The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles Readalong 2024 Part 3

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/12/2024 15:14

Welcome to thread three.

The Christmas Chronicles is the story of Nigel Slater’s love for winter. Taking you from 1 November all the way to early February, The Christmas Chronicles covers everything from Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year to Epiphany. Throughout the season, Nigel offers over 100 recipes to see you through the build-up, the celebrations and the aftermath.

Anyone who hasn't yet joined in, there's still a big chunk of the book to go as you can see from the description above. It's in diary form with an entry most days and is easy to dip in and out of.

Anyway, welcome friends new and old. Pull a cosy chair closer the the fire, light a candle, pour a glass of something warming and settle in.

Happy Birthday @AgathaMystery

A lovely cheerful bloom @LillianGish

I saw one or two snow drops today on my walk. Won't be long til we have carpets of them in the woods-and then I feel like we are beginning to be over the worst of it .

Confusedmeanderings · 07/01/2025 16:10

Another Monoprix lover here, although it's been a long time since I shopped in one!

Bimblesalong · 07/01/2025 16:45

Happy birthday @AgathaMystery

A very calming entry from Nigel, which has me pondering a parody if he did indeed have teenagers in his home.

@EphemeraleEudemonia I must admit, I make almost a ceremony of reading your lovely posts. Today has included a cream tea scone as I gradually use up some of the indulgences of Christmas.

Huge success on the fruit and veg stall at the hospital today. Satsumas! @SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense 🍊🍊🍊

All snuggled in, fire ready to light and surfaces becoming clearer.

Bah. None in Waitrose; I tried

lucysmam · 07/01/2025 17:28

Happy birthday @AgathaMystery 🎉

I'm just passing through for now, will read properly once I sit down this evening.

EphemeraleEudemonia · 07/01/2025 17:36

Have finally caught up the thread and CC again.
@HannahDefoesChristmasHamper Self care - definitely. It's so easily overlooked. It's not my word but is an attempted resolution. (the bar is quite low!)

@dazzlingdeborahrose Thank you for Farm Kitchen. Will be watching that on iplayer when I can find the opportunity, and @RainbowZebraWarrior for Antarctic podcast, and of course all the work that goes into keeping this special thread. Sympathies with having to pace yourself so much. (similar situation here, but more boom and bust.)
@LillianGish Oh wow to the Galette! Interesting to hear of the disagreement about Epiphany. Our Magi (or whatever representing them) traditionally make it to the base of the tree at midnight on the 5th. On the 6th we cut our (heavy) Epiphany cake, and find and crowned our king of celebrations. But at around 1 to 2am we have another cake which is very light, sweet, and decorated with either a star or a baby Jesus on a bed of saffron, and the magi may be in attendance, even though we're handed down the story that only the shepherds were there. (the three kings allegedly turned up over a year later with huge retinues in tow!) Midnight of the 6th is considered a particularly liminal time.
(also @Cleverchops) Gratitude's an interesting one, it's surprisingly easy to take what we have for granted, perhaps because we have so much. I know in harder times gratitude for good things was more automatic.
I also love seeing others lives and it's particularly lovely to get glimpses of places we may never get to otherwise see.
@IngenTing Your wool and warmth knowledge is being listened to with interest, along with @Bimblesalong. Necessity and bigger wants have meant choosing to put up with a lot, but am reaching a stage where being better equipped sounds like enabling a future.
Gently envious of carveable snow, and sunrise, but most of all of living in a community that automatically takes on responsibility of re-uniting gloves with their owners!
@Bimblesalong Friends in Spain sent pictures of insanely enthusiastic three Kings parades, accompanied by the Pink Panther and what looks like baby Yoda, but apparently isn't! Thanks for the tip to check out Google. Also sent a recording of 100s of birds in the trees, very noisily announcing the day. Your chair is magnificent. I love the composition of woods, you have great taste as does@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense with another gorgeous chair.
Loved "surfeit of teenage girls." But school return sounds unenviable for all. @piscofrisco Hope DD's exam went well, and so know what both you and @RainbowZebraWarrior mean about reality being a far cry from NS apparent carefree solitude. Teenage girls are not meant to bring peace, not even quiet ones.
@lucysmam the tree is in the center at one end, rather than the actual center, though I suspect your kittens would be impressed with one dead center, if not the girls.
@imp2007 Hopefully dog will take it in her stride, but nice to hear you're ensuring you're around for her recovery.
Happy Birthday @AgathaMystery! 🎂Hope it's going well.
You had a rotating Christmas tree stand? Do you mean one with a motor? If so I have questions, it's something I've thought nervously about making.
@Confusedmeanderings after you and others talking about Monoprix, I have to investigate now.

