The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles Readalong 2024 Part 3

1000 replies

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/12/2024 15:14

Welcome to thread three.

The Christmas Chronicles is the story of Nigel Slater’s love for winter. Taking you from 1 November all the way to early February, The Christmas Chronicles covers everything from Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year to Epiphany. Throughout the season, Nigel offers over 100 recipes to see you through the build-up, the celebrations and the aftermath.

Anyone who hasn't yet joined in, there's still a big chunk of the book to go as you can see from the description above. It's in diary form with an entry most days and is easy to dip in and out of.

Anyway, welcome friends new and old. Pull a cosy chair closer the the fire, light a candle, pour a glass of something warming and settle in.

I’ve been browsing the Japanese gardening tool site. I reckon Nigel might use something like these:

https://www.niwaki.com/kurumi-secateurs/#P00463-1

(I’m wondering if mn might ban links due to the potential for foul play with what they link to).

I think he uses a Japanese hori hori knife as I'm sure I heard him mention it before. Thank you so much for the link BTW, it's just given me a brainwave for my best friends birthday next week!

I think perhaps links are easier to keep tabs on (certainly through the day anyway) but if welcome any tightening up that they need to do. Ban any photos or links in the evenings perhaps.

I love those secateurs @Bimblesalong - and the price is reassuringly Nigel!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/02/2025 14:40

Those secateurs look v sharp. Almost surgical! I was reading earlier on the bargain thread that someone found lots of St Eval candle tins at TK Maxx for £3.50 so could be worth a look if anyone has one locally.

No lemon curd hot cross buns here in my M&S either, but I managed to get my cheesy ones.

Hello! I'm just popping in to visit, having been recommended this thread by @RainbowZebraWarrior . For those who don't know me I'm the person who posts the occasional Playmobil threads (the last one was an advent calendar with different scenes every day in the run-up to Christmas).

I don't post much on MN generally, as most of it is quite scary these days! But I am interested in food (I cook nearly everything from scratch) and enjoy nature and taking joy in small things. So I thought I would come and look at what is going on here! Smile

IngenTing · 04/02/2025 16:38

Welcome! @SoMuchToBits!
Today I've had some very unexpected time to myself! DC both at school/ barnehage, DH had stuff to do at home, so I went over to Sweden to do the food shopping. I love the drive over Funäsfjelltet so it was absolutely no hardship! At the last second I decided to throw my snowboard in the boot in the hope that the mountains were open and they were! After some food shopping I was able to have a very welcome few hours by myself on the mountain. A very much appreciated respite!
I was also thrilled to see that it's fastelevans boller (Semla in swedish) time! I treated myself to one before the drive home.
They are beautiful sweet breads with cardamom. Then they are filled with sweet cream, almond paste and sometimes jam. They are incredible!
I have a recipe to make them if anyone is interested and wants a little fika at home at the weekend.

It's also Samefolkets dag here on Thursday. The Samì are indigenous to Norway, Sweden Finland and Russia. They have their own languages, flag and culture. If anyone has watched the animated film Klaus, the little girl who lives out on the ice in the laavo tent is Samisk. Where I live is in one of the Samì heartlands, so Thursday is a big celebration. We will make bidos (which is a beautiful traditiinal stew) and some special bread. Happy to post recipes if anyone would like to join!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/02/2025 16:53

Hello and a very hearty welcome to you @SoMuchToBits I'm so pleased you've come over to our lovely little cosy thread. I think it will be right up your street.

Bimblesalong · 04/02/2025 17:43

Hello @SoMuchToBits Welcome to you and your playmobil families.

@IngenTing heavenly! A recipe would be great - if someone can point me to one for cardamom buns I may well have a try at that on my next bakerama.

I’ve been for bloods and then spent a gentle afternoon planting up the various white flowered bulbs I bought at the garden centre. They’ve gone into the ground under our magnolia tree in the small space I’ve allocated as woodland themed. Our garden robin kept close quarters with me whilst I planted. I left him some dried mealworms on a piece of rock.

