Chutneys and crackers for cheeseboard

Inspired by the wonderful cheese thread I’m planning our Christmas cheeseboard. I’m always happy with the cheeses but not particularly inspired by the crackers. So what crackers do you recommend? And any recommendations for chutneys or other accompaniments that make it even more delicious? Thank you

M&S Ale & Caramelised Onion Chutney. Food of the gods.

Thank you. This thread is off to a good start already. DS1 used to adore National Trust red onion chutney but they seem to have stopped making it so I am on the look out for a good new one.

Fortnum and Mason fig chutney is divine. Cheaper version - not quite a nice (but fine if you've never tasted the Fortnum's) Grin is Waitrose own fig chutney.

Wilkin &Sons chutneys are good. Cracker wise look at some good plain water biscuits and also Toast for Cheese.

Add simple grapes, some fresh figs and maybe some honey to drizzle. Also look at pickled pears or walnuts.

Quince paste - membrillo- is delicious. You can normally get it at good delis.

Raquelos · 20/11/2024 18:17

Miller's Toast Fig & Sultana are bloody lovely IMO, I have bought them at Waitrose, but they might be sold elsewhere as well

I'm also a big fan of Peter's Yard crackers in their various flavours, a nice crunch and a great foil for all the lovely cheese (drools over the thought of Christmas cheese boards). 🧀

ItsYourMoneyRalf · 20/11/2024 18:51

Peters yard without a doubt. love the charcoal ones, delish

PersisFord · 20/11/2024 21:54

I came on here to say Peters yard, they are amazing. BUT I also have a secret passion for Hovis plain digestives with a really strong cheddar and some chutney.

I made chutney one year and it was delicious but my whole house stank for months.

I'm a big fan of Carr's cheese melt crackers tbh.

As well as good chutneys/fruit I also love a pile of dates and nuts on a cheeseboard.

happy44 · 20/11/2024 22:16

Chilli jam!
Love all the chutneys
And every cracker mentioned so far is a winner

Nairns rough oatcakes. With blacksticks blue cheese

Oops sorry, didn't mean to quote you Autumnweddingguest

Millers Damsels and Bath Squares. M and S flatbreads

averylongtimeago · 20/11/2024 22:30

I usually make my own chutney- this year a pear and ginger one and a version of Delia's Christmas chutney- only made with dried apricots , dried cranberries and golden sultanas instead of dates and raisins.

I like a mix of crackers and cheeses, some good tasty hard cheese plus Stilton with apricots and that goats cheese that's been rolled in black pepper.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/11/2024 22:31

I love all the artisanal stuff, but Co-Op Carmelized Red Onion Chutney is delicious.

anibendod · 21/11/2024 05:35

pretzel thins (half way between a crisp and a cracker) are a nice addition. M&S and aldi both carry these.

grapes, sliced apple and sliced pear are nice too. The latter two in particular are lovely used as a cracker. Castello do a creamy blue brie which is divine on a wedge of apple (or anything else for that matter!)

Chutneys are quite easy to make in small quantities. Two mangoes make about a jam jar worth of chutney.

Basically a 50/50 mix of sugar and malt or pickling vinegar, spices of choice and some sort of fruit / vegetable.

Put the fruit / veg in a pan with the other ingredients, bring to the boil and wait until the sugar has dissolved, then simmer until you can drag a wooden spoon across the bottom of the pan and leave a 'valley'.

Put in sterilised jars (B and M do small jars) either sterilise in the oven or put them through a hot wash in the dishwasher. You can eat them as they are but the flavour develops over a couple of weeks.

Tomato goes well with cheese. Dried apricots soaked overnight with yellow bell pepper, apple and onion with a few raisins.

Millers Toast. Various flavours available. I usually buy in waitrose. They have 1 flavour on offer at the moment. Delicious.

Blueuggboots · 21/11/2024 07:16

Nairn's cheese and marmite oat cakes.

Water biscuits.

RestitutionGranted · 21/11/2024 07:22

Bolli
Millers toast

Apple jelly (they sell it at Borough Market)

@mnahmnah those Brindisa crackers look amazing - are they huge? Can you describe their flavour and texture at all pls? Am tempted….

PerditaNitt · 21/11/2024 07:56

I have a mix of Peter’s Yard and some “softer” crackers (usually M&S wheaten crackers - plain, not flavoured).

Rather than the Jacob’s mixed cracker box (which is always 30% ”meh” options), the Waitrose own brand selection box is nice.

What do you put in it?? I make apple chutney almost every year from a DD’s windfalls, and despite being exceedingly moreish, it certainly never stank the house out!

Blueuggboots · 21/11/2024 09:04

The blackberry and plum chutney from Aldi is absolutely delicious with goat's cheese.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 21/11/2024 09:11

My favourite chutney is Spiced apple and pear from Lidl, perfect with strong cheddar.
A good source of fancy/unusual/weird crackers (good for Xmas gifts) is garden centres, strangely, but not B&Q.
I much prefer a water biscuit or plain cracker with cheese.
I do like a handful of Cheddars with a glass of wine, tho. 😋

So many great suggestions thanks all
