How many meats

just a general chat, it’s not a competition, I was just finishing my plans and checking shopping lists and started to wonder.

i do a ham which we have Christmas Eve with jackets and salad then cold for further days.

Christmas Day I do a turkey no other meat unless you count sausages with bacon.

between Christmas and new year, the 29th this year because that’s when my son can come, I shall do lamb.

new year day will be beef

i personally think that’s plenty, especially when you consider I have to do a vegetarian option each time too.

if noticed it’s become more and more common todo two meats on Christmas Day, how many of you actually do this ?

also potatoes, I do roast, that’s it, not mash, no new potatoes just roast, I think with roast parsnips/celeriac/onions then the stuffing Yorkshire puddings steamed carrots/ broccoli / sprouts etc a second choice of potatoes is to much. But that could be just the way I was brought up .

We always have ham, turkey, chicken (my wife doesn’t eat turkey), pork and pigs in blankets.

Apart from the ham (we buy a half leg) we buy smaller pieces of meat so everyone gets their favourite and then use the leftovers for cold cuts on Boxing Day.

We’ll have toast potatoes, broccoli/ cauliflower cheese, honey roasted veg and stuffing on Christmas Day then a big buffet with the extended family on Boxing Day.

I grew up with two different meats on Christmas Day and a buffet on Boxing Day so I suppose I’m sort of carrying on the tradition and we now live in Australia and it’s almost written into the constitution to have a ham at Christmas.

Gammon and beef for us this year.

MadeForThis · 23/12/2024 00:02

Turkey and gammon. Roasties and mash.
Beef for new year.

MumChp · 23/12/2024 00:03

Pork and duck for us. Scandinavian Christmas.
Beef for New Year.

terracottacountryfarm · 23/12/2024 00:07

Pork, turkey and gammon

HeddaGarbled · 23/12/2024 00:08

Yeah, I’m with you OP. Turkey only for Christmas dinner and also roast potatoes only. Ham for Boxing Day buffet with leftover turkey. Beef for New Year. In between, I’ll be using up leftovers and doing normal meals like spag Bol or chilli or pizza.

Skethylita · 23/12/2024 11:24

Well, my bird is stuffed with a mix of giblets and minced meat, among other things, then we also have pigs in blankets, so that makes it 5 types, I believe. I also have salmon and eggs in the morning.

It's a lot for one day - good thing that it usually means lots of leftovers for other days, too. The bird will have enough meat for two days, the stuffing will go into a gratin-type dish another day and the remaining sausages and bacon will enhance a random leftovers dish. That takes us to the 28th, then I'll be back to whatever food, but we eat meat almost daily. New Years' Eve is traditionally fish in my household.

Christmas Eve we have a takeaway

Christmas day just Beef

Boxing Day we will have left over beef in sandwiches for lunch then we go to in laws in the evening for Gammon and they do sides like cheesy vegetable bake with that

New Year's Day we've never had a thought out fancy dinner! We go out on New Year's Eve usually so would have something quick and easy or a takeaway..I'm pregnant this year, still going to the pub with family to celebrate but obviously no alcohol so I may do a Pork roast if everyone else fancies that

How many do you cook for? There's 4 of us this year and a large beef is more than enough and all of our favourite meat luckily. Saying that I'm still lazing around after a long weekend at work and need to get to Tesco for the beef or we'll be having a veggie roast! Everything sold out last year🫣

ohholynightt · 23/12/2024 14:12

Turkey and gammon for us
Turkey for Christmas and we normally keep the gammon for NYD
Have sandwich meats but that's it

BarbaraHoward · 23/12/2024 14:34

We always have turkey, ham and sausage meat stuffing on Christmas Day but that's the tradition in Ireland. There seems to be more variation in the UK (based on here anyway).

Leftovers of same on boxing day/Stephenseseses day. New years will be just us so may well be something instant as we'll be all celebrated out.

Minihero · 23/12/2024 14:41

DH does Christmas Eve ham (we have it with egg and chips), and then I do turkey with pigs and blankets and pork stuffing on Christmas Day. No other meats. We will have roast beef in between and going to my mums for a roast on New Year's Day.

Inextremis · 23/12/2024 14:54

Massive thanks, OP - I've been sitting here all day wondering what the heck I've forgotten - and you reminded me - had to take the ham out of the freezer! Phew :)

Anyway, to answer your question, we'll be having chicken on Christmas Day (there's only DH and me), together with the aforementioned ham - which I'll be cooking tomorrow. Also pigs in blankets, if you count them as 'a meat'.

We've got some lovely fillet steaks for New Year, and a duck for some time in between.

sprigatito · 23/12/2024 14:56

Turkey and venison for Christmas dinner this year. Pork on Boxing Day, then we have lamb, roast beef and gammon for subsequent dinners over the festive period. We alternate roast dinners with buffets until NYE.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/12/2024 14:59

I always do three meats, this year it's pork, lamb and beef.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/12/2024 15:06

We only have one meat for the main. With sausage meat stuffing, pigs in blankets etc!

BobbyBiscuits · 23/12/2024 15:09

We have a ham that we start eating a couple days before Xmas, then a turkey crown and more of the ham on Xmas day.
Apart from that don't do any other meat.
But we are a small family.
We don't entertain or cook a big meal for NYE. Too bloody knackered, lol. 🤣

mathanxiety · 23/12/2024 16:22

One meat here.

I can't believe anyone does more. How big are your fridges?

Raera · 23/12/2024 16:30

Turkey crown, pork and pigs here (for 12)

SJM1988 · 23/12/2024 16:40

This year we have a 3 bird roast, turkey and gammon. Most years its 3 bird roast and gammon

Edit to add - pigs in blankets too

mrsm43s · 23/12/2024 18:23

We always want ham and turkey for cold cuts, so that's the minimum. If we're having something other than turkey on Christmas day, then it'll be 3 meats as we'd cook that in addition to the turkey and ham.

This year, it's just turkey and gammon. We'll cook the ham on Christmas Eve, and the Turkey on Christmas Day.

Obviously we also serve all the normal meat based sides. And we're having duck for NYE.

Copperoliverbear · 24/12/2024 00:59

We have two meats on Christmas Day, we have Turkey and Gammon.
With all the trimmings.

User12385359 · 24/12/2024 09:50

Turkey and gammon, with sausage meat stuffing and pigs in blankets.
Roast potatoes and dauphinois here.

Dinosaurdrip · 24/12/2024 10:39

We will be having chicken (no one likes turkey) gammon, duck and beef for Xmas day and then left overs and buffet for boxing day.
We have mashed and roast pots and sweede and carrot mash, sprouts, parsnips, pigs in blankets, stuffing and carrots.
We normally have take away on nye and then nyd we are having a 3 bird roast and goose.

AEP123 · 24/12/2024 10:41

Usually two if there up to 6 of us, anything over 6 people we have Turkey, Beef, Ham and Lamb which is what’s happening this year. Woo!

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/12/2024 10:45

It seems really odd to me to have more than one meat.

Mind you we aren't having any meat, just smoked salmon!