I also crated a small fence to keep the hound out as he has a tendency to wander and dig. Not what I want in a freshly planted area.

IngenTing · 04/02/2025 18:05

@Bimblesalong
This is the recipe I use. I think if you use Google, you can automatically translate.

This is the Swedish version which is my favourite, it has the almond filling with cream, but the Norwegian version just uses jam, strawberries and cream.
Recipe here

I hope you enjoy them! They are perfect for morning Fika pause! 11am cup of good black coffee and a semla.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/02/2025 19:56

Those cardamom buns look amazing! @IngenTing I love reading your posts. I possibly romanticise them in some ways, as I know the freezing temperatures at this time of year must be so difficult to deal with, but a lot of what you post does seem truly magical.

@lucysmam sorry to hear about your boiler issues. I meant to mention this yesterday, but the day ran away with me. Slow cooker wise, I find that chucking some celery, onions and peppers in with a can of tomatoes and some meat makes a great ragu. Add in spices, garlic etc to taste, or add cannelini beans for a veggie version. Hope all gets sorted soon.

@Bimblesalong loving hearing about your garden endeavours and also the time you carved out to play piano. I allow myself sometimes to fantasise about winning the lottery and I'd hire a huge stately home and invite you all for a weekend. Of course I'd also get in touch with Nigel's publicist and he would join us and give us some private readings from CC and snippets from his other books. It would be winter time (naturally) and we would have a good sprinkling of snow. To have you tinkling on the ivories would just be the cherry on the cake!

Loved your last photo @LillianGish you did well to get in before the ban on photographs came in. I've got some ideas moving forward regarding us being able to share our lovely pictures. I've actually been working on a blog which, when ready, I could link to here.

@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense I remember reading once that the best time for bulbs to be planted was the correct time, but the second best time is now. I've lived by this rule for years. If things don't flower when they are supposed to this year, then they absolutely will next year. Just getting them in the ground is a win.

@dazzlingdeborahrose I think I'm going to re-read A Thousand Feasts. I enjoyed it first time round, and I'm always bereft at CC finishing too, so a few evenings of ATF will be just the tonic.

@piscofrisco Burgh Island sounds something else! I've seen it featured on TV a number of times and it seems almost other worldly. Toi far away for us (plus I'm restricted now with DD) but it's absolutely another reason why this thread is amazing. Sharing experiences here makes me feel almost like I've experienced a little bit myself.

I've been trying to get my meds right these past few days. I've been on high strength antihistamines (four a day) for decades for chronic urticaria plus monthly Omalizumab injections. They haven't been working, and neither have my pain meds, which is usually stress related as my Immunology consultant always tells me. I've finally gotten some relief tonight. I really don't want to have to go any higher (they are licenced at up to eight a day, but the side effects are not worth it for long term daily living) I once had a private appointment with a lovely chap who was a previous physician to our late HMTQ. I wish he was still practicing as he was easily the most wonderfully understanding man about my complex series of conditions.

lucysmam · 04/02/2025 20:04

@IngenTing those recipes look lush! I was thinking of a baking day over the weekend maybe so I'll bookmark them for a proper look towards the end of the week.

Boiler's sorted...British Gas man went above & beyond to get it working properly, ringing round colleagues to troubleshoot with him when the "fix" didn't fix as intended. He's ordered a new radiator for the kitchen, too, rather than repair the one that's there - smaller but will be more efficient since the existing one's at least 35 years old at a guess.

piscofrisco · 04/02/2025 20:07

That sounds amazing @IngenTing. I'm
Never sure on cardamom as a flavour after a bad experience with some cardomom ice cream but it's been ten years so I might give them a bash!

Sounds a lovely day in the garden @Bimblesalong

With re slow cooker @lucysmam all I would say is use less liquid than any recipe says. By at least half. Otherwise you end up with very runny dishes. Hope your boiler issues are resolved directly!

And a big hello to everyone else I missed-in between child activities this evening and rushing so no time to catch up properly. Tired tired after a very busy day on the farm preparing the lambing pens (!) for our 91 pregnant ewes. Can't wait to get in bed!

SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense · 04/02/2025 20:11

@IngenTing I'd love the recipe for the special stew, too! I probably won't make it but I like reading recipes and imagining.
@RainbowZebraWarrior brilliant bulb advice. Unfortunately I had a big manuscript land today so I didn't get them planted yet again but tomorrow is another day and all. It's seeming ever more likely as my ankle is really well healed now and the weather is perking up

SoMuchToBits · 04/02/2025 23:09

Thank you for the kind welcome everyone! I may only post occasionally, but it has been lovely to see all your posts. I struggle a bit through January and February most years, so anything that helps is most welcome! Smile

Hi all!

Been a while...both DH and I were really unwell over Christmas and only just starting to feel properly better.

Hope you all have been well (where possible) and that there have been good moments to make up for the dark times.

Not very impressed with MN just now, with everything that's gone on over the past week...and now their announcement regarding their new Pay or Consent model. Fed up tbh!

So, I'm going to cut my losses and do without MN yet again. Wanted to say goodbye and thanks for the lovely times! 🌷🌻🪻

Sending much love and I totally get how you feel. If you do decide to stay, I'm just about to post a link to our new 'year round' thread. Or if you'd like to send me a PM before you go, I'd be happy to keep in touch ❤️

A very good morning, all.

I've woken today with some energy (hurrah!) So I am grabbing the bull by the horns. The news is truly awful at the minute and as @AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras has just said, it seems there are changes afoot with MN.

I've made our new thread for our continued Nigel And All Things Lovely chat, so here it is and if we need to, I'm happy to create it as a blog. We shall see how we get on eh?

Hope everyone is well.

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior

Unfortunately I can't stay. I'm really pissed off at the attitude this morning from MNHQ towards their users, and completely unwilling to create, in my small way, any more millions-pounds-annual-income content for them. Particularly in view of the continued shit show in regards to refusing to employ adequate admins for overnight security and the disgrace of recent events! Shame on them, seriously.

I quit before for an extended period and will happily do so again, this time absolutely for good. Only got tempted back in for the Nigel Adjacent threads and a couple of other favourites, but have found myself aware over the past few months that I need to disengage for various reasons. So MNHQ have done me a favour, really.

Will message you in case you set up a blog elsewhere. Would definitely like that.

As always, wishing each of you well!

@Ingenting I never answered your question about hygge 😆😆 I think because I couldn't really do it justice in my mind! For me, hygge is mostly about my grandparents, and replicating how happy and secure I felt as a child when I was with them at their home. So I've always carried that with me in my memories and wherever I am I'm lucky that I can tap into that feeling. Consequently it's never really had anything to do with which country I'm in - and I've lived in quite a few, on several continents. But I do know what you mean - Sweden has a less hyggelig feel to it by quite a long way IMO, so I'm not surprised you didn't feel it there.

(My thoughts are with everyone affected by the school shooting. 😔)

Ah well. It's been good. Thanks everyone for your contributions to this lovely corner of MN.💐

ExquisiteDecorations · 05/02/2025 11:37

Wishing you well @AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras the whole MN thing is indeed a complete shitshow (NVN).

Bimblesalong · 05/02/2025 11:41

Fare thee well @AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras I wish you continued Nigelness in your life.

Thanks for setting up the new thread @RainbowZebraWarrior Will pop over later. Im off for treatment now - after this one there’s only 2 more. I’ve had a gift of nature today in the form of a sleek chestnut fox crossing my path as I walked at our village pond.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/02/2025 12:22

Best of luck with today's treatment @Bimblesalong and how lovely to have a gift from nature. It's such a beautiful day here. The birds certainly think that spring is on it's way!

I think Nigel would agree with you @ExquisiteDecorations I know I certainly do!

Best of luck today @Bimblesalong. Thank you for the farewell! And thanks to you @ExquisiteDecorations! I'm waiting to hear back from a few people before I go so I might hang out a bit for a while. I've missed this thread!
