When does Christmas 'proper' start, in your opinion?

Just curious about this as I've noticed it's becoming more and more of a thing for people to say Christmas is over right after Boxing Day and to take their decs down round about that time too.

The reason I'm curious is just that it differs so much from how I remember Christmases as a child in the 1970s. I'm in my 50s and although there was always a build-up to Christmas it never used to start anywhere near as early. The adverts might have been pushing Christmas from about October or November, but in terms of decorations going up, Christmas music being played, etc - not so much until we got into December. I also feel like there was more of a distinction between Advent and Christmas itself back then (despite the plethora of advent calendars around today! 😄)

These days far more people seem to start saying 'it's Christmas' as soon as it gets to December, and consider it to be over and done with by Boxing Day. When I was a child it was advent until Christmas Eve, and then the Christmas period pretty much lasted until Jan 6th, encompassing New Year's as part and parcel of the season, with many/most people leaving their decs up till then. And to this day, the period from Christmas Eve onwards is my favourite bit, because all the stressy preps are over and it's time to just relax and enjoy the festive season. For this reason I'd never take my decs down before Twelfth Night, as old-fashioned as that probably makes me. 😅

None of this is being said in criticism of current traditions, btw - I know times change, and people should celebrate Christmas exactly however they want to, or not at all if that's their preference. I just find it an interesting phenomenon how the dates seem to have shifted so to speak, also curious to know if others around my age remember 'bygone' Christmases the same way I do. (Oh crikey, I said 'bygone', next step's a rocking chair I guess. 😅)

Thoughts?

1st December UNTIL first Monday of January!

I take down decorations around the day that kids restart school and put decorations up first weekend in December.

Have you noticed the insane recent social media trend of putting up a tree crazy early like October or November?

One of my Facebook friends has hers up already. 😲 No idea why!

We keep our decorations up til the 6th Jan, although some years we take the tree down a bit earlier if it starts dropping all its needles. I'd say Christmas is over though on NYE. Christmas really starts in our house when the whole family has finished work. In our house that's usually around 20th-23rd December.

Exactly this. When we're off to NY.

All this Christmas stuff in October is murdering the loveliness.

turkeyboots · 29/09/2024 19:15

Advent is the start, Christmas itself runs Christmas Eve to 12th night.
I hate Easter Eggs going on sale on Boxing Day.

NotInMyFacex1000 · 29/09/2024 19:16

It starts early December after DC birthday. When I went into labour with him there were no decorations on the ward. When I came back up with him it was all decorated with lights and tinsel. I love Christmas, I can't wait.

BusySittingDown · 29/09/2024 19:19

1st December, when the decorations start to go up, although I'm already starting to feel excited!

I usually take the decorations down around the 1st or 2nd January because I like to do it before I go back to work, otherwise I can't be arsed.

I love Christmas, love this time of year! January and February suck!

cookiedough174 · 29/09/2024 19:19

For me Christmas is very much the build up to it. My birthday is the end of November and after that I get excited for Xmas!
I love the Christmas events like Christmas light switch on, Christmas party at work, Christmas movies on tv, watching the Christmas nativities at school etc which is all done throughout December!
I have a small family so after Xmas day we don't have alot going on or families houses to visit etc. I'm normally full, skint and a bit down. Last year I took my tree down on the 28th I think?
It's interesting how the Xmas celebrations were traditionally post Christmas Day a generation ago, and they have shifted more to before Xmas day now!

DoYouReally · 29/09/2024 19:20

The pre Christmas build up - December 1st onwards.

Actually Christmas- when I finish work to when I return to work.

RabbitsRock · 29/09/2024 19:22

Beginning of December - we buy a real tree & always decorate it on my birthday. Usually take the decorations down on 12th Night or a few days before if we’re getting a bit fed up.My job is in retail so Christmas starts in August at work!

ByMerryKoala · 29/09/2024 19:23

Dec 1st to coincide with all the kids stuff going on at school from therein. Ideally, I'd prefer it to start later - about the 14th-ish because I think it drags at the end.

