Hi, am I being unreasonable.

We have 1 DS who is 3 and for the first time is getting the magic of Xmas.
Every year DH Dad girlfriend has down elaborate 1st December box ( new bedding, balloon, pj, books) it's too much and we have said this.
This year my DH spoke to his Dad and said polite thank you but no thanks this year as I wanted to do my own and bring the magic myself for my own son.
He has had to have similar conversation with his Mum as she does Xmas eve box.

This whole thing is wild to me as my parents are loving grandparents but have bought a chocolate advent calendar and that's it.

Fast forward to today and we receive a message to say my DS 1st December box is at there's!!!

How do I handle this?

I think it should be left to us as parents to bring the magic or am I being an ungrateful Ahole??

I'd be pissed off about it not because of any vague ideas about "creating the magic" but just because it's a big pile of unnecessary tat. Extra sets of bedding and clothing that I just have to find storage for would annoy me. The books might be good but might well be duplicates. And giving someone one of those bloody elves is just a huge tiresome imposition.

This sounds lovely amd I don't think it would affect the magic you give at home.

I think it's just easier to accept the box. I wouldn't go upsetting people who loved my children by refusing their gifts. It's just going to cause hard feeling and it's just not worth it.

Just because someone gives you an elf it doesn’t mean you have to do anything with it

I wouldn’t leave an Elf inside the door.

3luckystars · 01/12/2024 11:33

No way.

And I would happily not do anything but lots of people would feel obliged to do the whole shebang if their child saw it and asked about it.

Many, many DC would love this. But at the same time, no-one has the right to fill your house up with stuff you don't need or want.

Since this is DH's family, I wouldn't get in the middle. If he wants to keep it, you could suggest that you get one item a day out of it for DS, so he gets all the contents but not as an advent box. If DH doesn't want to keep it, it would be a fantastic donation to a local charity shop or food bank.

Aww that is so cute and so very generous! If it was me I would be grateful and say a big thank you.
