The man who has everything….

……but enjoys receiving something 😩

my husband is the worst to buy for. He has enough of his own money (& expensive taste!) to buy whatever he wants but always says he likes to do gifts but I try to discourage it as I find him immensely difficult.

I would like to surprise him with some stocking items and so far have; Aesop hand cream, fortnums cinder toffee and a pack of happy socks.

any ideas for the men who enjoy luxury items but have everything?

in case anyone wonders what his interests are they are coffee and running but I wouldn’t dare to buy anything as he has it all, and if he doesn’t he carefully considers his purchases as he likes to buy once but buy well. I wouldn’t even buy him a pack of running socks or beans as he does so much research into what he buys that it wouldn’t be ‘right’!

Ask him for some guidelines? It's a bit off for him to 'want' to do presents but have such high class tastes and the money to indulge himself for whatever he wants and yet expect you to surprise him.

I'd ask him for a few ideas.

Butterflyball · 12/11/2024 17:24

How about Jo Malone perfume, the cypress and grapevine smells amazing

Vroom you have described him to a tee, that's exactly how he is and what he wants!

Monogram belt.
A row of vines from his favourite winery
Leather gloves with silk or cashmere lining
Small picture of your house or the place you first met / etc as applicable.
Some olive oil or balsamic vinegar
Dish for money etc when he empties his pockets
Some packet of retro sweets/ crisps

Questionary · 12/11/2024 19:35

He sounds hard work!

cashmere scarf
Posh gloves

tickets to an event he would like

MsSquiz · 12/11/2024 19:42

DH is a bit like this so I usually get him:
A gift bag of toiletries - Molton brown, Elemis type things
Sweets - anything from a tub of haribo to space sweets (he's a sweetaholic)
Boxers & socks - because he always needs them
Tickets to a gig or show
Homemade vouchers - for a night off bedtime duty with the kids, to a day away, lunch for just the 2 of us.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/11/2024 19:54

He'll be wanting something exclusive then.

What about one of those 'buy an olive tree and we send you the oil from it'? type things?

queenofthewild · 12/11/2024 19:55

DH works from home a lot. He was delighted with a pair of cashmere joggers last year.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2024 20:01

Not unlike my DH. He likes:

Moleskin notebooks
Fountain pens
Specialist Earl Grey Teas (from behind the counter at Fortnums

GettingStuffed · 12/11/2024 20:19

I've bought my dad a vintage book (from the1940s)

AverageDuck · 12/11/2024 20:56

These ideas are great - he is hard work!

In comparison, a pack of Percy pigs and a St Eval bay & rosemary candle and I'd be so happy!

I'm getting mine:

hawkstone.com

Some nice boxers

A Simon's cat book he can enjoy with the kids too.

A sage bean to cup coffee machine in Black Friday deal

A tweed jacket he hinted about: www.walkerslater.com

Polyp0 · 12/11/2024 21:10

A genuine Roman coin. Costs about 30-50 quid

100-year-old balsamic vinegar. Cost about 150 quid.

WhyDoesItAlways · 12/11/2024 21:22

My DP is like this. I go by the rule of buying him something frivolous that he can afford but probably wouldn't buy himself. I don't know what sort of budget you're looking at but in previous years I've gone for big lego sets, a pizza oven, smart watch etc. This year I'm getting him some attachment thing for his 3d printer (another thing he bought but doesn't need Grin).

bows101 · 12/11/2024 21:24

Mine is getting Dior shower gel
Mini bonsai tree

I like the idea of a nice engraved pen too and nice note book (not that he would use a note book when he has his notes on his phone)

waltzingparrot · 12/11/2024 21:30

Ticket to next year's London Coffee Festival.

Sprig1 · 12/11/2024 21:37

How about a book about coffee or running?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 13/11/2024 08:23

Any favourite tipple? A posh bottle of something.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 13/11/2024 08:26

Pop up credit card wallet, surprisingly successful, rather expensive stocking filler last year. Saves all the fumbling around for cards.

Wolfpa · 13/11/2024 08:30

Lego sets are always a winner in my house

Bjorkdidit · 13/11/2024 10:14

What's wrong with the hand cream, socks and cinder toffee? Surely that's enough?

I'm like your DH in that I want to choose my own things. I also don't believe in sending links because when I've decided which version I want, and found the best price, I just want to buy the item. I see no value in designating it as a gift from a loved one just to tick some kind of 'gifting' box.

Work on getting him to agree to only exchange a few tokens, then you are both free to buy your own things day to day.

FourForYouGlenCoco1 · 13/11/2024 10:40

A paddleboard was my husband’s favourite gift (he is notoriously difficult to buy for).

He also appreciated a cashmere scarf.

I’m going completely off-piste this year and getting him a Bug-A-Salt and a weekend trip to the coast as I am just so stuck for ideas.

AverageDuck · 14/11/2024 17:01

I just wanted to thank everyone who has replied. I hope that this thread has helped others with those tricky to buy for.

I have found a coffee plant which may produce beans every 4 years, or may not, but a nice to have novelty that he definitely doesn't have! And I'm waiting for a hot sauce pack from Delli to come back in stock.

He doesn't do clothes, likes everything from Spoke because of the measurements and his body shape has been changing with the running. He barely wears a coat and wouldn't consider gloves, hats or scarves. He doesn't listen to music and isn't interested in seeing shows. He is severely dyslexic so books are out. He loves his phone and iPad as it has tools to help with the dyslexia. He also watches a lot of YouTube videos to help with running, DIY, coffee etc. I got him a bottle of that L'occitane almond as he said he liked using my sample and it's not been used. He has seven bottles of aftershave on the go, so I'm avoiding the smellies route. He doesn't do Lego, has a paddle board, pizza oven, fancy bbq, nice watch.

And the poster who asks if what I've got already isn't enough. it possibly is. I don't want to do gifts as it's impossible. There's not a budget as such, I work part time in comparison to my husband to fit in around the kids and all the money is seen as 'our' money but I wouldn't want to spend £££ on something not of his liking. It's his 40th next year, I'm dreading it! Merry Christmas all and thank you again :)

Sonyo · 14/11/2024 17:37

I got my DF some Beanies coffee this year as he's also a coffee fan. I'd never heard of it before (got it from one of the other Christmas threads) but you can pick lots of different flavours. I got the 12-pack which is on sale right now and it came today, looks great. Another year I got him a coffee pod holder (like those ones where you slot them in vertically) if your DH doesn't have one of those and uses coffee pods.

WhyDoesItAlways · 14/11/2024 18:20

Can I ask where the coffee plant was from? Sounds like a great novelty gift and even more of a bonus if it produces beans!
