Sleeping on the Floor

Have to travel 200 miles to visit in laws for xmas tomorrow. We are finally debt free and have a dog so can't stay in a hotel as we cant afford the expensive dog friendly one near her. MIL has a 3 bed house with two double beds, a single bed and a sofa. We asked if it was ok if we stay. The in laws and my teenage children can have the double beds, I sleep on the single bed, dp has sofa. She has point blank refused and said one of us needs to sleep on the floor as she needs the entire double bed to herself as her back hurts so my fil has to sleep on the sofa. Is she being difficult on purpose? I've always had a strained relationship with her and it seems like she's being deliberately awkward.

If you are a person who suffers with back pain then giving up your usual bed could cause agony leading to sleeplessness and exhaustion. I’m with MIL on this.
However, I’d have bought an inflatable mattress so that guests didn’t have to sleep on the floor or, if I couldn’t afford it, I’d ask you to bring your sofa cushions/air bed/camping bed or whatever. There are solutions so it doesn’t have to be the hard floor.

I agree with you but we haven't asked her to give up her double bed, just share it with her dp? I don't have back pain but does she need the entire double bed?

It sounds like she doesn't really want you all there ? Or maybe something else

Are either her or your FIL very big? Thinking possibly they have a mattress that sags badly in the middle..

I suffer with back pain, and it's only the last 6 years have I been able to share a bed, the 10 years before that I was on the sofa whilst dp had the bed (found it easier with something behind me), so I'm afraid I'm with your MIL on this one. Back pain sucks.

BCBird · 25/12/2024 06:13

If her and DP are not used to sharing then that is probably the issue as neither of them would get any sleep. Teens rough it on floor, not u and ur husband. Don't go nxt year

I think you've hit the nail on the head. She is a larger lady so you are probably right about the mattress thing. Saying that, even before her bad back she always preferred it if we stayed somewhere else.

I'm with your MIL. I would not take.it personally.

Petula1977 · 25/12/2024 06:16

Thanks for your responses. I won't take it personally and will take a sleeping bag. It's only one night. We will cope for xmas.

Leave the teens with the dog at mom’s, then you and dp get a cheap hotel?

And they may not share a bed for a bum if private reasons.

SnoopysHoose · 25/12/2024 10:56

Get a blow up and let the teens use that and single bed, drama about nothing.

BellissimoGecko · 25/12/2024 20:04

Why are you only sorting this out the day before Christmas?!

MumChp · 25/12/2024 20:06

Next time bring an inflatable mattress. Teens are fine on them.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/12/2024 20:09

Bring your own inflatable mattress (and make a dc sleep on it!)

HoundsOfHelfire · 25/12/2024 20:22

Mil has double, FIL has single, you and DH have double, kids on the floor

HoundsOfHelfire · 25/12/2024 20:24

It’s normal for the kids to rough it on the floor, just give them roll mats or whatever

PullTheBricksDown · 25/12/2024 20:38

Travelodge take dogs. I'd book the nearest one as even if it's not down the road, it'll be a lot nearer than a 200 mile drive.

Or I'd look for a supermarket or Argos open tomorrow where you can buy an inflatable mattress.

Jabbabong · 25/12/2024 20:41

She has every right to sleep in her own double bed alone even more so if she has back pain. You asked to stay which she has agreed. Telling her the sleeping arrangement that you require is taking the piss.

Sleep on the floor.

😳 Who wants to think about their PILS sharing a bed for a bum? 😂

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/12/2024 20:49

Doesn't sound slime she wants you to stay tbh. Can you not just forgot Argos tomorrow morning and get a blow up or SIM?

Sproutssproutssprouts · 25/12/2024 20:51

Do you have to go and stay? It doesn’t sound like you’ll be welcomed or very comfortable.

fuuwan · 25/12/2024 21:08

Why can't the teens sleep on the single bed and the floor rather than sharing a bed?

Sleep on the floor.

This. And it was rude to invite yourselves to stay

Bizarred · 25/12/2024 21:12

FIL probably snores like a drain/train and possibly they actually have separate rooms so they are compromising by putting him on the sofa to enable you to have his room.

Yes, one of you should sleep on the floor - take an airbed.

Sproutssproutssprouts · 25/12/2024 21:17

I am confused though why does FIL sleep on the sofa and not in the single or double bed?
