Ideas for my 16 year old teenage son please!

This Christmas is proving the most difficult for me with thinking what to buy my 16 year old son. I have usually got a few ideas and bought a few things already, but there is nothing he wants or needs for Christmas! He really struggled to choose anything for his birthday recently and I ended up getting him an outdoor activity experience day and a pile of books.

My son is non-sporty and doesn’t care for clothes in the slightest. He has a PC from last Christmas and still has unused Steam Vouchers from his birthday.
He doesn’t want a watch or a new television. He had an iPad that is only a couple of years old. His aftershave sits in his room untouched! He is not fussed about money as he never really spends anything except for going out to for dinner with his friends and has vouchers for the restaurant from his birthday from family.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂

GoCube Edge
Board games?

MissyB1 · 22/10/2024 12:58

It's tricky for teens especially boys I think! My ds will turn 16 two days before Christmas! So I have birthday and Christmas presents to buy for him. Luckily he needs a new phone so thars for birthday, and his play station is old now so he'd like a new one, so that's Christmas.

Other gifts Im thinking of for him;
Oodie
Foodie treats
Laptop tray
Led strip lights for his bedroom
Slipper socks
Bean bag chair

dogcatbird · 22/10/2024 13:01

gig tickets
restaurant vouchers
bamboo socks
alarm clock with a light to wake you up gradually
japanese sweets
guitar

hard to say without having any idea what he is into!

ricestardust · 22/10/2024 13:02

Something practical that he doesn't need right now but could use in the future, like a Swiss Army Knife? Or things to make his bedroom more comfortable, like a clip-on bed shelf or a mini fridge for drinks? Failing that... weird snacks like American soda, edible bugs, Japanese candy, etc.

menopausalmare · 22/10/2024 13:17

Hamper of his favourite snacks?

AnellaA · 22/10/2024 13:19

At this age my db was really happy to receive a good set of darts and a dartboard (and a huge cork board to mount it on).

How about something novelty/surprising like a cactus or a mushroom-growing kit or a sushi-making kit?

Subscription to Spotify or similar?

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 13:20

Beats headphones

BlueChampagne · 22/10/2024 13:20

Something small to open on the day, and an investment? He can thank you later ...

laura1711 · 22/10/2024 13:44

Our nephew is a similar age and really wants a mini fridge for his room if that's an option

Flustration · 22/10/2024 14:00

Some non-hobby related things my 16 yo has asked for recently and/or enjoyed:

Ralph Lauren bedding, IKEA mattress topper and new duvet and pillows

Scented candle dupe in his favourite after shave fragrance (although I do note you said your DS's after shave has gone untouched, so possibly not one for him!)

Voucher for a full overhaul of the forks on his bike

Airpod pro maxs. He bought these himself after much deliberation and says he wished he'd invested in a pair earlier. Apparently they're streets ahead of the cheap ones he had before.

We are lucky that DS is very into his sport as this list spans about 2 years. No idea what else we'd get him otherwise!

AirPods or similar
Mini fridge filled with favourite drinks
Lava lamp or projection light
Wallet
Bracelet if he would wear it( pig and hen)
Light up keyboard for his pc
Mine had Logitech ones I think( ?)
New desk or chair comfortable for pc use
Oodie( currently £39)

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 22/10/2024 22:39

My DS16 is exactly the same and I’m stumped this year.
The last couple of years, he’s wanted nothing so I’ve gone down the road of getting stuff just to make his everyday life comfortable. My previous ideas are;
Oodie
Oodie blanket for the bed or sofa
Dressing gown/slippers
Stand for phone/iPad/PC
Mouse mat (I bought a huge one from RedBubble, to protect the coffee table from the PC stand)
Special hot chocolate mug
Luxury hot chocolate in various flavours
Redbubble sell large bathroom mats in the design of your choice which are padded and velvety to the touch which double up as a rug for his bedroom.
RedBubble for clothes/posters/stationery/bedding in a design/logo your son likes
Weekend bag
Tin of Giant biscuits
Spider catcher (used all the time to put spiders outside)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/10/2024 22:50

Does he like music/bands - what about a record player plus some vinyl?

Over ear head phones
Airpods pro
velvetiser for making hot chocolate
Oodie
Sonos speaker or apple home pod
kindle (if he likes reading)
T shirt of any favourite bands?
Driving experience
heated blanket (DS loves his!)

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 22/10/2024 22:55

Movie projector
Audible subscription
Noice cancelling headphones
Airline voucher (EasyJet/Ryanair)

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 22/10/2024 23:13

Ds16 is very much the same, I’ve been clutching at straws with him for about 3 years. He did actually ask for a new Apple Watch as his is apparently unupdatable now. he’s not into sports, not into clothes unless they are specific interests. Has everything else in regards to gaming
he’s getting a new phone for his birthday which is shortly after Christmas as he’s due an upgrade.
so I’ve brought him the
Apple Watch
eminem hoody
that’s what I call 40 years vinyl
minecraft vinyl

hes asked for 2 new switch games aswell, but that’s only because thier releases matches up to Christmas otherwise he’d usually purchase them himself.

have no idea stocking wise.

ZestFest · 22/10/2024 23:18

It's so hard isn't it? My DS is nearly 15 and I have the exact same issues. So far all I know is he'd like chocolate. We have just moved house so he's having a "new" bedroom as he needed an updated one. Maybe I'll get him bean bag chairs and a hoodie? Last year was a gaming PC and the year before a nice phone. I just can't think of a traditionally "big or exciting" present this year. He doesn't like sport or bands. I'll follow with interest!

MmePick · 22/10/2024 23:26

Mine has hobbies but is pretty uninterested in gifts too!

I do socks, a book (last year was Johnny Marr on guitars), sweets and that’s about it. Maybe a band t shirt or hoodie. Guitar picks and wraps for boxing. This year there’s nothing big he wants, so that will be it.

OMGitsnotgood · 22/10/2024 23:38

Electric razor?

Cinema or 10 pin bowling vouchers

Whilst he doesn't care for clothes, he still needs them. A jacket maybe; t-shirts or something to wear when going out with his mates.

Lounge pants

A collection of snacks

I know it's a while til he's 17 but if he's intending to learn to drive, there are apps to help you with the theory exam.

Rucksack

Wallet with cash in

If he used to like Lego, micro blocks are good stocking fillers for young adults.

Have you / he any holidays or trips planned? Things related to that might be helpful if so.

I think dart board might have already been mentioned, ours got played with a lot as did a table tennis table but you need to have somewhere to sort that.

Beanbag for his bedroom

OMGitsnotgood · 23/10/2024 00:01

Also does he have a portable phone charger?

Hollermoller · 23/10/2024 20:17

Thanks very much for all the great suggestions.

I was in DSs room earlier and spotted his gooseneck phone holder, which he uses a lot (found on Amazon). It attaches to his desk and he uses it when on calls with his mates when gaming.

He’s also got a wireless battery pack for his phone and an apple air tag for his keys.

ZestFest · 26/10/2024 01:48

I'm just bumping this as it's so useful to get everyone's ideas for teen boys.

sashh · 26/10/2024 06:48

A sovereign or other gold coin so he always has some emergency funds.

Shares? A pension. It's never too early to start saving.

A lesson in something he hasn't thought of. Riding, driving (yes you can get them for under 17s) jewellery making, cooking, blacksmithing even armour making.

It's not cheap but you can hire a cinema to play a games console for a couple of hours.
