I know they aren't the sexiest of gifts, but I keep hearing good stuff about water flossers and was thinking of getting my husband one for Christmas. Has anyone got one? Are they any good?

I got my other half one last Xmas and its still in the box. I haven't used mine for a long time either. They are good but a bit of a faff and messy.

way2serious · 17/11/2024 22:25

It took me a couple of days to get the hang of mine but I love it!

Voiceofreason92 · 17/11/2024 22:29

Thanks for the quick replies.
Do you think they are all much if a muchness, or is there a good brand

I imagine this may be a love it or hate it gift- so don't want to spend a fortune in case it does live in the box

I’ve got one

it’s a faff and very messy.

It exacerbates my trigeminal neuralgia so I won’t be using it again

Not impressed

HerbieFluffyDumpling · 17/11/2024 22:33

I love mine and use it daily. I started off with a cordless Waterpik, but it seemed to lose power over time. They sent me another out and the same thing happened, so I ended up buying a corded one. I find the corded one easier to use too, but it is quite noisy!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/11/2024 22:34

I asked my dentist about these. She didn't think they were much good.

I got one two weeks ago cos I got train track braces and it's fantastic and wish I got one years ago!

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/11/2024 22:36

Yes, love mine. Sorry, tmi but couldn’t believe the gunk that appeared in the sink the first time I used it.

Teaandsympathy34 · 17/11/2024 22:37

I bought a cheap one and I just find that the water goes everywhere

Lilifer · 17/11/2024 22:37

Don't understand why people say it's a faff. Just put the water in and press button. Only needs charging once every 2 weeks

Put your head down into sink when you're doing it and water only goes into sink, no mes

Isitfridayyetsophie · 17/11/2024 22:37

I have one and I got so much water everywhere, definitely needs practise to get the knack. Anyway, my hygienist told me to stick to tepes and flossing, so it’s not got much use.

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 17/11/2024 22:50

I've had gum issues but struggle with flossing, so I got one last Xmas. My dentist is now a convert because my gums are so much healthier! The whole family have them now and we all rate them highly! And yes, I have managed to floss the ceiling, my face and my eye, but I am better practiced now! :) Also agree re the gunk that comes away!

Floralnomad · 17/11/2024 22:54

I have one , I don’t find them messy at all .

greenrollneck · 17/11/2024 22:55

Nah, in my house they are the same bracket as the waffle maker, lots of excitement too much faff.

SwedishHills · 17/11/2024 22:59

Didn't find mine did any better than the flossing sticks with the two bits crossed over. My dentist agreed. RIP water flosser.

DottyDodger · 17/11/2024 23:06

I bought a no brand, unexposed from Amazon. Took a few goes to get the hang of mine. Very messy and water went everywhere.

I love using it now I know how, battery lasts well and it's very powerful. However, I just don't bother using it, which is a shame as it's brilliant. Just a bit of a faff.

DottyDodger · 17/11/2024 23:06

Inexpensive*

Floralnomad · 17/11/2024 23:07

The basic Waterpik brand ones are reduced to £30 in Boots at the moment

PiggyPigalle · 17/11/2024 23:07

Just lean over the basin with mouth slightly open, no mess. Only don't turn it on before putting it on tooth.

You'll need a battery shaver point for the tank version and somewhere for it to stand. Travel version is rechargeable.

Hygienist don't like them as they think you will give up the Tepe brushes. I can Tepe all my teeth but still get bits out with Waterpik after.
It won't clear plaque, whatever the blurb says, only Tepe or floss does that.

Negroany · 17/11/2024 23:09

It's like trying to clean your teeth with a fire extinguisher.

I got used to it. Didn't find it "got anything out" though. And then I stopped using it. It's the bathroom equivalent of a bread maker.

SausageinaBun · 17/11/2024 23:11

Can anyone recommend a brand/model please?

LuLuRN · 17/11/2024 23:13

I love my water flosser. I have dental implants so it's an essential piece of kit for cleaning them.
Took a few days to get the hang of it & I always use slightly warm water as it's a bit gentler.

MoonlightMedicine · 17/11/2024 23:17

I love mine. It's really really helped my gum health and sensitivity pain as well.

Why is it an essential bit of kit for implants?
