Cut off age for present giving?

Do you have a cut off age for buying for the “kids” in your family.
For example dhs niece and nephews we always buy birthday and Christmas gifts for.
They are almost 30 and work full time and he still buys for them at Christmas and gives them a birthday gift.
Now they’re starting to have their own families he thinks we should still buy for the nieces and nephews but also their babies now more so to keep his sister and brother happy.
We also have a family friend who has two children, we buy for both only at Christmas though but her oldest is gone 18 and I feel that we should only buy for the younger child now.
Am I being a Scrooge here?

We gave a last decent sized cash present to each nephew the Christmas after they turned 18. If they ever produce a child we'll start again with them.

When they reach 18 we stop birthday and Christmas presents.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 03/09/2025 13:18

We have older nieces and nephews (mostly still at home though not in their 30s with own families) We do a small family gift for everyone in the household for those. We don't do individual gifts. Something like a game or some chocolates.

LifeBeginsToday · 03/09/2025 13:39

We buy individual presents until 18 and then they join the family Secret Santa.

BarnacleBeasley · 03/09/2025 13:41

I think it depends on the relationship you have with them. We're in our 40s and DP has some aunts and uncles who still send her a Christmas present (she sends them one too though). My aunt and uncle didn't when they were still alive because we didn't really have that kind of relationship.

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/09/2025 13:44

we have 3 nephews and nieces between us, all in their 30's with DC and we still buy for them and their children

Plinketyplonks · 03/09/2025 13:48

When they get to 18 we stop birthday presents but still do Xmas presents but with a £15 limit for my side of the family. DH’s family are loaded so £15 wouldn’t cut it and actually it’s all a bit silly as one of his nephews earns £££££ so can easily buy whatever he wants.

I stopped at 18 for family members. I also stopped buying for friends kids when they were around early teens. My kids have bought gifts for their own friends since a similar age. Far too much angst over present giving for everyone and their dog these days.

18; then a token present if i actually see them over Christmas.

Toomanywaterbottles · 03/09/2025 15:34

We have never bought for nieces or nephews, even as children. We just do a secret Santa - we pull names out of a hat and buy only for that person.

Hayley1256 · 03/09/2025 15:36

I still but for my older Niece and nephew ( the 2 that I see regularly), since working they also buy for me and my DD

Ineedpeaceandquiet · 03/09/2025 15:37

A single gift for the whole family eg hamper seems fair and reasonable.

Denim4ever · 03/09/2025 15:39

18th birthday as the last present seems popular. We had a few people who stopped at 16 and one who wrote on the eve our DSs 16th to say 15 was the last one. We laughed about that as 15 seems a pointless cut off.

My best friend still buys DS chocs at Christmas (grown up ones) and he buys her dog a small gift. It's sweet.

dogcatkitten · 03/09/2025 15:40

As a later mum I gave up buying presents for loads of nephews and nieces (that I had bought birthday and Christmas presents for, for years years) when I realised none of their parents bought anything for mine, I guess they had grown out of the whole giving the family children presents before mine came along, so I took it as a hint!

Yes, we've done this for family. DH has a child free sis who doesn't drink but loves a deli basket

pilates · 03/09/2025 15:46

I don’t buy for adult niece and nephew but I do for their children

AnneButNotHathaway · 04/09/2025 10:44

We don't buy for nieces and nephews and send out smartshow 3d video cards to in-laws families instead. Everyone in the immediate family gets a present.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 04/09/2025 12:27

We have 13 nieces and nephews on mine and my husband's sides so it stopped at 21 years old, they're now earning more than us mostly!

EchoedSilence · 04/09/2025 12:29

I haven't stopped. They don't stop being my nieces and nephews at 18.

Sarah2891 · 04/09/2025 12:38

I'm not going to stop giving my nephew presents.

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2025 13:03

My FIL informed 18 is his cut off.
I dint buy presents for those outside the family. Not any friends kids for sure. I buy fur my step grandkids rather than my stepsons, but I did buy them something until they had kids (my DH is dead so part of it is because I think he would give them presents - they don’t give presents to their half siblings). I gave my sisters and my niece presents. That’s it. But I think 18 or 21 is a good cut off for those outside or extended family.

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 04/09/2025 13:07

A big present ("golden handshake"!) at 18, then no more presents.

Coconutter24 · 04/09/2025 13:32

Just reading through these comments and 18 seems to be the standard, I thought yeh that sounds ok. I then thought about my own niece who just turned 18. I gave her £60 for her birthday (tbh I normally only do £20 for family kids but she needs stuff for uni so gave bit extra), I then thought I can’t imagine not giving her anything next year for her 19th. She’s a uni student with a part time job and will now more than ever in her life appreciate the birthday money. So I’m going to say 21 is the ‘cut off’. I wouldn’t buy for adult nieces and nephews 30+ unless money was no problem, I’d probably buy for their kids if I still wanted to buy something

Starlight1984 · 04/09/2025 13:42

Well my aunties and uncles still buy me presents now and I'm 40 😬

drspouse · 04/09/2025 22:20

I'd say end of student days (two DNs, both now at uni but last year one was taking a year out).
