What to do with all the unwanted food gifts?

We have been given tons of gifts from work customers and friends/family that we just won't eat or drink. Things like liquer filled chocolates, tin of Roses, biscuits etc. What does everyone do with bit like this? Food bank?

Food bank

IMustDoMoreExercise · 27/12/2024 21:59

Food bsnk

Changingplace · 27/12/2024 21:59

Yes I’m sure the food bank would take most things, I’m not sure they’ll take the liquor chocolates but I’m sure they’d gladly take everything else.

TwentyTwentyFive · 27/12/2024 21:59

I took some today to put in the food bank trolley at the supermarket. It had quite a few other similar donations in it too so it seems others had the same good idea.

Bustopnumberone · 27/12/2024 22:00

Olio app.

fuzzychic · 27/12/2024 22:00

Do you really think foodbanks want a load of chocolates? Won't they have given a load out before Christmas?

CornishPorsche · 27/12/2024 22:00

Food bank.

Or send my dad the liqueur chocolates, he's always complaining he can't find them these days!

Is it a good idea?

No teens in your house then? 🤣. Mine would not be happy donating that kind of stuff but yes, food bank would love it.

creamsnugjumper · 27/12/2024 22:02

I'm off to Sainsbury's tomorrow to drop similar items in to the food bank trolly, just biscuits, chocolates, Pringles and hot chocolate, all gifted but we won't need it.

soupfiend · 27/12/2024 22:02

Eat them throughout the year, they dont go off.

Make brownies with them or melt them down for other recipes

Wibblywobblybobbly · 27/12/2024 22:02

Our local Facebook Freebay site or Olio. I think a lot of the people who collect the stuff are foodbank users, but it saves inundating the foodbank with chocolate.

Oioisavaloy27 · 27/12/2024 22:02

Foodbank, woman's refuge?

Why would it not be a good idea. Confused

Absolutely. The food banks can give nice extras like a box of chocolates in addition to the basic food for people. Just because you're skint doesn't mean you don't fancy some chocolate.

@fuzzychic Ah yes, food bank users don't like sweet treats etc, it's just tinned goods, wonky veg and loaves they want eh? Of course it's a good idea.

Because their warehouse might already be full of chocolates from before Christmas?

UnstableEquilibrium · 27/12/2024 22:08

They're good for tombola gifts at school fairs etc but there's not many of those kind of events between January and Easter.

fuzzychic · 27/12/2024 22:09

That's not what I'm saying. I didn't know if the foodbanks would already be full of that sort of item

I think you underestimate just how many people are currently using food banks. Even if they had mountains of such boxes and chocolates pre Christmas there will sadly still be plenty of people who are very grateful for such treats to bring a bit more joy post Christmas.

Thanks that's the sort of info I was short on. I didn't know if they'd be sufficiently stocked and prefer another item. My local one always wants deodorant and conditioner for example.

Are people who use food banks not allowed treats at other times of the year?

These aren't people who are buying something especially to donate to a food bank.

They are people who otherwise wouldn't donate who happen to have some spare chocolate.

They wouldn't be going out to buy another item like conditioner or deodorant.

The question is whether or not to donate unwanted chocolate - and of course you can! (unless it contains alcohol because they can't distribute that).
