Your favourite Christmas day board game

We are hosting Christmas for the first time this year, and wanted to introduce playing board games in the afternoon as a new tradition. It had previously been taken up with present opening and eating. We will hopefully still be doing lots of that too, but I wondered if anyone could share their favourite family Christmas day (board) games as inspiration?
It will be myself, husband, two young children, adult siblings, my parents and two grandparents in their 80s.
Thank you!

There is also a drawing game called Scrawl that we’ve had a lot of fun with as a family. It’s like Chinese Whispers but with drawing.

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/10/2024 10:48

Outsmarted is brilliant. So much fun.

Elephanttrunk · 20/10/2024 11:00

Games that have gone down well in our household;
Outsmarted
Herd Mentality
Telestrations
Dobble
Quirkle

We play “The Game for Fame”, it’s very performance-y, eg write and perform a poem, pull a face expressing horror, that sort of thing. Absolutely hilarious and even teens join in

RowenaCoxwell · 20/10/2024 11:10

Also, Snakesss but I think it’s max of 8 players

DelurkingAJ · 20/10/2024 11:16

We’ve had great hilarity with really old fashioned games like ‘In the manner of the word’ (one person leaves the room, the others choose and adverb, person comes back in and asks people to do XXX in the manner of the word…so if it’s ‘slowly’ you then might have to skip slowly or talk slowly etc). Might not work for the three year old but they might find the adults making fools of themselves funny!

Used to play this at uni…that was often an R rated version that would not be appropriate!

Our favourite Christmas Day game is Cards Against Humanity but bearing in mind your age range not exactly appropriate. I really can’t think of a game that young children can participate in that won’t have the adults bored to tears so I am following with interest!

Us too! But we play it on Christmas Eve at our annual pyjama party

Does it have to be board games?

For those old enough to spell- bananagrams is fun
Quirkle
Dobble
Rapi-dough is great, can't recall how many players you can have though.
Actually, I quite like the idea of a festive jigsaw. You can sit and chat and eat biscuits but also have something to focus on that people can be as involved or not as they want.

Do your grandparents know any card games? More old school like whist, or anything they already know the rules to might be nice, the rest of you can learn something new and they might be keener than trying to work out something totally new.
Or traditional family friendly ones.
Happy families
We had one called Donkey, which is basically old maid with picture cards.
Go fish

To include the small kids especially as they are usually better at this than adults- the memory game?
Can be done with normal cards but probably better for kids with picture pair ones. (You lay out all cards face down, take turns turning over 2 cards to try and find pairs. If you find a pair you get another go)

Pictionary was a hit when you've got a mixed crowd. Haven't tried the newer ones but have bought Ticket to Ride in recommendations.

Supermand · 20/10/2024 12:07

Dog bingo if you want to include the little ones

3rdtimeinflorida · 20/10/2024 12:12

Definitely Sock Game. Great fun and so simple!

iggleoggle · 20/10/2024 15:39

Buy rhino hero for your little ones. It’s a card stacking game and you can be fairy loose with the rules but it’s actually something everyone can engage with.

Definitely Sock Game. Great fun and so simple!

I came on to suggest The Sock Game too.
Suitable of all ages and great fun.

Starlight40 · 20/10/2024 17:02

The Logo game or Cluedo.x

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 20/10/2024 19:48

You can't beat Charades!

Another good one is the chocolate game. Get one of those huge bars of chocolate dairy milk, galaxy (probably not Toblerone, though that would make it more challenging I guess, or frustrating!) and a scarf, gloves, hat, silly glasses or feather boa plus a knife and fork. The person is given 3 minutes to get the gear on and then try to eat the choc with a knife and fork. Absolutely bonkers game. Can be fun or infuriating depending on the mood you're in.

YellowphantGrey · 20/10/2024 19:57

Guess Who
Draughts/chess
Battleships
Uno
Pack of cards
Othello
Shut the box

Have a decent selection and everyone can choose what they want to do as well as games everyone can play.

Just make sure if someone doesn't want to play, they aren't made to play plus kids may want to play with their toys

illiad · 20/10/2024 20:41

Saboteur card game
Hoy bingo
One night ultimate werewolf
Camel Up