Some extra elves have made it in (courtesy of adult Dc falling in love with them) helpful hints on what they are appreciated. Can just about see the three camels (representing the Magi) behind the ornaments on Christmas/Epiphany eve, and lunch; caramelized shallot quiche with mushroom and pepper sauce, Brussels with pecans in maplesyrup, lemon, sage, and onion stuffing, parmentier potatoes, honeyglaze carrots, and cranberry and chipotle sauce. No porridge here, still eating like kings, for now.

@Bimblesalong That's very sweet of you. Also snacking on "some of the indulgences of Christmas," namely the smoked goats cheese brought back from Belgium, on rosemary crackers. I think it's the cold encouraging piling on calories!

Bimblesalong · 07/01/2025 18:17

@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense bah to Waitrose. However, having chemo is rather an extreme route to accessing satsuma joy.

BobBobBobbing · 07/01/2025 23:03

Loving the beautiful chairs!

Life is hectic here, mainly work related. But before packing away decorations I managed to find time to make this with a box of "decorative" (ie not edible) star anise and a wire wreath that has been in the Christmas box for years, but not used. Need to trim the glue from the glue gun, but quite pleased with it.

Also want to thank.@RainbowZebraWarrior for the threads. Was wondering how people felt about a Nigel Adjacent thread for the year? Obviously wont have the book to guide us, but nature, cooking, crafting and general being-in-the-monent type posts, along with those NVN moments would all be welcome?

8 January

A celebration of sprouts and citrus

To read the press, watch television and certainly to scan the endless press releases that infest my inbox, post Christmas dinners are supposed to be different. A casting off, a release from endlessly rich and sweet festive fodder. Food that will take us from sloths lying imprisoned by our own greed on cushioned sofas to being energy-packed titans of the gym. Follow their suggestions and we will emerge flushed from our workouts and 'superfoods', pumped with energy, glowing with vigour and New Year positivity. At least that is what we are told.

Loving your star anise wreath @BobBobBobbing and funny enough, I'd been about to mention a thread to take us through the year. We had two Preamble threads this year, so I think we've definitely had more Nigel Interest. I'm happy to create / keep going a Nigel Adjacent thread after this CC one ends. I could even tie it in with the Kitchen Diaries book (or at least throw in one or two snippets now and again).

Edit: we could even call it the Christmas Chronicles Countdown.

Interested to hear others thoughts (I'll likely do it anyway, even if I'm just rambling on to myself 😁)

piscofrisco · 08/01/2025 09:13

'Titans of the gym' made me laugh ....I don't think I will ever be a Titan of anything, much less the gym.

I'd be very happy with a Nigel adjacent thread!

I love your wreath @BobBobBobbing. I always like the shape of Star Anise (s), they are such funny little things. And that's just reminded me that I made a second batch of the apricot brandy in the week before Christmas that I'd totally forgotten about and that should now be nearly ready.

I've woken up with a sore throat, a headache and the chills-so here we go again. Dd2 still poorly with it, she has never got much better. The dr said half the world has it and nothing to be done and it might go on for another 6 weeks! She did her exam yesterday, said it went badly and then came home and got straight into bed and slept til I woke her this morning. No exam today and her school does study leave even for mocks so at least she can stay in bed today and revise there.

I've also gone back to bed for a bit with the Dogs as it's very chilly even here. DH back today and I'm looking forward to having him home though I have enjoyed being able to watch what I want on TV (cliche but true in this house as all he will watch is sport, cooking shows or police interceptors-we are very different in that regard!).
Stay warm and a happy Wednesday to everyone

SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense · 08/01/2025 09:56

@piscofrisco I am a titan of my sofa 😂
I am definitely in for all-year Nigeing. I was given a thousand feasts for Christmas and found the third kitchen diary on Vinted in December - haven’t had time to read it yet - so I reckon they will keep me going. And a candle is not just for Christmas.

AgathaMystery · 08/01/2025 10:35

Love the idea of being Nigel adjacent for this year!!

I'm in bed about to do DD art homework (I know I know but I don’t care) and then I’m going to work this afternoon and teaching tonight. Got a whole new group which is always a challenge as I force them to become friends with one another.

LillianGish · 08/01/2025 10:37

Lovely wreath @BobBobBobbing. I'm happy to remain Nigel adjacent throughout the year - though I'm not sure I can think of it as a Christmas preamble (I find it takes the shine off it if I start thinking of Christmas much before halloween). In any case, Nigel is very much an all-year-round man: Right food, right place, right time as he says at the start of his Kitchen Diaries. And for Ultimate Nigel there's A Thousand Feasts which I'm looking forward to dipping into again after Candlemas when CC ends.

Cleverchops · 08/01/2025 10:38

Would love a Nigel adjacent thread!
Loving the star anise wreath & yup a candle isn’t just for Christmas 😆
The First Defence spray is pretty good at keeping the lurg at bay? I also think it stops things from being full blown that’s my experience anyway 😊 Hoping everyone is feeling ok x

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/01/2025 11:12

You're absolutely right @LillianGish it shouldn't be a countdown to winter, it should be a celebration of each season. I'm terrible for not living in the moment and always Planning Ahead. In my mind, I'm organised, but actually I'd far rather be more Present.

