Do you stick to a budget or go a bit extravagant?
We have probably spent around £40 on the snack cupboard with chocolates /crisps etc
And so far spent around £20 on frozen party food
We are thinking £200 budget for the food shop £50 will be gin etc
That's two of us and 2 cats

I was £35 for my Christmas dinner. And that's for 4.

We don’t add it up! But my conservative estimate will be about £1200. Christmas dinner for 20 and an additional 7 guests in the evening. Beef is nearly £200, plus whatever it is for the rest of the butchers order. I’ll do the booze run on the Monday before Christmas, usually a case of champagne, several cases of beers, nice vodka and gin, wine and good mixers.
Whatever doesn’t get eaten will be sent home with people as we go away the day after boxing day and any leftover booze will come with us.

£80 on a normal week but normally around £150 on the Christmas shop, that Will include things like nice cheese, chutney, nice biscuits, some booze etc but not meat.

Glitchymn1 · 15/12/2024 08:06

Not including alcohol I guess £200 M&S.
4 adults, 1 child, 1 dog.
That’s two Christmas dinners and pud. That’s all we will eat- so very basic. Carrots, pots, greens, whatever meat two people want so small joint/ bird, yorkshires, gravy, pizzas, snacks, choc, steaks for the dog.

Our Christmases have shrunk. There used to be around 20 of us- conveyor belt of food, huge joints/birds, trifles, gateaux, cake, Yule logs, suppers, breakfasts - so I would dread to think!

For Christmas Eve/day I’ve only got 1 extra than a usual day this year.
So just 5 this year.

Usually we’d have gammon Christmas Eve and then use the rest up as cold cuts. Christmas Day is obviously Christmas dinner. Boxing Day is then use up the remaining gammon, some of the beef and some of Turkey with things like pickles etc.

I already have the gammon and beef as I bought that this week in Tesco (good club card offers on their finest meat). But we’re undecided if we’re doing Christmas Eve as usual or not yet! I’ve also bought a load of the snack type things we have over the Christmas period.

I’ve still got the Turkey, veg, sides, cheeses, dips etc to buy. Also some wine.
So I’m still looking at over £200.

Considering I don't drink any alcohol, our Christmas will not be that expensive. I reckon around £250-300 on main meal ingredients, elderflower presse and similar drinks over Christmas period, crisps, desserts, biscuits l, nibbles, etc. There are usually 6 of us, but this year will only be 5. Two children are fussy eaters so I expect there to be leftovers on Boxing Day.

Doitrightnow · 15/12/2024 08:54

I spend between £60-100/week depending on what I already have in. That's for two adults and a preschooler.

For Christmas it will be basically the same. We're not hosting Christmas day itself so no cost there, and on the other days we tend to eat normally.

GameOfJones · 15/12/2024 09:37

I don't add it up, but my estimate would be around £500. That's a family of 4 for most of it but also hosting guests for drinks on Christmas Day and a buffet for 20 people on Boxing Day.

I do try and shop around and get deals, but the buffet itself is likely to cost £10 a head or £200 once I factor in drinks as well as food. I've spent £50 on cheese alone from a cheesemonger I like for over Christmas.

Most of it I try and buy throughout December by adding items to our weekly food shop that are non perishable so I don't get hit with a huge bill at the end, but I'm still going to need to do a shop for fresh food next week.

I love it though. I enjoy having guests and getting together and having nice food at home.

Anothernamechane · 15/12/2024 09:39

My Christmas food shop is £100 for me and DD. That’s with my colleague discount of 10%. However that’s mainly just for Christmas Day and Boxing Day food and snacks (and Buck’s Fizz) and I’ll have to top up afterwards

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 15/12/2024 09:57

@IdaClair I am just like you. I can’t have it all in one bill. I did the store cupboard items and alcohol in this week’s shop.

I then have 2 deliveries coming on morning of 22nd (Waitrose and Tesco).

We are going away on 23rd for a week to a lovely rented house. There will be 7 of us (all adult sized and different preferences). I’m struggling to keep the 2 deliveries on 22nd to £500. And that doesn’t include the order I have just done. Nor the huge turkey which my DF is buying separately.

I get slightly sweaty thinking about it! But I have planned for it and won’t go into debt for it and am thankful I can afford it. It’s a precious time for us all to be together. It will be me, DH, DF, DMil, DD1(23), DD2(20), DS(13) plus our cat and our house rabbit.

lucysmam · 15/12/2024 10:10

I'll have spent somewhere around £350 all in, but I do not expect to do another big shop for at least a few weeks after Christmas with all the extra bits that are on the shopping delivery or picked up along the way!

YaWeeFurryBastard · 15/12/2024 10:19

For the 3 days 24-26 for 8 adults ours is:

Turkey - £120
Ham - £80
Other Xmas shop for trimmings, crisps/snacks/breakfast - £250
Champagne - £100
Wine - £200
Other alcohol - £150
Canapes/xmas eve food - £100

So £1k in total which is shocking really. Guests do bring some of this so we aren’t footing the whole bill ourselves. I’m always very impressed when people manage to do it for say £200 - I appreciate we could probably cut back on alcohol but I don’t see how the rest is doable! It’s not a problem as we can afford it and we like nice food/drink but I do feel a bit guilty as it’s so much money.

littlemousebigcheese · 15/12/2024 12:39

our turkey was £150 on its own and we spent another £100 on beef and ham so I'm too scared to add up everything else 😂

housethatbuiltme · 15/12/2024 20:20

For Christmas dinner it only comes out at £25, Christmas breakfast about £5. Its just the 5 of us and two are little.
