Christmas breakfast

So we have normally gone to my partners parents for Christmas Day breakfast but this year we are going later in the day so need ideas to do at home. My family always just had our usual toast/cereal but DP family always do something special and that seems a nice idea but I can't think what to do.
Needs to be easy to make (even if it's make ahead) and have a dairy free option for DD (2.5). Not too heavy and not meat based really as we have so much of that later.
Any ideas? What do you have?

I buy those frozen unbaked pastries - croissants, pain au chocolat, that sort of thing, and then put them in the oven first thing Christmas morning. Those and a pot of fresh coffee make the whole house smell delicious! Add in plenty of fresh fruit and you've got a nice light breakfast (unless you eat as many croissants as I do...) that sets you up for the day.

That would be great but pretty sure we won't find dairy free versions

Well, maybe your daughter could have fresh fruit and dairy free yoghurt and you can have the pastries? Two year olds tend not to be much for the pastries anyway, they'd rather have pancakes and I'm sure you can make dairy free pancakes to serve with some fruit.

Smoked salmon, sliced avocado & scrambled eggs with spinach

There is a vegan version by Pret available in Tesco's

I don't know if they are suitable for dairy allergies but Asda do vegan croissants and they taste lovely heated up! They're in the pre packaged section of the bread isle.

We have pork pie and pickle. Pretty sure the pastry is dairy free. Might not be what the little one wants.

Cuwins · 11/12/2024 17:58

@ThatDreamSheep ohhh is there. She has had croissants a couple of times and loved them so I can't eat them in front of her if she can't have them. Will see if they have them in my Tesco. Thanks

She would possibly eat that actually but I can't stand pork pies and I don't like pickles!
Does that come from a particular place or something as seems an unusual one?

The "traditional" Christmas Day breakfast is smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (which is pretty easy) but it depends if your IL's will be doing smoked salmon as a starter. Otherwise, kedgeree is delicious, a bit different - and dairy free. Or, if you've got the time, you could do a family breakfast station with slices of smoked salmon, avocado, fresh fruit, yoghurt (vegan for your DD) and hard boiled eggs or a large omelette. Depending on her age, your DD could help assemble it. Does her dairy free include eggs though?

Oh fab. I knew their ready made puff pastry was but didn't realise the pastries were. Thanks

They don't do a starter so that's an option. Not sure how I feel about smoked salmon first thing- I think the pastry ideas would sit better with me.
No eggs aren't dairy so that's fine.

My favourite is toasted sourdough bread (really thick slice) topped with wilted spinach, sliced smoked salmon and a dollop of cream cheese, I use olive oil to wilt the spinach (rather than butter) if my vegan brother is around, skip the salmon for him and fry portobello mushrooms instead and vegan cream cheese.

It’s from either the north east or the West Midlands. I grew up eating it as a young child. Im
not so keen on it now but my partner (from the north west) loves it!

There are threads on MN about Christmas birthdays so there should be plenty of ideas to choose from.

We make homemade Dishoom bacon naan with chilli jam, you could do this with egg instead of bacon, like a masala omelette wrapped in a naan/roti with chilli jam?

Really nice bread seems like a good idea

The Just rol brand ready to bake croissants and cinnamon swirls are dairy free. They have a "may contain milk" warning as lots of stuff does so depends how you feel about that.

SereneCapybara · 11/12/2024 18:09

Bagels with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or cream cheese for dairy eaters. Bucks fizz for adults, Mock bucks fizz for DC with freshly squeezed OJ and sparkling water..

We also sometimes do those bake your own french pastries or cinnamon rolls. I think they are dairy free. The pastry is made with oil.

DD would really enjoy that as she loves a bit of spice but I don't think my stomach would cope with spice first thing

Oh also Sainsburys vegan croissants too, they also do ready made vegan American style pancakes in the fresh section.

That was always our Christmas Day breakfast as well, when I was growing up! I've no idea where it comes from and I don't know anyone else who had/has it.

I grew up in Derby, if that's significant

KittenPause · 11/12/2024 18:14

The obvious choice is smoked salmon on toast or blinis
