We haven’t booked anything yet but I’ve had a look and everything still seems to have loads of availability when this time last year most things were nearly or completely sold out!!

I did think that it probably has a lot to do with the cost of living but we were all struggling last year too so it must be more than that 🤷‍♀️

Why are you on the Xmas board if you don’t do Xmas😂

Felt like adding something.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/11/2024 09:26

I've never done anything... so this year will be the same as usual. Peace and quiet with my bank balance in tact!

Tadpolecat · 17/11/2024 09:32

Doing more this year than we ever have before as we have a nearly 3 year old this year, who is starting to 'get' Christmas a bit more!
Went to light switch on yesterday in our town - not very enjoyable as too crowded!
Thinking of 2 local Santa visits.
Going to a couple of 'Land of lights'
Perhaps doing a Christmas train ride

Greentreesandbushes · 17/11/2024 09:34

Christmas light switch on in town, school Xmas Fayre, Panto between Christmas and New Year, Mass on Christmas morning

Scooby2024 · 17/11/2024 09:36

We have a few things but we chose to do three small things instead of the big expensive thing. We are going to see Santa at a garden centre, a railway trip on Xmas eve and a breakfast with Santa. These worked out cheaper than doing a Santa/light thing at a local children's park. We really like experiences around Xmas but trying to rein in the pennies where we can.

SchoolDilemma17 · 17/11/2024 09:37

One National Trust (we are members)
participating in a charity Santa Run
One Light trail

no panto this year as going abroad for Christmas (to see family) and saving money for activities and trips there.

Noidea2024 · 17/11/2024 09:55

We are doing:

  • skating & afternoon tea with Santa with the cousins
  • Harry Potter Studio Tour @ Christmas
  • Panto
  • National Trusts (but we're members)
  • Skatibg & lunch with friends.

It Is just the four of us on Christmas Day, and we sonnt have much family, so the events around Christmas are really a bigger thing than the day itself, which is normally quiet and a bit of an anticlimax, as much as we strive for it not to be.

Oganesson118 · 17/11/2024 09:57

Christmas lights switch on at a local country pub (they make a bit of a do of it with Santa, donkeys, kids disco etc)
Christmas Parade in town (my daughter is taking part in it)
Santa Train
Christmas at Sundown Adventureland
Kids Christmas party at the cricket club
Kids Christmas party at a play gym

There are some school based things as well, and we will go to Christingle at the church.

May still book one of the lights trails that's not too far away.

funinthesun19 · 17/11/2024 10:10

Got the pantomime booked and will take the kids to Santa’s grotto.
There’s some local outdoorsy stuff going on too which we will go to too.

A couple of might dos:
Christmas party

Breakfast with Santa

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/11/2024 10:10

So far only a carol concert including Gdd’s primary school choir.

At a guess I’d say that CoL will be the reason things are still available. Everything seems so scarily expensive, esp. for a family with a couple of children. I haven’t yet checked prices for the local seasonal ice rink, but I’m fully expecting them to be £££.
And last time we went they couldn’t even provide loos conveniently near - I had to carry small Gds with his skates on quite a distance but still had to stop in a convenient secluded corner - where he called very loudly (still had his gloves on) ‘I can’t get my willy out!’ 😂

pumpkinpillow · 17/11/2024 10:13

Just booked panto tickets for New Year's Eve.
We will go to New Year's Day fireworks in Cromer.
Both with extended family.
I might wander down to see our village Xmas tree lights switch on.
I don't tend to plan pre-Xmas events (lights, markets etc just go if I haven't got anything else on).
Used to take the kids to see Father Christmas but they're big lumps now.
Oh I have 4 Xmas parties (run club, circuits club, book club and my wild swimming pals) - so they count?

RedRiverShore5 · 17/11/2024 10:30

No DC but we will probably go to a couple of Christmas markets and see the town light switch on.

Next year though we have already booked our caravan in at Chatsworth in November so we can go the Christmas market and house there. Site looks practically fully booked now.

Rainbow1901 · 17/11/2024 10:35

We are booked for a Christmas Panto, Santa Express Train Trip and a trip to the local garden centre for a new decoration for the the Christmas tree (tradition!) We save towards Christmas throughout the year so when it comes to booking these things it doesn't hit the pocket so hard. Done the lights at Blackpool which is pretty much a freebie (bar fish and chips and a few 2ps on the machines with GCs)
Bear in mind though that there are a few sets of GPs as well as GGPs so lots for people to do and a large age range to cater for. In ours, we have 11 GCs ranging from 18 months up to 20 years - the eldest has always decorated our tree so you don't always need to go out. Just swop the hot choc for a glass of mulled wine!!
But this year, just for us we are booked for a show in Manchester, staying overnight and doing the Christmas Markets which we haven't done for a few years. Looking forward to the foodie bits and mulled wine!! 😋

gettingolderbutcooler · 17/11/2024 10:42

Panto on Christmas Eve.
Night out in London with kids, staying at a Premier Inn.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 17/11/2024 14:43

