Why are they so impossible to buy for?

DH and I have shared notes on our iCloud that we add things we want onto, but I also want to get something that I’ve actually thought of myself as IMO that’s nice (when you get it right). And DH’s list consists of things like:
a miniature model of Noel Gallagher’s guitar,
some ‘old books’ (😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️),
a pool table or arcade game (we don’t have the space),
‘a non-cringey red wine decanter’ (don’t even know what a cringey decanter would be in order to avoid it, and he doesn’t often drink red wine).
One year 3 different people got him a harmonica, because he’s impossible to buy for and I guess that’s a default present? So odd 😄
He wants some Inside Number 9 scripts which I can do as he already has some of them. But again, they will just sit there collecting dust. It’s just stuff.
He did a bit of golf over the summer, and wants to take the kids more, but I don’t know whether to encourage that as I barely see him as it is, dread to think if he takes up golf!
Loves travel, has a guitar he should play more, loves any sport and just wants merch (signed things, tops, models, hockey pucks) but again it’s just stuff to put on a shelf?? Maybe I should just do it if that’s what he wants. But am fatigued after 16 years of this conundrum 😅

My dad - god knows. 65ish, a very lively and happy guy but doesn’t do a whole lot. Likes discussions, politics, plays guitar very well, likes his grandchildren, funny happy guy. I always just panic buy him some whiskey or a shirt, no idea if he drinks the whiskey but my mum says he likes it. Just so uninspiring!

Also on that note - mum present ideas? She always asks for No 7 Protect and Perfect 😐

There are lots of Dartington decanters on Ebay - they are plain and elegant.

Flourshiba · 27/09/2024 14:02

Not sexy or glam 😃 but my (hard to buy for) DH loved his fur lined crocs.

He doesn't have to swap to shoes when he has to nip out to the car, or take the bins out. Anything that requires less effort is a win for him!

MiddleAgedDread · 27/09/2024 15:03

maybe by non-cringey he means something more modern rather than cut glass like your granny had? e.g. Le Creuset Vitesse 750ml Glass Decanter, Aerator and Cleaning Balls Set (johnlewis.com)

Ha DH loves both crocs (steals mine) and slippers so that’s actually perfect.

That's lovely @MiddleAgedDread . Wish we didn't have a decent one already as that would have been perfect for my DH

There's a shop in York that has modejs of famous people's guitars They are called Take One Gifts, but it doesn't seem like they have a website.

Is there a recording studio near you? Book some hours there? Gig tickets - combine with city break?

Do you have any more info on the guide to flying a WWII plane? A visit to the heritage hanger a Biggin Hill to see the restoration of the spitfires there is going to be my gift to DH this Christmas so that works better a nice addition.

I got it from the RAF museum, I think it was for a Sopworth Camel.

This might be what you want, a Spitfire pocket manual, it apparently has pilots note, tactical papers etc.

I have a reputation in my family for getting good presents for people, I wish I could turn it in to a business.

I want to get my son a work bag - he's 22 and I am looking for something that is an upgrade from what was his uni backpack but isn't aimed at 40+ Yr olds. I have looked on fossil (very expensive), can't see anything on next...any ideas?

What type of work. If he is a plumber he doesn't want a smart leather bag, he might if he works in an office.

@Runningupthecurtains Can I come along?

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 28/09/2024 09:14

@sash - he's going into teaching - something simple and a bit smarter than his sports bag (that he's unlikely to buy himself).

Terfified · 28/09/2024 09:16

We don't really do presents as we buy ourselves (within reason) what we want but I always give him a box of good chocolates as he loves chocolate.

What about this. I was a teacher he needs room for folders and probably a lap top.

Also get him a reusable Aldi / Lidl carrier bag for carrying exercise books.

I said I was good at this.

Londonmummy66 · 28/09/2024 14:23

@redwinechocolateandsnacks - the "in" back pack amongst 20 somethings and their friends are the Rains ones - quite pricey but you can usuall pick a new one up on ebay for about £50

They really are waterproof though - DD got caught in the torrential rain this week and her music scores and ipad were all fine.

That would be for me (I’m a singing teacher 🤣) ❤️

Temptation gifts have Harry Potter bits.
I discovered them from these Christmas threads a few years back, they have all sorts on there.

Sorry wrong thread meant to post that on the countdown Christmas one!

Ocean59 · 29/09/2024 11:58

@ButterAsADip if your dad like politics, may e subscription to Private Eye orThe Economist. Very different magazinwsbut one may be of interest?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/09/2024 12:28

I got DB an All Saints plain black t shirt (approximately £30) and a Star Wars Baba Fett keyring (approximately £2-£3 off eBay) for his birthday which was well received. Other things that go down well were Alessi anything, he likes stuff like eg sandwich toaster and hair gel/putty and moisturiser (usually Kiehls).

Last year I got him novelty Christmas socks with either a reindeer or Elf costume outfit on it.

I had to google shower steamers as I’d never heard of them.
