Completely at a loss for my mum: Help!

Yes, I've seen the other thread about buying for mothers but I'm looking for thoughts on my particularly tricky mother...

She has chronic ill health so doesn't leave the house very often
She can't read very well
She doesn't watch TV
She doesn't really use the internet (apart from YouTube videos)
She's not adventurous at all with food
She's not into make-up
She's diabetic so no nice boxes of chocolates
She likes smellies but is inundated and wants no more

I'm completely at a loss.

Her house need a full renovation which I'd be happy to pay for and arrange. But her poor health makes it tricky and I don't live close so its difficult.

I've previously suggested I'd buy her a stair lift (because she can't really manage her stairs) or arrange and pay for a cleaner (because she can't really manager her cleaning) but she's said a hard no to both.

For her birthday, I got her the full Chanel No 5 range and a Dyson Air Blade with air purifier.
For her next birthday, I'm planning on buying her a new sofa when I go to visit. She sleeps on the sofa and hers is knackered.

She'll be visiting me at Christmas so we'll go for a meal. And I'll get her a calendar that she's asked for. But, apart from this, I have zero ideas.

Please throw some thoughts my way. I'll likely end up saying "Can't do that because...". Please don't take that the wrong way, she's just an incredibly difficult person to buy for.

Heated throw
Lovely nightwear with matching gown
Full length hot water bottle - gorgeous fur one in White Company

Wool/silk mix socks, bought knee high ones for mum last year from John lewis and she hardly took them off.
Would she be able to work an audible subscription, with a smart speaker maybe?
How would she feel about someone visiting the house, mobile hairdresser or massage therapist / beautician for a facial?

Lemonademoney · 05/12/2024 18:14

A snuggly dressing gown and slippers, a posh hot water bottle or even better a heated throw.

OMGitsnotgood · 05/12/2024 18:16

My Mum always loved a new top or jumper, just because it was different rather than because she needed them.

Does she have a microwave? If so, a microwaveable hot water bottle.

Slippers

A plant in a ceramic pot.

A clock that shows the day & date as well as the time like this (Although they are advertised as 'dementia clicks', think they are useful for anyone to keep up with what date/day it is, and the packaging doesn't mention dementia IIRC. )

PeachPumpkin · 05/12/2024 18:20

Amazon echo or similar?

Something crafty like Aquarellum or diamond painting or quilling. I appreciate this sort of thing may be a non-starter.

Flower subscription?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 05/12/2024 18:22

A bed?
Why does she sleep on the sofa?

Gruelle · 05/12/2024 18:26

Some really lovely bedding and bed linen. If she’s sleeping on her sofa then she could probably do with piles of down or wool duvets to sleep on (or a mattress topper if it’s actually a sofa bed) as well as a quilt to put over the duvet above her.

I do think an Alexa or similar would be useful, but it doesn’t sound as if she’d be amenable to that idea?

ShatOnAndrew · 05/12/2024 18:30

Thanks for all these suggestions.

I did actually get her a heated blanket last year. And an oodie the year before. She has slippers and a hot water bottle. She doesn't really wear nightwear.

She'd absolutely crumble with an Amazon echo or smart speakers. When I say "technophobe" I'm talking in extremis.

How about a Bloom & Wild subscription? Flowers every month for a year.

MindfulAndDemure · 05/12/2024 18:34

If she doesn't use TV or Internet, does she do puzzles / colouring / crafts?

ShatOnAndrew · 05/12/2024 19:33

Flower subscription is an amazing idea, thank you! I'll take a look into it.

She basically spends all day watching YouTube videos 🤦‍♀️ She doesn't do puzzles or anything like that.

She had an amazing colouring app on her tablet. She's never used it.

Would she listen to audio books?

Similar but male relative. I’ve bought him a heated blanket as he sleeps in a chair. Always complaining of the cold.

thepinkcow · 05/12/2024 19:50

One of those aura photo frames, you and other family members can upload photos from the app directly to it so she wouldn't have to do anything at all

A robot vaccum

Some nice bedding

SeatonCarew · 05/12/2024 20:10

Start building her up a collection of different, attractive dressing gowns and lovely lounging robes for different times of the year. They will be very useful, look nice and give her a boost on a dull day. I started collecting mine during Covid, and they are real friends to me. To someone older or more frail I think they'd be a super present.

Minihero · 05/12/2024 20:13

A pair of Crocs or Uggs.

ShatOnAndrew · 05/12/2024 20:22

Some amazing ideas, thank you!!!

A nice lamp? Ive bought my parents a Turkish lamp as they like mine and the soft glow it gives on dark nights

GettingStuffed · 05/12/2024 20:29

A tea subscription. I drink more coffee but wouldn't be upset with one, or you can get coffee ones too.

If she's not very good at reading because of eyesight how about an audible subscription or you can buy gadgets that read text.

Daschund · 05/12/2024 20:30

HRTFT but struggle with reading at times so find Audible great. That, with a few books already loade and extra credits.
I loved the Thursday Murder Club on there.

Princessfluffy · 05/12/2024 20:55

Upgrade her YouTube to ad free

Tulipvase · 05/12/2024 20:59

would she look at magazines on the Readly app on her tablet? You can buy a subscription.

TrippTover · 05/12/2024 21:00

Digital photo frame you can control from your home? She doesn’t have to do anything to it except look at it?
