Poncetastic Christmas 2025

OK, first of all, I know it's still September but we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you.The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to brown, that can only mean one thing- it's time to ignore the waves of Halloween decor all over your local The Range and head to the woods to start picking your own holly for that perfect Kirsty inspired wreath.

We want homemade stuffing recipes perfected by November, the handmade crackers draped in the most delicate of embroidered ribbon, mantle pieces draped in the most Scandinavian of wooden carvings, specialised stamps for the personalised wrapping paper ordered by next week and the word craft to be your official middle name by new year.

Happy ponceing and may Nigel and Nigella's fairy lights guide you on your way to getting the last box of rosemary and sea salt crackers in your own personal Bethlehem.

They are really lovely!

Oooo they’re pretty!

Trumpton · 18/10/2025 19:04

Chilli jam made. Very nice and not too hot.

Just catching up…

@Tombobombowhat pattern are you using for your crackers?

@FurForksSakeEvery Christmas here in France I buy a dome of President butter with the salt crystals in. I slather it over everything. 😂

In general I haven’t got round to anymore poncing since my marmalade. School stuff, my son’s horse riding, social stuff, and everyone being sick seems to have taken up all the time. That’s not even factoring in work. Hopefully start of term madness will calm down now.

We have a glut of green tomatoes so I may attempt some green tomato jam.

I did manage to buy some cute wooden Christmas tree cocktail sticks the other day and some festive Spider-Man window stickers for my boys’ bedroom and some Mini Mouse ones for my daughter.

I bought a pattern off Etsy (recommended on this thread). The wonder cracker sewing pattern . Still not started though!!

I’ve finished a couple of cross stitch kits I bought last year. Got the bug now and DH has thoughtfully chosen been dragged round hobbycraft and given to wrap a big advanced kit for my Christmas present .

Beautiful work! I also got those exact same two kits from Hobbycraft last year.

I took the massive log up north and my dad sliced it into discs with his chainsaw but sadly the moisture content read 53% so the homemade cheeseboards will be next years Christmas presents. The wood grain is beautiful though so if anyone sees any London plan trees being chopped down make sure you grab a chunk.
Loving all your craft ideas.

PinballWizened · 20/10/2025 13:39

@RainbowZebraWarrior great minds! Are you still full tilt with your candle making? I find it difficult to balance crafting for pleasure and business. I used to sew for a living and it’s taken about 10 years before I can enjoy it again!

Yes. The candle fatigue is starting to set in now. I'm making loads of gorgeous gingerbread house ones for a craft market on 1st November. I was thinking of doing another market in early December, but I'll see what I've got left after this one. I love the atmosphere of a Christmas craft market, but not the madness that is prepping for one (never mind the weather!) Thankfully our 1st Nov one is indoors. I absolutely loved making the gingerbread houses when we first bought the mould, but the novelty is definitely wearing off now. I'm also aware I have other half finished projects to get back to. Maybe when DD breaks up for half term this Friday we will find the time to have some actual craft enjoyment!

FurForksSake · 20/10/2025 16:31

I saw someone on TikTok making gingerbread house candles, they look gorgeous!

Next year I’m hoping I’ll have made some ceramics that I might actually be able to sell at Christmas markets.

PinballWizened · 20/10/2025 18:06

The gingerbread houses sound lovely!
I love a craft market too. Ideally not too busy so you can get round properly and buy/browse.

Derailing the thread

Have just purchased french cleaning products for my new kitchen. In order not to drip feed - I dont live in France, I grew up in Milton Keynes. I feel this back story adds an extra level of poncetasticness.

Currently Guord deep in autumn but did purchase chai latte sticking fillers today.

Waves at the oldies who were poncing when it was just fields here.

FurForksSake · 20/10/2025 18:53

Did you buy French cleaning products in Milton Keynes?

From un website au angleterre. They were ridiculously overpriced, I'm stupidly excited but will not recommend until they have seen action.

FurForksSake · 20/10/2025 19:42

I bought French soap flash, not sure it’s quite the same 😆

PinballWizened · 20/10/2025 19:49

@Poncetestical there are beaucoup de choses I’d love to have French in my kitchen (including a stylishly mismatched not-fitted kitchen) but can’t recall the cleaning products with any special fondness. Chestnut season though, and wild mushrooms in the supermarkets, phwoarrrr

CrushingOnRubies · 12/10/2025 14:12

Not the ponciest of places to get wrapping paper, but Next has a really nice selection. However, does anyone know if their paper has grid lines?

Yes I got some and it did. I got the 3 pack of rolls. So beautiful.

AlicePottery · 20/10/2025 22:00

What are these luxurious French cleaning products (I do live in France and I use the Pink Stuff 😂)?

DanceWithYourBalloon · 21/10/2025 08:44

@AlicePottery I live in France too and end up in Action for their cleaning bits, including Pink Stuff 😂
Every single Christmas I miss British shops and products. But it does mean I’ve resorted to making much more from scratch.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 21/10/2025 08:47

My husband was coming back to France via Stansted airport yesterday and I asked him to pick me up a Christmas magazine but he said they were all £8 upwards. So I told him not to bother, I’m sure the one I bought at the airport last year was only £5.99!
The Readly app is only £9.99 so I’ll go for that instead I suppose

All the Christmas magazines (and newspapers) I like to read are available via my local library on app called BorrowBox. Check the website of your local library for details, some may use a different app but all libraries offer the service.

AlicePottery · 21/10/2025 08:54

I get my Pink stuff from Normale, but I have an Action way closer so that's good to know!
I am forced to ponce here too (Xmas puddings & mince pies being the two main ones), DH even tried making his own Marmite once, it was not a success.
Seeing as it's half term here I now have more time to ponce, yesterday I spent the afternoon doing pottery, I made some flower frogs and threw some mugs to sell for our pottery association in December. I'm going to trim the mugs this afternoon so I'll take some photos to share on here (I have last year's things on Instagram, can't remember what my exact handle is but if you search AlicePottry it should come up (my profile pic is a pot on fire 😅), I've got a couple of posts of the felt Xmas decorations I made last year too (you'll have to scroll down as I may have posted a lot about the pottery markets I went to this summer and all the cups I bought 😅😅).

CrushingOnRubies · 21/10/2025 10:50

My boss accidentally ordered 12 pots of pink stuff. And well a tub lasts ages. So she gave me a pot for free

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/10/2025 10:57

My top tip with Pink Stuff paste is neither Christmassy or Poncetastic but is brilliant. Pink stuff paste + scrunched up tin foil works amazingly on stains on the underside of the toilet seat. I first saw it mentioned on a FB cleaning page that randomly popped up in my feed and as I was at the point of buying new toilet seats I gave it a go. It's faded the fake tan arse print on one seat and completely removed the more organic stains on the other.

FurForksSake · 21/10/2025 11:03

Organic 😆😆

RainbowZebraWarrior · 21/10/2025 11:28

Ooh @AlicePottery I've given you a follow on Insta (I'm BeeKinderProducts I think) Your stuff is 😍 Pottery is something I really want to do. I'd love to see pics of your latest creations. I've not posted in ages on Instagram so my account is years out of date, but DD has asked to take over it so I may set her to it when we break up for half term on Friday.

Interesting hack @TheWoollybacksWife

I know nowt about posh cleaning products as they all make me ill (allergic asthma) so I mostly make my own. Half of MN will probably be aghast at my lack of daily bleaching, but it's amazing how well natural products work.
