Prep ahead Christmas breakfast ideas - not too sweet!

I’d love to get some ideas for a Christmas breakfast that I can prepare the day/evening before. I’ve seen lots of ideas for sweet pastries, French toast etc but I don’t want lots of sugar for breakfast (it makes me feel sick and jittery!). DH hates all types of egg so frittata, scrambled eggs etc are out too. DS is 6 but will eat anything!

Does anyone have a recipes or suggestions for savoury breakfast, preferably something that can be prepared ahead of time?

I really like toasties and paninis; I never usually eat much on Christmas until the afternoon/evening as it's honestly so chaotic with young children and prepping the dinner, but for years I've planned to prep a selection of everyone's favourite toasties, foil them up and wack them in the oven in the morning.

I'd make mushroom and emmenthal, ham and mature cheddar and brie and bacon, perhaps with chutney! Yum

Cream cheese and smoked salmon on a lobby bagel. Quick to pull together!

Talipesmum · 22/11/2024 23:15

It all sounds lovely! But for a day with so much food effort put into it, we totally opt out of making a big deal over breakfast - I think we just have toast or cereal as normal, supplemented by chocolate coins from the stocking :-) Food options proper kick in from mid morning!

Croissants with savoury fillings, eg ham, cheese, salami or sausage.
Or prepare a selection of items such as cottage cheese with finely chopped fresh herbs, sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumber, radishes, smoked salmon, Parma ham, fresh melon or figs, to have with nice bread.
Or the ultimate quick Christmas morning breakfast..... pork pie and pickles.

Fruit Salad, yogurt and salmon/blinis. Cut fruit and make up dill sauce day before then put blinis in oven for a few minutes in the morning.

We don't eat our main meal until late afternoon so it's straightforward bacon & egg butties here - egg optional. We landed on that one year and family requests it on repeat, but previously I've done: croissants with ham and cheese baked til the cheese melts; croissants filled with mincemeat and heated; salmon and cream cheese bagels; sausage rolls and mince pies; cranberry muffins.

And yet bacon butties remain the winner!

Ahead of time you could slice a Pandoro into horizontal layers, and prepare some fresh fruit, then it would be quick to reassemble with jam, cream or mascarpone and the fresh fruit.
It can look really special and festive, have a look on line for ideas.

Half a tin of celebrations is the go to in this house, Breakfast of champions.

Cheese and ham croissants or smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel.

Not make ahead exactly but so easy is this smoked salmon breakfast (no eggs!)

Buy or make rye sourdough ideally though a country style white works.

On the day: Sauté spinach in butter. Toast thick slices of bread. Put the sautéed spinach onto the bread, top with smoked salmon and then a generous blob of cream cheese. It's decadent but simple.

If you have vegetarians, sauté mushrooms as well and skip the salmon but add capers on top of the cream cheese for a salty hit. If you have vegans, sub the butter and cheese for suitable alternatives, olive oil is fine for the spinach and mushrooms.

Excluding making sour dough rye bread I can assemble this in under 5 minutes. If I make the bread alas it take 12 hours Confused

We have croissants (buy ready made all-butter and refresh in the oven on the day) - I like having a pastry with my coffee, and it's not sweet so it's perfect. Then we have smoked salmon on German rye/seed bread (the square kind that you get in Aldi/Lidl) washed down with Buck'ss fizz or straight bubbles for those who want it. Sometimes we have a slice of pandoro as well!

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 23/11/2024 09:08

Sorry, I know that doesn't include any recipes. But it's all ready to serve on the day, so easy enough.

SugarCookieMonster · 23/11/2024 15:59

Thanks all, I’m thinking savoury croissants or fancy toasties might be the best bet. Or, failing that, the stocking full of chocolate for everyone else and a cuppa for me!

We just have bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese, plus lemon quarters. No prep needed at all.

Sauvignonblanket · 25/11/2024 22:53

You could get a big plate of ham, cheese, smoked salmon, cucumber, tomatoes, dill etc arranged in advance the get some small rolls baked or reheated in the oven

SereneCapybara · 26/11/2024 07:46

Lay out a platter of smoked salmon, fresh lemon wedges, dill, black pepper in advance and chill. Then just toast bagels in the morning and serve with a pot of good cream cheese and rye bread as an alternative. Best Christmas Day breakfast ever. People who want eggs to have creamy scrambled eggs.

You could do the same with thick sliced salt beef from a good deli - but heat it in the microwave for a couple of seconds so it is steaming, and serve with sliced dill cucumbers and horseradish with bagels or rye bread or that gorgeous caraway seed bread.

Pigs in blankets on barms. Takes 5-10 mins to heat up.

psuedocream3 · 26/11/2024 07:56

Either bacon crusty rolls or smoked salmon croissants for me, with a bucks fizz.

BoobyDazzler · 26/11/2024 07:58

We usually have smoked salmon bagels with cream cheese and spring onions.

GameOfJones · 26/11/2024 08:04

We are another family that have smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, although I also like the sound of a savoury croissant, maybe with brie.

I'm like you and don't like sweet stuff for breakfast, plus I prefer Christmas day breakfast to be different from the other food I'll be eating on that day. So no pigs in blankets but they're great on a baguette on boxing day morning!

Arduenna · 26/11/2024 08:04

I do scooping gorgonzola on toast (much less faff than regular cheese on toast because it's spreadable) with slices of pear and toasted walnuts. Only takes two minutes but feels a bit fancy!

reluctantlogin · 26/11/2024 08:13

I like to eat most of aTerry’s chocolate orange. We always found one in our stockings and my Mum relaxed her rules on liimited sweets and not eating food other than at the table for that one day only! It was a real treat. It still is and I’m 65!

mumtotwo11 · 26/11/2024 08:30

Aldi normally do a Christmas tree chocolate chip brioche thing - I usually just buy that for xmas breakfast x

MidnightPatrol · 26/11/2024 08:33

Agree on smoked salmon - no cooking!!

I have however seen these cute pancake reindeer faces on instagram - google reindeer pancakes and examples will come up. Looks easy and probably enjoyed by six year old!
