How much are you spending on your DC this Christmas?

What's your average amount you spend?
Has this increased or decreased in recent years?
What's their main gift?
What are they getting in their stocking?

My DS4 is getting a WWE cage for his Christmas this year. I think we've spent around £220 which is way more than I planned but I started shopping early and I've never stopped....
My DD3m is getting 2 small toys purely so my son doesn't ask why she was bad and Santa didn't come to her!

DD4 used to have a HUGE stocking. I felt I spent so much trying to fill it so this year I have bought a very modest stocking which I plan to fill with useful bits and peices.
I have: a toothbrush, superhero bubble bath, socks & underwear, a water bottle, some crayons, a bath bomb, a hot wheels & some stickers

Last year I did £250 per child (3 children) but they all had bikes so it was an expensive year. This year their big presents are £50-60 so hoping less at £200 per child or even less if I can.

Tbskejue · 18/11/2024 17:55

In 2022 I managed £150 each but I do also but second hand puzzles and books

Bex268 · 18/11/2024 17:56

Too much progenitor to others 🫣 but that’s because he fell in love with a very large jellycat and I wanted to get that and a really really nice planetarium for their bedroom. About £350 but we’ve only one.

I can get that. I probably spent about the same last year but I wanted to make a conscious effort to try and cut back a bit more now that we have a second so in years to come it's a bit more even. I felt this was the last year I could properly spoil him. I've still tried to be a bit frugal and done some second hand shopping!

A lot has been spent with teen and 2 adult dc but it is what it is. Adult dc have their own places but it's all things they will definitely need and use.

Lincoln24 · 18/11/2024 18:16

About £250 on my 5 year old, although that includes grandparents and aunts and uncles spend too (they ask me what to buy). Just from me, £150.

I felt I bought too many different things last year so have tried to reduce to a smaller number of presents I think she'll actually use.

My stocking is very similar to yours! water bottle, bath bombs, bath crayons, LOL Surprise ball and chocolate... trying to keep it simple.

doodleschnoodle · 18/11/2024 18:18

Strap in for the 'no more than £50' six-figure earners who will be here very soon ...

What's the planetarium out of interest?

I have two boys 6 and 2 and we will spend around £250-£300 each and this should include their stockings. We do a Christmas saving throughout the year which helps.

mitogoshigg · 18/11/2024 18:21

@doodleschnoodle

There's nothing wrong with modest gifts! I've never spent huge amounts at Christmas or for birthdays as I spent money on my dc as required. They were not deprived, they had a lot of money spent on them just not lavish gifts. They are adults now and I'm spending around £50 each

PMAmostofthetime · 18/11/2024 18:21

Too much but it's all useful or will be used.
Teen DC and young child not sure how people keep the price down. I use bargain threads and the price racks up. When do you buy phones, TV's, and tech if not Christmas? ( Teen)

What about garden play sets like swings and slides. Bikes, trampolines ( younger child).

We save all year and don't buy what we can't afford.

MamaWeasel · 18/11/2024 18:24

About £50 each here. 2 grown up offspring.

ChewbaccasMrs · 18/11/2024 18:33

I spend far to much and I am trying to get better and I think I'm doing better this year than in the past.
We have 5DC,DS28,DS26,DS23,DD21 and DD17 the oldest 4 were spending about £200 on each plus their stockings,DD17 we've spent about £300 plus her stocking, our DDIL we're spending about £70 plus her stocking and we've got 2 lovely joint presents for her and DS28 that cost us about £80.

Flubadubba · 18/11/2024 18:35

I honestly have no idea. I tend to buy for DD5 throughout the year (for xmas and her bday) and barely notice it. We only have the one, though.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 18/11/2024 18:41

Ds4 (nearly 5) around £130 including sticking fillers

He's got-

A wooden foosball table
Harry Potter plushies x3
Harry Potter Lego set
Leapfrog plus some interactive books for it
Where's Wally books
Giant dinosaur egg filled with dinosaurs
Spiderman onesie

Stocking fillers are chocolates, bath foam, Lego mini figures, fluffy socks etc

Ds 10 months I've spent around £40 on a few wooden toys because he has no idea what's going on😂

StressedQueen · 18/11/2024 18:47

I've got 5 children aged 15, 15, 13, 9 and 6. I reckon it is about £300 for the older three and about £250 for the younger 2 this year but their pile is a bit bigger regardless! This has relatively stayed the same but it was a bit higher than I expected this year - I was only going to spend about 200! Stockings, we try to keep to a minimal and only really stuff it with chocolates and snacks and then little bits like socks and lip balms etc. Things that are pretty tiny really and would look silly wrapped individually! Main gifts are hard tbh.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 18/11/2024 18:54

Only 1 DS - he's 5. Probably £200 on gifts and then £100 on stocking. Main gift is a new scooter, then a big hotwheels kit (from Santa) and books/clothes/monster trucks etc. Lots of hotwheels and small toys in stocking along with chocolate/tangerine etc.

It's creeping up a bit, I think I spent £150 last year. I'm trying to be strategic as I always want him to have a decent pile under the tree but know it'll be more expensive in future so don't want to set the expectation of OTT sacks spilling out everywhere!

isthesolution · 18/11/2024 18:56

Probably around £500. A lot of the things I buy though are things they need as well as want - new shoes, pjs, clothes, coats, wellies, socks, underwear, smellies etc. Then the oldest 2 want a new phone (which will be an older iphone model but still not cheap)

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 18/11/2024 18:57

Mine’s only 2 and last year I bought way too much (mostly second hand but lovely quality toys), she was overwhelmed so ended up just giving her a gift every few days for January.

This year making her some bits, new doll, and clothes and accessories. Hmm maybe like £100… feel a bit tight looking at other people’s spends 🫣

whatkatydid2014 · 18/11/2024 19:18

Lots. We always do but we tend to get a mix of things to do as a family (theatre tickets, cinema/restaurant vouchers, short trips away), things they need (clothes/shoes, sports equipment, bedding, bags, water bottles, toiletries etc) and things they want.

No33 · 18/11/2024 19:22

I hoping around 250. But I know I'll go over.

WorriedMillie · 18/11/2024 19:32

We only have one (11) and don’t have a budget per se, but I find it varies from year to year. 2 years ago, she had an iPad (£££), years prior to this and last year were much cheaper. This year, she hasn’t asked for anything specific (yet), except a White Fox hoodie, which my mum has offered to buy for her.
I buy a few “needs”, PJs, etc.
I start shopping for stocking bits around sept time, to spread the cost and take the pressure off thinking of things all at once!

When she was younger, I’d buy maybe 40% of stuff from charity shops and do super cheap christmases, she never realised.

YeahWellWhyNot · 18/11/2024 19:33

I have 3 kids and spend £150 per child all in, which includes advent calendars (I fill my own), a "tree up day" bag which has their jumper and PJ's in as opposed to doing a christmas eve box, stocking and main presents. It still looks a lot as I buy through the year when there is a deal to be had and I am a fiend for trawling vinted for bargains. They're ages 2-7 though so not asking for fancy brands nor care if it's in a shiny new box.

DGPP · 18/11/2024 19:36

Teens and an age 8 here, about £400 each on the teens and £300 on the youngest. Can afford it and like to spend at Xmas

PastaAndProse · 18/11/2024 19:36

Around £500 for DS (5). It feels like a lot, but the only other person who buys for him is his DGrandma, so we do tend to overcompensate a bit.
