When does Christmas 'proper' start, in your opinion?

Just curious about this as I've noticed it's becoming more and more of a thing for people to say Christmas is over right after Boxing Day and to take their decs down round about that time too.

The reason I'm curious is just that it differs so much from how I remember Christmases as a child in the 1970s. I'm in my 50s and although there was always a build-up to Christmas it never used to start anywhere near as early. The adverts might have been pushing Christmas from about October or November, but in terms of decorations going up, Christmas music being played, etc - not so much until we got into December. I also feel like there was more of a distinction between Advent and Christmas itself back then (despite the plethora of advent calendars around today! 😄)

These days far more people seem to start saying 'it's Christmas' as soon as it gets to December, and consider it to be over and done with by Boxing Day. When I was a child it was advent until Christmas Eve, and then the Christmas period pretty much lasted until Jan 6th, encompassing New Year's as part and parcel of the season, with many/most people leaving their decs up till then. And to this day, the period from Christmas Eve onwards is my favourite bit, because all the stressy preps are over and it's time to just relax and enjoy the festive season. For this reason I'd never take my decs down before Twelfth Night, as old-fashioned as that probably makes me. 😅

None of this is being said in criticism of current traditions, btw - I know times change, and people should celebrate Christmas exactly however they want to, or not at all if that's their preference. I just find it an interesting phenomenon how the dates seem to have shifted so to speak, also curious to know if others around my age remember 'bygone' Christmases the same way I do. (Oh crikey, I said 'bygone', next step's a rocking chair I guess. 😅)

Thoughts?

Wow, decs up from mid-Nov through to twelfth night? I'd love to have ours up that long but it wouldn't be worth the mickey-taking from DH, he takes the piss enough as it is about how much I enjoy Christmas 😂

I am a massive Xmas fanatic and I love decorating my house, I’ve put a lot of time and money into gathering my decor over the years, I love nothing more than switching on my tree and having a glass of wine in the evenings it makes me happy. So I put mine up end of Nov

It starts on first day of advent. That's when I put a wreath on the front door and hang lights inside and outside the house.

But 'proper' is when everyone starts arriving home or school has broken up and the family is together, usually a few days before Christmas Eve. That's when the tree goes up.

I love it to last until NYD but get very twitchy about decorations hanging over until twelfth night. New Year is all about clearing the decks and starting afresh. I like to replace all the glitter and cinnamon scents with white cyclamen and fresh clean smells.

I’d say soft launch mid-late November - that’s the local light switch on and then Christmas music is allowed in the car.

Hard launch is first weekend of December which is our annual Santa visit plus getting the Christmas tree and decorating the house.
Then actual Christmas is the school holidays up until new year.

In our house it isn’t until the tree goes up, and that is around a week before Christmas.

It's my daughter's birthday on the 23rd as well. If it was up to me decorations would only go up on the 24th anyway until the 6th Jan but rest of the family like them to go up first weekend in December so I let them crack on.

But are you saying you put them all up then take them all down for the 23rd then put them all up again on the 24th?

That's a crazy amount of effort. I couldn't be arsed with that. DD gets an extra mini tree and her birthday presents go under it. I'm not pretending it isn't 2 days before Christmas.

Yeah I do haha. I just wanted her to feel special and that her birthday is a separate event. This year or next year will probably be the last year I take them all down though.

I really like the idea of separating it into a hard and soft launch especially when you've got all the different things to consider.

Dec 1st here when gift lists are done , decorations dragged in from the barn and general prep begins

Allthings · 26/10/2025 12:49

I’m a little older than you, but my recollection of childhood Christmases are very similar, although I can’t say I remember a distinction between advent and Christmas.

We normally had a real tree as a child which never went up until much closer to Christmas, sometimes only a few days before hand. As an adult I have followed much the same with tree not going up until mid December at the earliest and not coming down until around 12th night (may come down a little earlier depending on how 12th night fell and work). I don’t want to hear any Christmas music or watch a Christmas film until Advent and the earliest.

I like to have gift shopping etc out of the way by Advent.

GreyCloudsLooming · 26/10/2025 12:56

Tree and decs go up weekend before Christmas Day. We have an advent calendar, though, from 1st December and an advent candle.
Christmas lasts until Epiphany.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/10/2025 13:19

I agree OP. Mid fifties. My birthday is early November and there always used to be a clear gap between it and Christmas, now everything descends into christmas as soon as the last sparkler is out.

Christmas for us, starts just after Bonfire night and finishes around 6th Jan. Best time of the year!

Same in our house. It is my favourite time of year 🙂