Lansonmaid · 29/09/2024 19:23

Christmas proper for me starts when our church choir come out of the vestry on Christmas Eve and our head soprano sings the first verse of Once in Royal David's city solo. We all join in as we process and it's a lovely service.
Our room decorations go up 1st Sunday in Advent and the tree mid December. They don't come down until 6th Jan and the nativity scene comes down after the festival of the Presentation of Christ in the temple. The last few years we've kept the room lights up through the winter though. Got to have something to lighten the winter gloom!

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/09/2024 19:24

Christmas Eve - Boxing Day.

onlyconnect · 29/09/2024 19:25

ruethewhirl I'm in my 50s too and agree with you that Christmas seems to start earlier and finish earlier than it used to.
For me e now I want yo to go on until 2 nd Jan but I find the mood is it's over around 28th Dec

DiscoBeat · 29/09/2024 19:26

We always have a real tree but other decorations start creeping in bit by bit early December. We usually put the tree up around 10th December and take it all down early January, after NYE. I don't get doing it on Boxing Day. I'm so busy at Christmas and Boxing Day is a day of relaxation, food is simple and we enjoy games with the family so I would hate to be busy tidying away all the decorations!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 29/09/2024 19:28

I like to get my tree up the first weekend of December, but I would say we don't really start to throw ourselves into it until midway through Dec as our lives are just soooo busy!

That said, my turkey is already ordered and I bought xmas chocolates today.

pantomanto · 29/09/2024 19:28

1st December to 27th December. Can’t stand new year.

Cobblersorchard · 29/09/2024 19:29

1 Dec until 12th night.

Daffyyellow · 29/09/2024 19:30

My Christmas splits into 2 parts, the prep season and the celebration season, working in a school it’s full on prep as soon as we go back after half term. It builds to the Nativity in early December and then all of the end of Christmas term events. At home, the tree is bought in early December, put up at the end of term, the real Christmas but starts, usually on 23rd, when all the food shopping is complete and the door can be shut, worries abate and celebrations begin. Tree down in early Jan and Christmas leaves the building before term starts.

I’m already thinking about the Nativity and costumes . . .

SpyOfHut6 · 29/09/2024 19:31

The first Sunday of advent for me, this year its 1st December. End date is a bit moveable as we always try to go away before the kids go back to school so it could be anywhere from the 3rd Jan.

CuteCillian · 29/09/2024 19:42

I am close to your age but for me, Christmas build up begins when Advent does. That is when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And why celebrate Christmas unless you are a Christian? Otherwise surely it is just a holiday to enjoy and doesn't need much preparation.

The Advent season varies, and the start date can change every year. It starts on the fourth Sunday before the 25th and that can fall between November 27 and December 3.

I wouldn't put up decorations at home until mid-December. Food collection slot is booked, advent calendar's ordered and I'm always keeping my eye out for advance present buying, but the Christmas season begins with Advent Sunday.

ShowOfHands · 29/09/2024 19:56

And why celebrate Christmas unless you are a Christian?

Because Christmas is as much cultural as it is Christian. Probably moreso now I'm afraid. Christians hijacked an ancient festival and lots of us take part in festivities that honour that rather than a birthday which didn't actually take place in December.

HoppityBun · 29/09/2024 20:02

The first day of Christmas is Christmas Day. In medieval times they had the octave of Christmas and did it all again the following week. Plough Monday was / is the first Monday after 6 January (Epiphany) when they all went back to work. Everyone now thinks you’re barking mad to wish them a happy Christmas after 25 December. But realistically, times change and 1 January marks the end

Cynic17 · 29/09/2024 20:03

24th December (although, strictly, 25th is the first day).
Up until then it's Advent, so should be no decorations etc.

TheDogsMother · 29/09/2024 20:06

Mid December soonest then decs down again on the 12th night.

EmeraldDreams73 · 29/09/2024 20:07

I try to get as prepared for Christmas as I can before December to spread the cost of presents. Then try to enjoy the more festive bits during December. I've always resisted putting our tree etc up until around mid Dec, but it all stays up till Jan 6th - I want it to stay feeling festive for at least a week of the most hideous month of all!