Gosh, not more lurgy. Sending hugs. This was DD last year and it felt never ending. I take Vitamin D and B12 as I've been deficient in all sorts before, although I don't know how much it helps with health in general, the symptoms when I was deficient were awful. We also had to speak to the GP yesterday about getting DD back on Ferrous Fumerate as it's all very well going vegetarian, but for an Autistic girl with a very limited diet who doesn't actually eat vegetables(!) and has previous iron deficiency, it isn't too good.

I am a Titan at lying on my bed; A master if you will. I stood outside ripping cardboard boxes up for recycling after the school run and it took me ages to warm up. I've also done a load of washing, so I'm now enjoying a bit of rest time.

@AgathaMystery I did most of DDs art homework during the nightmare that was pandemic home schooling. Needs must somwtimes.

I've just happened across this page on Nigel's website. It's all of his winter recipes, but filtered by 'vegetables' 'grains and pasta' etc.

I think all year round Nigel is an excellent idea.
Yesterday was DH’s birthday so after meetings morning and afternoon I had to cook a special meal. Today is quieter and I am looking forward to reading a bit more of a thousand feasts.
The weather here is grey and dank and the pavements are icy but although there was quite a bit of flooding just outside our town we escaped.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/01/2025 12:40

I'm listening to Toast on Audible and getting lots done now that DD is back at school. I've cleaned out candle tins and repurposed them to store matches, tapers and cotton buds. I've also been backing my exercise books, including the one I use as a Christmas planner. I've used Christmas magazines, and it brought back many happy memories of backing my school books; usually in wallpaper, sometimes in posters from Smash Hits magazine.

I looked on the St Eval website yesterday, and they had a 'something new is coming' holding page. I've just had another look, and they have released new packaging. Sorry to say, but after the fantastic artwork of recent years, it is dull, boring, and doesn't stand out at all.

I’ve just been to my art class. This term we are doing collage so I have made an eye from mostly winter ocado and Waitrose magazines with a bit of the Christmas radio times. The eyebrow is mostly red cabbage and sprouts 😂 DD1 came with me as she’s not back at uni yet and we did a joint effort. I don’t know if low-quality craft is very Nigel but it is quite therapeutic

Bimblesalong · 08/01/2025 16:54

Love the sound of the art class @SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense
Also love the idea of a Nigel adjacent thread throughout the year. I’ve just finished my 12th treatment (yay!) and am switching drugs for the final fortnightly 4. Even my very kind oncology nurse has described these as “brutal”. It’ll be nice to have a soothing Nigel-adjacent thread to read, even if I can’t post too much at first.

LillianGish · 08/01/2025 17:10

Glad to hear you are approaching your final treatment sessions @Bimblesalong, but sorry to hear it's going to be so tough. I am accompanying my friend to her next chemo session on Friday - six hours in hospital then she goes home with a portable pack for the remainder of the 48 hours. She's being quite chipper about it and trying to treat it like any other day out. She is neither a Nigel obsessive nor a knitter so I will be thinking of ways to distract her. Good luck to you for the final furlong - we are all here cheering you on.

BobBobBobbing · 08/01/2025 18:11

Another titan of the sofa here! I've managed to split the skin on the bottom of my foot which is super painful and making me even less active than before.

It is bitterly cold here and we almost ran out of logs Shock. Luckily log man has just been and delivered enough to keep us going through to spring. I do get a lovely peaceful feeling looking at nice full logstore. Especially when I sent the children out in the bitter cold to stack it. Gotta earn pocket money in this house Grin

Hope we can keep you company/distracted during the last leg of treatment @Bimblesalong

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/01/2025 19:04

Hope nobody is too affected by adverse weather be it snow or flooding. We campaigned here for years due to persistent flooding and now have measures in place including a huge purpose built basin to take any run off. Local farmland is looking the worst I've seen it in 40+ years though. Temps haven't gone above minus today so we've hibernated after school and made a big pan of lentil soup.

@BobBobBobbing that sounds really painful. I hope you can get it seen to if need be.

@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense your art class sounds lovely. It was Waitrose Christmas magazine that I used to back my books with today.

@Bimblesalong I hope these last few weeks of your treatment go by as well as possible. Sending much love to you. A hand hold or distraction is always available here x

@AgathaMystery I've sent you a PM so I hope you get it x

SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense · 08/01/2025 19:19

@BobBobBobbing we have run out of logs 😱😱 just three whopping ones left that are too big for the stove so earmarked for the fire pit come spring. I didn’t fancy stacking it in the sleet yesterday so I bought a bag from Aldi and they are distinctly not as good 😭. Will have to man up and stack a load at the weekend I think
