Bought Mince Pies Quality Testing

Anyone any good at this?

I have some tesco finest waiting to get home and the youngster to help quality test, we are the only two permanent household members who like a mince pie so the other's opinions are irrelevant.

I definitely prefer ones with a hint of brandy/port.

So anyone else have any favourites, or just as important ones to avoid that are good year after year

Am thinking M&S will need a test run.

There were contenders in Aldi.

I've tried Morrison's ones this year (the deluxe ones) the pastry was quite thick and claggy so they were ok but won't be at the top of my list of favourites. Iceland's luxury mince pies are usually very good and they're amongst the cheapest. Aldi came top in the Good Housekeeping taste test so I definitely want to try those. M&S have been my favourite for a few years though (out of the above plus Lidl, co-op and Sainsbury's) we definitely like mince pies in this house

There is a very important distinction. Tea or wine? You can get away with more pastry if you eat with a cup of tea. But a glass of wine or port on Christmas Day? Needs to be richer and les pastry.

Thetrickcyclist · 06/11/2024 15:19

I buy the non-fancy mince pies, shortcrust pastry, normal mincemeat filling but always the deluxe/specially selected versions. I did love the Aldi sloe gin mince tarts but they stopped doing those a year or so ago. Aldi also used to do the most amazing frangipane-topped mince pies, they were my all time favourites but they stopped appearing 2 or 3 years ago

RoseDog · 06/11/2024 15:20

I've only had a Greggs one thus far I don't want to discuss how much panettone I've eaten---- the Greggs one was good, not very boozy but I prefer them less boozy.

My mince pie testing will begin properly this week! I prefer original mince pies, no puff pastry or iced, just normal pastry!

frozendaisy · 06/11/2024 16:29

@MrsTerryPratchettlet's do a both tea & wine but more will be consumed with tea

The favourite in our household has always been the M&S classic mince pies. I've never found any better than those.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 06/11/2024 16:36

I like to test the fancy ones but my ultimate go to classic mince pies are Tesco finest! Coop are decent too.

GiftWrappedSuburbanDreams · 06/11/2024 16:39

Morrisons rich and fruity iced mince pies. Yum.

35pEnergyDrink · 06/11/2024 16:46

DH swears by the Waitrose No 1 ones, with brown butter. He is very well-qualified in his field and has started already

DD has fewer years experience but always wants the M and S ones, with the little star cut out of the pastry

Edited to add: I hate mince pies but am happy to join in any stollen tasting events!

SettlerOfDivan · 06/11/2024 16:48

The Costco ones are the size of a small plate and have frangipane/sponge top.

They also freeze well and can be eaten after 60s in the microwave.

misscockerspaniel · 06/11/2024 16:49

I took one for the team and tested several boxes of Waitrose Gluten/Milk Free mince pies. Glad to report that I found them to be excellent. 10/10

MissCordeliasCoats · 06/11/2024 16:53

I am so glad I have found other people who do this too. My sister and I do this every year. Dh and I like a classic, no fancy added things, just a good simple mince pie. We have them with a cup of tea for trying. I did used to make them with the children when they were little. I am going to try to make Mary Berry's this year.

In the meantime we have already had M&S and Asda. I believe that Greggs are very good too if memory serves from last year. So the hunt is on but I do like other people's opinions on it.

Thevelvelletes · 06/11/2024 16:55

It has to be puff pastry mince pies in our house.😋

charlieinthehaystack · 06/11/2024 16:57

we had Co-op the other night and they were lovely quite boozy good pastry and very moorish
I must admit i love the Tesco puff pastry ones these were dads fave and I always think of him when i tuck in

Chersfrozenface · 06/11/2024 16:58

Good Housekeeping have already done their test.

Winners are Aldi Specially Selected All Butter Mince Pies.

But I'll probably buy a pile of one of the runners up, Iceland Luxury All Butter Mince Pies, like I normally do, as it's easier to get to Iceland than Aldi.

afaloren · 06/11/2024 16:59

Down with puff pastry! All wrong, Tesco finest are my favourite.

QueenOfThorns · 06/11/2024 17:01

M&S do a crumble-topped sloe gin one, so you might want to grab a box of those if you’re going there anyway Smile

MollyButton · 06/11/2024 17:04

We had a nice box of National Trust ones, and will treat ourselves to another box for Christmas.

Nice but pricey

Newgirls · 06/11/2024 17:05

Good to know that Iceland are still up there - had some lovely ones from there over the years.

i keep thinking I will make some but never quite get round to it

I don't like Mr Kipling but tried these new ones and thought they were great!

Vettrianofan · 06/11/2024 17:09

Lidl. No contest. Don't even argue with me on this!😂

Aworldofmyown · 06/11/2024 17:18

I love the M&S mini mince pies.

Jackreacherstrousers · 06/11/2024 17:22

I was really impressed with the co-op ones. Good crumbly pastry and very generous amount of filling......what's not to love 💕
