It looks as though my DDs newish BF will be with us for Christmas this year and I've realised that I have no idea what to get for him! He's the same age as DS who will also be here, so I don't want to duplicate gifts, I don't want anything to feel 'generic' but I don't know what to get him! Obviously I'm going to ask DD for some ideas, but I thought I'd put it up here to try to gain some ideas for a 31 year old bloke who's not sporty, works as a mechanic - and that's about it.

General, but not generic, if you know what I mean. I've got him some toiletries so far and that's all.

Voucher for a nice restaurant he can take your daughter to.

AudiobookListener · 09/09/2025 11:07

He's a grown man coming to your house as a guest at Xmas! He doesn't get a present he brings one for his hosts! Toiletries so that he has something to open while everyone else is opening their's is enough.

Pancakeflipper · 09/09/2025 11:08

Cinema voucher?
Theatre voucher?
And a nice bar of chocolate or bottle of something?

Or there is some hand wash/hand care products that are for those who get oily hands. Can't recall the name.... Will think....

Coffeeishot · 09/09/2025 11:10

Id go for toiletries and sweets if he is really new.

Coffeeishot · 09/09/2025 11:12

Thing is that he is her sister's long time very good friend, so he's not a total stranger. Just to me! I'm also going to ask her sister - who won't be here at Christmas, for some ideas.

That's not how Christmas works in this house though.

Or maybe a just eat voucher ?

deirdrerasheed · 09/09/2025 11:15

Nice hand creme, his hands will need it in that job. Don't over think it.

Fair, so he has been around and not a total stranger, could you get your daughter and him a small joint gift ? Like cinema or reasturant,

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/09/2025 11:20

Thanks everyone, some great ideas on here!

I love Christmas and really pull out the stops and try to find things for people that are surprising but that they will love, so the other attendees for Christmas day will have some gorgeous things to open and I want to make sure that this chap doesn't feel left out or 'second best' in any way. Which is why I'm using you lot to get some ideas.

Ha! I gave you an out if you wanted one! What about a board game? A voucher for a day at the races (horses/motorbikes/cars). Single malt.

Ooh, single malt is a good idea - I'll find out from DD what he likes to drink and buy him a really nice bottle of it!

You can't go wrong with a bottle of something really.

Agree with cinema / restaurant voucher as a joint gift with your DD.

Do you have an Everyman Cinema near you? They are nicer than your average cinema so more of a treat than a VUE / Odeon.

Or alternatively some gifts I have suggested to others in the past when they have wanted ideas for DH:

Leather wash bag
Leather belt (brown or black)
Bottle of nice single malt whisky / any other spirit he might like
A vinyl (if he's into music and has a turntable obviously)
A subscription for something like ground coffee / cheese / wine

I bought DH a Calzone Kitchen subscription which he loved

I'd get a voucher for something for them to do together and if you want something to wrap just for him, generic drink or sweets.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 09/09/2025 11:30

Perhaps you are not doing stockings/table or tree presents, but i buy my mechanic son vintage car badges, car cleaning cloths & cleaners ( he likes autoglym), keyrings, but he has too many now!, magnet trays for collecting metal bits that always drop. Mine works at home on mine and his project cars, so these are not professional work gifts.

I second this. There's a lovely steak restaurant near us so that's what I got DD's partner the first year!

Paisley19 · 09/09/2025 11:47

A personalised pint glass?

Anotheronelikeit · 09/09/2025 11:58

Red letter days and Groupon do some great days out for not that much.
There's ones you can buy that doesn't specify a particular activity so the receiver can choose, in lots of different locations.
Then he has the choice of something he may do with your DD, or with his friends or even on his own. It's a broad gift with no expectations he has to share it with your DD and doesn't end up not being used/wanted.

Check he drinks before you buy alcohol though

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/09/2025 12:01

I’d go with a bottle of whatever he drinks and a mug or key ring that’s silly. If you need a bit more gloves or a scarf are good presents from me girlfriends mum.

Shinysunday · 09/09/2025 15:43

Get a joint present that he and DD will like, Boucher for a restaurant or gig tickets or similar.

Peclet · 09/09/2025 15:52

north face beanie hat
herschel supply wash bag or hold all for weekends away
Nike dry fit socks
Silly Christmas jumper
Card game
head torch
pen knife
novelty bottle opener
good quality travel mug. yeti brand is great
are you?local
barrista coffee grounds

OMGitsnotgood · 09/09/2025 16:02

It’s been said but adding my vote: if he drinks, a bottle of his favourite tipple.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/09/2025 17:39

Lots of these are great! I should have said that he lives a few hundred miles away, on a Navy base and comes to visit DD at weekends, so it makes things a wee bit harder.
