Your favourite Christmas day board game

DepartmentOfMysteries · 20/10/2024 07:53

We are hosting Christmas for the first time this year, and wanted to introduce playing board games in the afternoon as a new tradition. It had previously been taken up with present opening and eating. We will hopefully still be doing lots of that too, but I wondered if anyone could share their favourite family Christmas day (board) games as inspiration?
It will be myself, husband, two young children, adult siblings, my parents and two grandparents in their 80s.
Thank you!

Our favourite Christmas Day game is Cards Against Humanity but bearing in mind your age range not exactly appropriate. I really can’t think of a game that young children can participate in that won’t have the adults bored to tears so I am following with interest!

Not a board game but we do a quiz (made by one of the teens) and a game where everyone writes the name of 3 famous people and put them in a hat. Split into 2 teams.
There are then 3 rounds
Round one: 1 person has a minute to describe to their team as many people as they can from the hat without using proper nouns (eg no words with capital letters). Take it in turns until all paper used
Round two: put all the people's names back into hat. Do same as above but only allowed 3 words.
Round 3: same as above but only 1 word.
Everyone loves it. We used to pair the little ones up with a big person and give them a bit more time. Often they were better than the adults at round 3!

Oh this sounds great. Hosting a similar group of people though, I would say temper your expectations - by the time we’ve fed, watered and washed up from that pile of people (and those who want to have dozed off) not much happens!

(I love board games - we had about 10 new ones come in the house last year…)

But I would go for Qwirkle or Ticket to Ride for that sort of group (both are straightforward, don’t take forever, and aren’t difficult to work out).. Depending on the age of your children, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is good.

Moonshiners · 20/10/2024 08:01

Also not just famous people can be grandad or Spiderman or Harry Potter.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 20/10/2024 08:01

We love board games! You don’t want to be getting into lots of rules or complicated scoring on Christmas afternoon, so I would suggest more party games than board games.

We love the Magma Lawrence Bingo ones (ocean one is great for octonaut fans). How young are your young ones? There’s a big difference between what a 3 and 7 year old can do. We love Family Tension and Telestrations. Junior Cranium is also fun.

if you do want Boardgames, then Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are brilliant. Both have junior versions which are brilliant.

Blockbuster.

It's a film guessing game. It's so easy and fun.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 20/10/2024 08:40

For a group of more than four, Herd Mentality is great fun. It's a little bit in the style of cards against humanity rather than a board game proper, but totally U rated.

Blanketyre · 20/10/2024 08:58

Not Cards Against Humanity. It's horrible.

Newuser75 · 20/10/2024 09:03

Trivial persuit (family one)
Monopoly (junior)
Outsmarted
A card game rather than board game such as..
UNO
Dobble
Taco cat goat cheese pizza
Cluedo

gettingolderbutcooler · 20/10/2024 09:05

Monopoly

3rdtimeinflorida · 20/10/2024 09:09

Scattergories. Gets everyone thinking.

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 09:11

Not board games so not sure it's helpful, but we find simple games suit us better - Jenga, yahtzee, pick up sticks, dominoes; that way everyone can play (some of us don't have the attention spans for long, involved games involving lots of thought, strategy and so on). Might be good to have a mix of games anyway, I guess.

We also usually have a jigsaw puzzle on the go for anyone who fancies it. This year I'm thinking of getting festive themed mini puzzles to do at the table after dinner, but not sure yet.

A really fun one we discovered recently is called Poetry for Neanderthals. Again, not really a board game but probably worth a look.

DepartmentOfMysteries · 20/10/2024 09:11

Thank you for all these suggestions!! I love the quiz suggestion, and I'm intrigued by Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza... I also liked the idea of a U rated Cards Against Humanity. We have the family version, but even that I'd feel embarrassed playing with my grandma😁
Hats of to anyone that manages to play monopoly on Christmas day! Our little ones are 3 and 6, but will probably happily be left out at least for one game to play with toys.

Herd mentality!

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 09:12

We do also have Monopoly, Scrabble, and a few others in that vein. If you're going to do Monopoly I'd suggest having time limited games such as 45 minutes or something like that. A bit more achievable after dinner, drinks, etc.

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 09:13

@DepartmentOfMysteries my children loved Hungry Hippos at that age!

Twinstudy · 20/10/2024 09:17

We always play articulate. You can get a kids question box too so can work for mixed ages

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 20/10/2024 09:18

Going to go old school here but we still love Pictionary - always gets lots of laughs but there's no standing up which can put people off after a big meal.as you play in teams it is a good one to do that include younger children

Mylittledrum · 20/10/2024 09:38

As a group of adults (including a 78 yo) we played uno extreme after dinner while having drinks. It. Was. Hilarious. Though the 78 yo has a very good sense of humour and I know they're not all as spritely as she. But the kids will love love it too. That's the inlaws.

With my own side of the extended fam (nieces and nephews, sisters husbands and grandparents) we love balderdash (everyone writes convincing made up answers to questions and everyone has to guess which was correct). I have cards that my now teen niece wrote when she was 7 that were hilariously weird. Treasures!

Articulate is so fun (high octane, you quickly try explain a word without saying the word or closely related words, your partner guesses as many as they can before timer)

and I love playing moods (an acting kind of game, you read a sentence in one of the set of available "moods" and everyone has to guess which of the moods you were in.)

We also love Scategories but that's less a Christmas Day one as it involves a lot of silent concentration which isn't too festive haha.

unusualcolours · 20/10/2024 09:51

On your marks is great

Beautifulsunflowers · 20/10/2024 09:52

Herd mentality is great and perfect for a range of ages.
Also, the sock game. This is basically 2 long socks with various items in such as a dice, a monopoly house, a bottom etc. Split into 2 teams and spin the spinner which will tell you what to get out of the sock. The first person to get the item for their team with out looking gets the point. It was hilarious last year!

Dustinsfrontteeth · 20/10/2024 09:53

We love the Logo Game! It’s perfect for mixed ages. We normally play in teams rather than individually.

Norugratsatall · 20/10/2024 09:56

Rummikub! It's not Xmas without at least one game.

redpickle · 20/10/2024 10:25

We got a brilliant game last year called Beat That. We've played it all year and my teens have friends over for Beat That games nights. It's so much fun, a really good laugh.

afaloren · 20/10/2024 10:27

It’s a card game rather than a board game but Exploding Kittens is great. Doesn’t take long to learn or play and good for most ages.
