OK, first of all, I know it's still September but we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you.The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to brown, that can only mean one thing- it's time to ignore the waves of Halloween decor all over your local The Range and head to the woods to start picking your own holly for that perfect Kirsty inspired wreath.

We want homemade stuffing recipes perfected by November, the handmade crackers draped in the most delicate of embroidered ribbon, mantle pieces draped in the most Scandinavian of wooden carvings, specialised stamps for the personalised wrapping paper ordered by next week and the word craft to be your official middle name by new year.

Happy ponceing and may Nigel and Nigella's fairy lights guide you on your way to getting the last box of rosemary and sea salt crackers in your own personal Bethlehem.

Such beautiful colours, I think some of the berries might last until Christmas so I could use them in a wreath. Are we still limited to 5 photos a day?

It was a lovely walk, I've been living here for 16 years and I'm still in awe at what a beautiful place it is. I brought a thermos of hot chocolate so we stopped on a bench with a view over the village I didn't take a photo of the actual village but of the forest next to it, even DD acknowledged how nice it was 😅

I love the Lego flower range, have the daffodils, roses and the poinsettia.

That's my Christmas wishlist sorted!

That looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing the photos

No poncing here today. DD3 dragged me round IKEA this morning (very little christmas stuff in yet), then Dunelm - where I bought a set of tiny snowman LED lights, if that counts. DD2 and DH are playing/watching football this afternoon. I've been getting out my winter clothes and packing away the summer wardrobe so the bedroom looks like a bomb site and really could do with a bit of poncing. It's astonishing how all my trousers appear to have shrunk during their time under my bed, too 🤦🏽‍♀️

PinballWizened · 26/10/2025 20:19

Love your photos @AlicePottery

This is the wine bottle wooly jumper. Nobody wants a chilled red.

I have rounded up and laundered the family’s various hats, scarves and gloves.

Also experimented with a dark chocolate and ginger nut tiffin.

Is that gingernuts or ginger and nuts? I can't get the biscuits here but ginger and nuts yes, could you share the recipe if it's the latter? We LOVE ginger and dark chocolate 🤤

Just popping by to say that this lovely baking parchment from hobbycraft caught my eye the other day. It has little gingerbread houses printed on it. Perfect for all your Christmas poncetastic baking needs.

It's £5 for 13 metres, but it's worth checking if you have any of the £2.50 loyalty vouchers as you can use them with no minimum spend. (Or free if you join the club and have a birthday as they send you a £5 voucher!) I think I'm going to use it for wrapping edible gifts.

After posting back when the thread started, I haven't done any poncing due to an unexpected bereavement. However yesterday I marzipanned a cake ready for icing tomorrow, for a friend's wedding at the end of the week. I have also made a dress to wear to the wedding which I am also going to wear to my work Christmas do.

I managed 2 wonder crackers last year so have four more to make, I got the bag out yesterday and might try some more at the weekend

AlicePottery · 27/10/2025 14:27

@Frumpyunicorn sorry for your loss, we also just had a very unexpected death in the family and it's really knocked me for six. I'm trying desperately to distract myself with poncing and pottering about the house.

FurForksSake · 27/10/2025 14:34

I’ve got two weeks before surgery and I will need to try and get on top of things. I want to find my embroidery stuff so that it is all in one place and I can finish my baubles. Where that stuff is lord only knows. I also need to plan my hand painted Christmas cards, another thing I can do sat and still!

FurForksSake · 27/10/2025 14:35

Much sympathy for the unexpected losses.

Thank you, and so sorry to hear about your loss too, be kind to yourself and I hope you find a bit of rest and distraction through your crafting.

AlicePottery · 27/10/2025 16:11

Right, that's enough of that for now, I'll do her accessoires when I'm bored 😂

Mrs Claus looks very glam @AlicePottery

My recipe was
125g ginger biscuits (or rich tea or digestives), crushed
50g sultanas
50g dried cranberries (or glacé cherries)
30g chopped walnuts

75g butter/vegan margarine
50g chocolate (plain/dark or milk)
1tbsp golden syrup

melt the wet ingredients in a saucepan
Mix in the dry ingredients
press down into a tray and set in a fridge
cut into slices before set or eat the whole thing as a hand fruit

You could easily include some stem ginger with the fruit, ginger syrup instead of golden and have plain biscuits

AlicePottery · 27/10/2025 18:41

OMG that sounds divine!

Confusedmeanderings · 28/10/2025 03:27

Mrs Claus looks fab @AlicePottery !

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/10/2025 09:49

Your Mrs Claus is fabulous @AlicePottery I was briefly tempted to have a go, but I just know it would end up looking like a badly made up drag queen. I think I'll stick to candle making.

AlicePottery · 28/10/2025 17:24

Well not much poncing today as I spent the majority of the day outside enjoying the autumn sunshine. I've just come in from getting the garden ready for potential storms tomorrow afternoon, I'm half tempted to go out in the morning to pick all the chilis to make another batch of jam (DH got through the first batch ridiculously quickly) so I've got a few nice jars for emergency Christmas presents.
I ordered some Christmassy cookie cutters which arrived this afternoon, I want to make some easy tree decorations to give out at school to the kids wearing Christmas jumpers on the last day (usually only about 30 participate so it's doable). It'll be a good excuse to try some new clay I bought which is low fire so I can use brighter colours 😀

Peachypips78 · 29/10/2025 11:56

Hi all- been on Mumsnet for years and never spotted this thread! Right up my street as I love to ponce about at Christmas.
@AlicePotterydo you have a pattern for Mrs Claus? I’d like to give her a try if I have time.
Also thinking about the mini Christmas cakes…

AlicePottery · 29/10/2025 12:08

The patterns I use are from mmmcrafts on Etsy, they're really well done. Mrs Clause is the hardest one so far, I struggled a bit at the end. The Christmas stockings were the most fun to make, and the tree topper star is stunning.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 29/10/2025 14:05

Ok so no Christmas cracker pattern gives me as much joy to look at as the Wonder Cracker one.
I went to get the interfacing and I’m hoping my French was good enough but the stuff she recommended isn’t as stiff as I thought it would be. She said it goes rigid when ironed. Does this sound right?
Its not completely flimsy.
What product did you guys use? How thick does it feel?
