Do you stick to a budget or go a bit extravagant?
We have probably spent around £40 on the snack cupboard with chocolates /crisps etc
And so far spent around £20 on frozen party food
We are thinking £200 budget for the food shop £50 will be gin etc
That's two of us and 2 cats

I'd say about £150 for a family of four but asda been a great help last year with rewards i got a 40 voucher and this year i managed to save 50.I usually spend 70-80 a week on grocery's so i go a bit over for christmas but i save and prepare.Buy meat on special in advance and pop in freezer so its not so bad ,i let the children pick 3 snacks they want to eat over the festive periods.Any 3 snacks within reason thats not chocolate as father christmas always brings it anyhow

IdaClair · 10/12/2024 19:57

It’s looking to be at least £500 for Christmas week which is outrageous and I’m having to spread it over a few different deliveries because I just can’t face such a large number in one go.

Moier · 10/12/2024 20:02

Just me and my daughter ( Grandson is ASD and will be having cheese sandwiches) so not a lot.. we get everything easy to do from M&S.. pre prepared roasties/ veg/ gravy etc..
Plus some nice chocolate biscuits and nibbles.. you can only eat so much.
Boxing day l go to my other daughters for a buffet with her and my other 3 Grandsons.. l give her £150 for food.

Lovemusic82 · 10/12/2024 20:10

I don’t spend much extra. We are on our own this year (me and 2 adult DC’s), we will have a take away Christmas Eve, a roast Christmas Day and Boxing Day I am on my own. We do like cheese so we will spend a bit on cheese, chutney, pate from local farm shops but other than that we don’t spend a fortune. We don’t drink either.

probably £30-£40 on a take way Xmas Eve and around £70-£80 on food for the week.

Loobylu66 · 10/12/2024 20:35

I always pre order my Turkey, sides and desert from M&S which is usually around £140 total.
I also have my ocado delivery on same day I pick up the M&S order so another £140 to £160.
Not sure how I end up spending so much as its only 4 of us each year for Christmas dinner (although some of that food also lasts until my weekly proper shop on the 28th

Meadowfinch · 10/12/2024 21:22

For the two of us (1 adult, one teen boy). I spend £50-£55 in an average week.

Christmas week, I usually double that, smoked salmon, duck, ham, a bottle of fizz, cheeses, sweets and puddings.

I enjoy cooking it all from scratch which means what I spend goes further.

Bakedpumpkin · 10/12/2024 21:27

£500 Christmas week, doesn’t go far if having booze / nice soft drinks / cheese and the obvious meats.

Motheranddaughter · 10/12/2024 21:31

Honestly ,I would be scared to add it up xo
4 adults here,2DC home from Uni
DH loves lots of 'bits' eg nice cheese ,charcuterie ,olives
Nice wine ,champagne
14 for lunch Christmas day
But also does it really matter,as long as you can afford it

worriedgal · 14/12/2024 16:55

6 people for a week and a family party of 20 people one night .
We have quite a bit of booze already but I think it will be around £700 all in including a whole cooked and glazed ham and an M&S turkey.

Sunnyside4 · 14/12/2024 19:43

We spent approx £200 on food pm, mainly two, DD&BF staying a couple of times a week.

Have approx £80 of this month's ideal allowance left. Reckon it'll cost approx £20 extra this month.

TheChosenTwo · 14/12/2024 19:47

We don’t add it up! But my conservative estimate will be about £1200. Christmas dinner for 20 and an additional 7 guests in the evening. Beef is nearly £200, plus whatever it is for the rest of the butchers order. I’ll do the booze run on the Monday before Christmas, usually a case of champagne, several cases of beers, nice vodka and gin, wine and good mixers.
Whatever doesn’t get eaten will be sent home with people as we go away the day after boxing day and any leftover booze will come with us.

pestoblush · 14/12/2024 19:53

I don’t find it too crazy because I start putting bits away (eg a Christmas cake or the sauces) in the lead up

our lovely neigbours always give us a cheese and crackers board. But in terms of meals - we eat the turkey and again and again 😂

but I will buy some nice steaks and garlic spuds and the kids get lots of selection boxes. Dh doesn’t drink so I’ll get a nice bottle of absolute and make some mulled wine 🍷

pestoblush · 14/12/2024 19:54

1200 👀😩
but I bet it’s delicious

I am a bargain hunter I think

TheChosenTwo · 14/12/2024 22:04

It is delicious and food is generally a big extravagance for us (our weekly bill has always been on the high side). Dh does the majority of the planning/shopping and all of the prep and cooking, all I really do is top up of drinks and eat! Plus I do my stint at the clearing up - it’s the one time of year I wish he’d had the foresight to put in 2 dishwashers!

ViciousCurrentBun · 14/12/2024 22:23

I do not add it up.
It’s always turkey plus all trimmings
Christmas pud
Shelf of various cheeses about 10 different ones
Champagne with lunch
Buck’s Fizz before
Biggest size box of M&S chocolate biscuits
Home made mince pies
Smoked salmon
Large boiled ham

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2024 22:31

Historically £350 to £400 pre covid. I probably provided about 35 main meals from 24th to 30th. I reckon it would be £750-£800 min nowadays.

Now, very little. Our mothers are frail. DH goes north, I go south. DS and Dil will be abroad. DD for half of it. Que sera sera. This could be the last.

Hopefully we can look forward to ds and dil and dd and future bil and grandchildren in the future and have big family Christmases again.

Same

Pre COVID, £500 was ample.

Now £500 is where it starts from.

Price's are horrendous

Xtraincome · 14/12/2024 23:04

I will shop for 6 days worth- 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th , 28th, 29th it will come to roughly £250.

Rough idea of a few meals:

24th- roast dinner for 5
25th- steak and chips for 3, fishfingers and chips for 1 😆 (DD2 doesn't like steak)
26th- desserts to take to DM and smorgasbord supper
27th- lunch for 8 - no idea what that will be
28th & 29th- 2 day Carluccios style spaghetti bolognese dinner with garlic bread.

TENSsion · 15/12/2024 07:22

£190 ms food to order
£260 Sainsbury’s for the snacks and general food shop (£130 on cheeses, pates, posh bread, crisps, pickles, posh juice etc that is only bought for Christmas week- £130 on milk, fruit, veg etc that is bought every week)

We’ll have four adults and three children for most of the week.

DarlingCoffee · 15/12/2024 07:49

For Christmas dinner alone I’ve spent £200 this year.

Nolegusta · 15/12/2024 07:53

I won't be spending much more than a normal food shop. It's just us (3 adult sized appetites) plus 1 older relative.

Are you hosting lots of folk though?

That's eye watering. I do hope you have a fab time but there's no way I could justify that!