DH and I (and sometimes DS who is 15) volunteer at our village hall, so we are partly responsible for making Christmas happen in our village 😂. I’m hosting the Christmas quiz, we have a Christmas family night, providing refreshments at the Christmas tree switch on and a NYE party. We also have a Christmas meal with the dog’s agility group (minus the dogs), oh and the Christmas party with the dogs. That should fill up most weekends in December and it’s all free except drinks on the family night and NYE.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 17/11/2024 17:23

Agree @Ilovelurchers .

This year we’ve paid for 1 Santa visit, I’ve done 2 in the past one big experience and 1 at our local fire station for charity. This year we’ve done a far cheaper local visit, no big experience and we can’t do the fire station Santa as we have a birthday party. We have 2 birthday parties this year in December weekends, both locked in by the parents early as in the past no one has been free.

All other events are free, we have 2 school Christmas fairs from our DDs schools, there are also other school and community fairs locally if we want to attend. Our towns light switch on, plus other local towns light switch ins. Plenty of the churches are doing Christmas carol services. There’s a few Santa dashes in local areas. School nativity.

So much free stuff and that dosnt include getting the house ready, Christmas crafts at home, movie nights etc..

Growing up we never did any kind of Christmas stuff that cost money other than maybe a panto and they were mainly with school. My DFs company always threw a big kids party back then though. I remember in the early years lots of hours spent checking the bulbs on the lights, making sure they were all screwed in, fighting about whose turn it was to but the Angel in the tree, my DF trying not to swear every time he stood on a drawing pin he’d dropped when putting the decs up, checking the radio and tv times for our festive viewing, TOTPs countdown…

Its nice doing big things but I don’t think it’s needed every year nor do I think it’s actually necessary especially if you can’t afford it, we actually asked our DDs (12, 10 & 7yo) this year and they weren’t interested in doing shows, 4 hours Santa experiences. My 7yo asked to see Santa that visits a local treehouse, my 10yo said yes as she remembers going with her nursery and loving it. Our 12yo knows the truth and was happy to go along with her sisters. All said no to any shows or other trips but all want to go to the community based events.

At the same time I get the fear you feel that your DCs are missing out. My in-laws are far better off financially that us, every school holidays they go away and fill everyday with costly activities. I use to feel I needed to give my DDs that but now I don’t because now they tell me what they want to do and they don’t care that their cousins go overseas 4 times a year or do loads of events, they are happy with what we can do.

I love the idea of a Christmas Day swim.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/11/2024 07:45

Going to the royal observatory for a Stars night

Also got an Advent course at church to go to Smile

I've got loads planned, it will be lovely

Gsgsyska · 18/11/2024 07:54

We’re doing;

1.A few trips to the local Christmas markets for a ride on the carousel and chocolate strawberries
2.Watching a Christmas film accompanied by an orchestra at the theatre
3.A Santa steam train
4.Christmas eve theatre and a restaurant meal
5.A twixmas trip to the theatre with friends

SchoolQuery1981 · 18/11/2024 07:58

We have the school fete, one of those light shows (like Christmas at Kew but more local this year), we'll go.to a carol service (and the school carol service). And DH ans I have booked a nice lunch on the last day before school breaks up.

Sometimes we do more (a show or similar) but this is the standard.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 18/11/2024 07:59

@TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole I love the IDEA. I’m not sure I’m going to love the absolutely freezing water Grin

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/11/2024 08:17

We dont have anything booked for the first time in years. Will go ice skating, kids are past Fc visits, never liked panto and no school events. We will keep to our family tradition of a Christmas Eve walk to a local road of beautiful houses that all decorate for charity.

TheHighPriestess1 · 18/11/2024 08:24

No nothing planned and doubt I will be it’s a bit sad really

TheBirdintheCave · 18/11/2024 10:11

BackToRealitySigh · 16/11/2024 21:16

Agree so much more availability than usual. I haven't booked anything. I'm being indecisive about santa visit.
Youngest is 10 and still believes.
Older 1 is 13 and found Marsh Farm apart from ice skating too young.
Following for ideas. I'd say I'm between Tulleys/Chessington/Hobbledown Heath/Legoland at the moment. Have done Merlin ones before when we had passes.

@BackToRealitySigh

Hobbledown looks amazing! We might do that next year.

We're doing:

Legoland next weekend for our son's birthday :)
Leonardslee Lights
Hever Castle to visit Father Christmas
Christmas tree chopping at Goddenwick Farm
Chatsworth House as a stop over on our way up to mum and dad's.
