I'm going for it this evening - which one shall I kick off with?
I'm thinking probably The Holiday

@nettytree I love it but that's definitely a December film for me!

Muppets Christmas Carol.
It's the best Christmas film.

I agree have to watch it every Christmas

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/11/2024 18:17

I have never watched the Muppets Christmas Carol Xmas Blush

58 years on this Earths crust and this is missing from my life .

Oh my! Thank you for that pic! 😅

isthesolution · 03/11/2024 18:55

Nativity for us tonight!

I always try and leave the bigger ones until December, but I like to start with ones like While you were sleeping, or Christmas with the Kranks, the kids put the animated Grinch on today though. I'm currently rewatching Gavin and Stacey ready for Christmas day. I'm embarrassingly excited and sad for the last ever one on Christmas day in equal measure.

Me too! I live in the village that poses for Essex. It was a sad day when they packed up and left forever, about a month ago 😥

cheapskatemum · 03/11/2024 19:03

I can't believe this thread has 30+ posts and no one has mentioned Elf yet!

I’m sorry to say that Elf is my #1 most hated Christmas film 😬

delilabell · 03/11/2024 19:19

@70isaLimitNotaTarget where do you watch lost Christmas (please don't say dvd) as I've been desperate to watch this again for ages. I have the book of it too 😳

cheapskatemum · 03/11/2024 20:19

@Louri why do you dislike it so much?

Floralnomad · 03/11/2024 20:21

We don’t like Elf either . Muppet Christmas Carol is the best Christmas film .

Louri · 03/11/2024 20:26

cheapskatemum · 03/11/2024 20:19

@Louri why do you dislike it so much?

I just can’t stand Will Ferrell as the elf, seeing a grown man in tights acting like a toddler is not funny to me, I just feel a bit ill tbh!
I might feel differently about it if I had seen it as a child, there are plenty of other objectively terrible films that I like purely for the nostalgia factor having loved them as a child. But I saw Elf as an adult unfortunately, and after hearing how supposedly good it was it was such a massive let down.

OriginalShutters · 03/11/2024 16:29

They’re surprisingly effective films. I think the kids are so much ordinary, goofy, wonky-toothed children, not stage school types, and Jason Watkins is a genius…

Actually, can anyone suggest any of those cheesy Hallmark-style Christmas films likely to appeal to a Christmas-loving 12 year old? He (weirdly) liked Falling for Christmas with Lindsay Lohan and Best Christmas Ever with Heather Graham, so anything suggestions of similar but not too romance-focused would be great, as I can’t face watching Deck the Halls, The Christmas Chronicles 1 and 2, The Santa Clause, Arthur Christmas etc etc over and over.

It’s not really hallmark-esque but he might like Click and Collect if you have Prime.

kikisparks · 03/11/2024 20:43

We’ve already watched the grinch (animated) at DD’s request and if last year is anything to go by it will be watched approx 50 more times by Christmas 😂

The one I’d like to watch again this year though is Klaus on Netflix.

elQuintoConyo · 03/11/2024 21:02

I watched a ton of hallmark Christmas films last year with 12yo ds. After watching three, we made a bingo list:

Child with a dead parent
Gingerbread house competition
The 'Best Little Town" something-or-other
Famous person (eg newscaster, journalist, weather person)
Snowball fight
A person anti-xmas becoming pro
Santa Clause visit
Snowman building
Hot chocolate
Homely grandparents
Shop or hotel closing, being saved by pure Christmas spirit

Etc.

It's great fun! I can't remember the names of any of them, but they're all cheesy fun.

Real-films wise, it's Die Hard and Muppets Christmas Carol all the way. Polar Express was usually played in the deep hot days of August! Then forgotten by Christmas. We don't watch it now, it gives us all the creeps. We often watch Grinch Jim Carrey or Grinch cartoon. Hate the Holiday, hate Love Actually, hate Elf, totally unfunny. (But love Zoolander - Mugatu! And Anchorman, it's just Elf that fails to tickle my funnybone).

We won't watch anything until December.

Aaahaha this is so true!

And don’t forget “hot shot big city lawyer who returns to their small hometown only to find love and give up their career and stay there!”

IBlameTheDog · 03/11/2024 21:37

I watched my first one today too!

Cheesy channel 5 one - Christmas in Notting Hill. It was actually truly awful. The main female character was horrendous. Cringed all the way through.

Loved it! 🎅🏻

I'm trying to work my way through all the Christmas films in My5. I watched quite a few last year but there are still so many more! Certain things about them delight and annoy me in equal measure. They're always so pleased to go and get hot chocolate. And it's usually the best hot chocolate they've ever tasted. And the extras who play shoppers always have their purchases in festive gift bags. How many shops use actual gift bags? I could have been convinced that maybe they do in America but then watched a British based one where people also had shopping in gift bags so I think it's just to make it look more Christmassy. Which is nice and festive but also annoys me as it doesn't really happen!

He might like Haul Out the Holly (and sequel), Three Wise Men and a Baby and The Christmas House. All Hallmark but a lot heavier on the comedy than the romance.

I'm 50 and have never watched it either, and am not aiming to any time soon! Those muppets totally freak me out! Specially the chef and most definitely Beaker! Oh yeah, and the two old blokes on the balcony. shudders

I like Elf. I also like Arthur Christmas, The Polar Express and National lampoons Christmas vacation.
I've tried some films on the movie channels (Great Christmas?) and some of them are OK but mostly I get bored and turn them off. I'm not a fan of romances.

GettingStuffed · 04/11/2024 08:50

Don't watch Christmas at the Castle, the "British" Christmas is so wrong I gave up watching it, and I survived Santa with Muscles imo the worst Christmas film ever.
