OK, first of all, I know it's still September but we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you.The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to brown, that can only mean one thing- it's time to ignore the waves of Halloween decor all over your local The Range and head to the woods to start picking your own holly for that perfect Kirsty inspired wreath.

We want homemade stuffing recipes perfected by November, the handmade crackers draped in the most delicate of embroidered ribbon, mantle pieces draped in the most Scandinavian of wooden carvings, specialised stamps for the personalised wrapping paper ordered by next week and the word craft to be your official middle name by new year.

Happy ponceing and may Nigel and Nigella's fairy lights guide you on your way to getting the last box of rosemary and sea salt crackers in your own personal Bethlehem.

You'll love it, mine is plugged into a normal socket, never had any problems, costs about 5€ for a bisk (850⁰) firing and 8€ for glaze (1260⁰). I make my own glazes although did buy some stroke and coat to mess around with (I used them to decorate last year's Christmas cup that's on my inst page).
I'm deviating from the Mrs Claus pattern again, I'm giving her shoelaces instead of more sequins/beads 😅

Edited

God I'm a bit slow sometimes. I had a good look at the picture and thought "oh I wonder if I should say anything. They look rather like boobs"

DanceWithYourBalloon · 23/10/2025 14:50

@RainbowZebraWarrior those wax melts look divine 🤩

@AlicePotteryI just gave you a follow on Instagram. I have writing in my name.

AlicePottery · 23/10/2025 15:59

I've followed everyone back, no idea who's who which is fine of course (I'm very careful about what I post on here as I've chosen not to be anonymous).
I've progressed reasonably well with Mrs Claus, I painted her face twice, the first attempt was a thing of nightmares, tried to be too realistic, just looked horrendous. Second attempt went for something simpler 😅

Mrs Claus is very glam. I have tons of felt, but my sewing isn't the best so I might have to choose something a little more simple.

Today is candles and Decoupage. Here's yesterday's candles. I also made some bat shaped beeswax melts which DD immediately nicked to give to her pals at school. Decoupage is essentially just me disguising boxes of matches with pretty designs to make them look nicer. I have some vintage Christmas candle boxes, but they don't come put quite yet. Sometimes, other things get Decoupaged by default once the mod podge is in hand, so we shall see what transpires.

@RainbowZebraWarrior great minds! Are you still full tilt with your candle making? I find it difficult to balance crafting for pleasure and business. I used to sew for a living and it’s taken about 10 years before I can enjoy it again!

I used to bake for a living and it took me 6 years to look at an oven again with anything other than dread.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 25/10/2025 19:21

How's everyone doing this weekend? It seems rather quiet chez Poncetastic.

This is the extent of my poncing today (apart from my beeswax candles production line) It's a matchbox wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper to disguise the normal packaging. I did think about buying some lovely Emma Bridgewater matches, but thought I'd try this first and save myself six quid.

For £6 I'd expect Emma to.come and light the candles for me!

I think I may have to give up on the fabric Christmas crackers. It took 2 hours to make one!!!! 9 more just feels too much of a commitment!!

AlicePottery · 25/10/2025 21:56

The first one is always the longest though. Can you make them factory style? Cut out all the pieces in one go them move on to the next step for all of them etc? À la chaîne in French (brain too tired to think of the English translation).

My first one took a day 🤣 and it was rubbish!

I made 5 the next day though. Definitely batch the stages of the process as @AlicePottery suggests

AlicePottery · 25/10/2025 22:56

I've just bought the wondercrack pattern too 😅

PinballWizened · 25/10/2025 23:36

I had a fab day. Kidnapped family to a rural touristy village. Had a beautiful autumn salad with roasted squash in a naice cafe then went round the market and fancy gift shops. All the precious things my mum had coveted earlier in the year were found again and purchased for gifts. Visited a medieval church and went for a blustery walk with sunshine and views. Child collected conkers and jumped in piles of leaves wearing a cute bobble hat. Took the scenic route home then knitted a wooly jumper wine bottle cover. Enjoyed some wine from the mannequin bottle.
99% of my days are not like this but it was properly Poncetastic

Surely they’ll be quicker now you’ve had practice! Try one more before giving up?

I plan to make crackers (as soon as halloweens done I can have Christmas), and if they’re not too painful, give a set as a gift to a friend. Ready to pull with bits inside and then she can keep the crackers for next year!

That’s a great present idea. Thanks for the encouragement everybody- I’ll give it one more go!

The matchbox is beautiful @RainbowZebraWarrior

Sounds like the perfect day out @PinballWizened

Poncing has taken a back seat to sorting out my parents, DF has had to go into a care home and as many of you will probably know there is a lot to be done. This was sudden following a serious fall in the summer rather than a gradual anticipated move through care at home and it has sideswiped me (and Mum). I am trying to keep up some craft type things for mindfulness reasons but nothing that would really categorise as poncetastic. But here are the lego flowers I finished last week

I'm dragging 16yo DD out for a walk this morning (she has an insane amount of homework to do over the holiday and hasn't really had a break now since we broke up on the 17th). I'm hoping it'll do us both good, mentally and physically. I'm also going to take photos of what's growing in the hedgerows so I can identify them to see what's edible and what I can use as decorations. It might also help DD get some inspiration for her art homework (she's in STDAA which is the baccalaureat with an art option on top of all the other lessons, it's very full on but she's enjoying it). I've suggested she saves all her rough drawings and colour tests as she could cut them out/up to make bookmarks as Christmas presents (I will laminate them.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/10/2025 08:52

Sending warm hugs your way @ExquisitelyDecorating as that sounds really tough. Flowers

We also have that lego bouquet. It lives atop the microwave and, thanks to DD, seems to keep acquiring additional elements! I have only just realised after taking this photo that it is occupying a killer jar that I've been hunting for!

I was considering the Wonder Cracker pattern but I decided on this one instead.
It’s free and looks easy to do. I like to see someone else make it first and I can’t see any YouTube videos of the wonder cracker being made. If anyone has seen any videos I might reconsider because they look great

DanceWithYourBalloon · 26/10/2025 09:01

I’ll try that link again

CrushingOnRubies · 26/10/2025 09:13

I love the Lego flower range, have the daffodils, roses and the poinsettia.

FurForksSake · 26/10/2025 09:41

I offer up a poncey mushroom purchased for me by one of my offspring for my birthday. I am wondering if it is an autumn and winter decoration and not just for Christmas…

@PinballWizened what a brilliant poncetastic day.

After the village, the squash, the market, the leaves and the bobble hat you top it all off with

"Took the scenic route home then knitted a wooly jumper wine bottle cover."

Joyous. Thank you.
