn't know existed.

Nerf guns still go down well with my 12 year old

wingingit1987 · 16/09/2025 10:32

My older two are 9 & 11. Things they have enjoyed recently:
lego
circuit building kit
gem stone digging kit
warhammer models
dungeons & dragons set

NJLX2021 · 16/09/2025 10:33

does he have any nerf guns?

Not to stereotype but every time I've been to a few Christmases where boys got nerf guns, not just the children but male family members of all ages have had a great time shooting targets (each other).

I remember one Christmas where they were given to a boy.. a target was set up. For the rest of the day, there was a permanent queue of (mostly) men and boys trying to compete.. any new (mostly) man who came in wanted to have a shot and prove himself the best.

Lego is an obvious one, also games that you can all play together might add some excitement back into things. Does he have any media interests? Some boys transition from 'playing toys' to 'collecting toys' when they grow older, and get very excited for things that are about the shows/media they like.. not to play with, but just cool things to have.

Mine likes Airfix building. You get all sorts of levels of difficulty and fill up stocking with paints and brushed.

And last year he loved a big Squishmallow.

Unusual Rubiks cubes are always popular. There are so many different types.

cocobeaner · 16/09/2025 11:06

My sons are 8 and 10 and its a tricky age I think, for "toys". That said my youngest loves lego, loom bands, crochet, sewing, make your own stuffed animal kits - that kind of thing. My eldest has never been crafty but loves art so art supplies are good there. He's not very into "stuff" though and would rather have tickets to the theatre or a gig or something.

Lego is a crowd pleaser though or something like a dart board, board games or card games are good.

herbalteabag · 16/09/2025 11:09

At that age my son loved Warhammer, and also Lego. You can get Warhammer starter sets that are not too expensive.

Tatiepot · 16/09/2025 11:09

I'm considering a ForeverSpin metal spinning top for my 10 year old...the least expensive one works out just over £40 inc postage, so not cheap but looks great fun and a nice mix of skill and luck needed to make it work.

Ophy83 · 16/09/2025 13:52

A magic set or trick? Marvins magic has some good ones

Lemurian · 16/09/2025 14:27

If he likes games how about a 1 player logic-type game? My 9 year old DN loved the one he got last Christmas. You can usually play straight away so good for Christmas day!

Link to one example below but there are lots of different types...

Bibliophage · 16/09/2025 14:39

A Gravitrax type set? I’m having a look around for something like that my son who’s a similar age

persisted · 16/09/2025 14:51

Remote control cars, technic lego, nerf guns

The Science museum shop online is always a good place to start for inspiration

I've just searched the bracelet kit and it's only 19 on Amazon! Looks great too.. thanks

DD is 6, but her almost 10 year old (male) cousin always steals the bow and arrow set we have. He also always asks us to get the Hexbugs out- those seem to be a hit with everyone!

NatalieH2220 · 16/09/2025 20:45

Lego, magnetic tiles, marble run, colouring, slime, board games-the classic ones.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/09/2025 20:49

Gravitrax is great. My dc have also enjoyed circus skills equipment, like a diabolo or devil stick.

Lucked · 16/09/2025 20:54

Lego
Puzzle maze ball/perplexus
Beyblades
National geographic modelling clay dinosaurs - you get the skeleton so easy to model over the top. Or similar little craft like box buddies
Magnetic dart set
