Wrapping Paper

What theme or colour scheme are you going for this year?

Or do you have plenty left over from last year and not need to buy any?

I have decided to go for a mismatch of colours/styles this year. I think I’ve been a bit too try hard in other years so want to just go fun this year.

I have seen some nice ones on Matalan, Next and John Lewis but not gonna get any yet until all the shops have it out in case I seen some I prefer 😀

We always get ours in Costco , it’s excellent quality .

Twinkletwinklelil · 02/09/2024 18:38

Usually like doing brown parcel paper with assorted ribbons. Probably do the same this year

gardenmusic · 02/09/2024 18:39

I have some white craft paper left from last year (it tears easily) so I will use this. I have a big bag of ribbons, all colours - I did dark green tartan last year, and I think I might do the same again. I usually tuck something fresh or dried into the bow - tiny cones and holly leaves - depends what the garden disgorges!
I am not very dexterous, so gifts go into boxes first - just boxes that I have collected all year - it's easier! (my sister was quite surprised to recieve her earings in a Bisto tub)
I bought some brown wrapping paper with reindeers on for 10p a roll in January, so that will last a while, and I also bought some paper with tiny dark green holly all over it - again, about 20p a roll. The patterned ones can go 'out'.
Sorry, quite an essay - I am sort of planning as I write.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/09/2024 18:41

I'm going plain brown wrappings.

I bought loads of brown parcel paper - it's perfect for birthday, Christmas, leaving gifts, wedding... I got tired of having to have various themed paper as I don't have a lot of storage room. Brown paper, tied with nice ribbon and a hand-made label looks lovely and it's recycleable.

RabbitsRock · 02/09/2024 18:44

I have quite a lot left as I bought some in the January sales. Quite fancy the brown paper & ribbons look too

MoggyP · 02/09/2024 18:56

I would always use up the paper I'd got first (both unused from previous years, and all the pieces kept for reuse). So never any theme unless eclectic counts.

If I run out, then I'd get a roll or two (ideally recycled and recyclable) from the Christmas card pop up shops that give a good proportion to good causes. I try to get generic designs (like stars, spots or stripes) so it can be used other than at Christmas. Or wrap in a tea towel (if I think the recipient would like a tea towel as an extra)

And now the DC are older, Father Christmas no longer wraps for stockings at all

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 02/09/2024 18:58

I'm really into nutcrackers this year so would love to find some decent nutcracker wrapping paper!

Other than that, I'm giving plain, matt, navy wrap and shiny, plain, copper wrap a go, I think the contrast will look nice under the tree🌲

NoCheesesForUsMeeces · 02/09/2024 19:52

I'm a long standing fan of mismatched, vintage-style wrapping paper and I try and mix this with being environmentally friendly (so recycled and recyclable).

From last year I have plain brown, red and white candy strip kraft paper, brown kraft paper with reindeer, brown paper with holly. I'm hoping that will see me through but if not, I'll definitely be getting something more childish (I had Santa and nutcracker paper last year but used it all).

AntigoneFunn · 02/09/2024 20:02

I really miss the wrapping paper you used to be able to get in Church street Market (and no doubt elsewhere!) in the 1970s and early '80s which was so thin it was almost translucent, but always covered with really jolly vintage looking designs, like no-one had bothered to change the pictures since the 50s. You used to get 10 sheets for a quid.

I've got a bag full of paper that I'll try and use up first, but as we've said no presents this year I'm not sure when it will end up being used. I have a massive roll of brown paper that I use for everything else, on the basis of it being recyclable. I save ribbons and have rolls and rolls of raffia/string/butchers twine etc. I make my own tags (I have a tag punch, so make a load every year from Christmas cards, and like a PP, use bits of holly and yew from the garden to jazz it up a bit.

shellyleppard · 02/09/2024 20:04

I get mine from a website called bargania. Its very good paper and a lovely pattern

OwlsDance · 02/09/2024 20:22

Hardly buy wrapping paper anymore. Getting Santa sacks for kids was the best decision ever, and for a few presents that need wrapping I mostly reuse wrapping paper from last years.

Fontainebleau007 · 02/09/2024 21:10

I have a bunch of wrapping paper from previous years so will try and use that up first but I love buying wrapping paper! Lol
I love pretty, holographic and sparkly paper and for kids I tend to get cheap 99p stuff probably from the card factory or something.

longdistanceclaraclara · 02/09/2024 21:14

I do brown paper with decorations that can all be recycled.

FinallyHere · 02/09/2024 21:36

Wrapping presents is one of my favourite parts of Christmas.

We don't have many actual presents, as family members all receive transfers into their accounts (adults) and to their savings accounts for children, so it's only a few token presents these days.

Always suffer a pang in the dates close to the festival when we meet up with friends and family to exchange gifts, give away beautifully wrapped gifts in my colour scheme which look beautiful under our tree for a heap of random, multi coloured chaos.

There is a special place in my heart for those who notice 'my' colour scheme and return the favour which totally changes my relationship with them.

lollyPaloozah · 02/09/2024 21:48

I love mis-matched it’s so fun! Can’t stand overly coordinated beige dullness when it comes to Christmas wrapping!

last year I actually got my favourite wrapping paper from primark of all places! It was brown paper, with vintage style Father Christmas faces on (sounds horrible but I loved it!) and then I also had some brown paper with green printed Christmas trees, and another bright coloured paper with candy canes (think both were b&m) and then I had emerald green velvet ribbon, red velvet ribbon, and tartan ribbon. (I re-use the ribbons each year)

AutumnJoys · 03/09/2024 09:26

I have a ginormous roll from Costco (double sided) that will be used again this year for the DC.

For other people I wrap in brown paper with ribbons. All colours.

I don't keep presents under the tree because of the dogs so I don't need to go for a tied in colour scheme.

housethatbuiltme · 03/09/2024 13:02

Don't know, I haven't bought any yet... its usually just whatever I find but each person has different one.

For DD I might use the remaining unicorns one I got years ago as it was a massive 15 meter roll that I got for like £2 or £3 in a summer sale but theres like 3/4th left and I'm sick of tripping over it.

It says 'merry christmas' on it too so I can't even use it for the endless birthday parties the kids get invited too either.

EternallyDelighted · 03/09/2024 13:11

We've never done colour schemes, it's all about the random chaos here (tree as well as gift wrap). We mainly re-use dozens of gift bags acquired over the years and kept in the loft. But for smaller things I bulk buy candy striped paper bags (red and white or gold and white) in various sizes from Amazon and then they can be used without sellotape for the most part, and re-used/recycled. And it's a nod to a colour scheme.

SnowJamz · 03/09/2024 13:14

Enjoying reading through the replies 😃

Brown/kraft paper seems a poplar choice.

I think I am going to make more effort with bows and ribbon this year. I’m not very good at it but going to look online for some videos to get some tips.

I miss Paperchase - loved their wrapping paper, especially the vintage style ones.

I’ve just done plain brown paper for the past few years and used fancy twine/ribbons/tags/decorative pieces etc to personalise things. I think it’s much nicer!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/09/2024 14:08

Also with the plain brown paper you can write on it in big letters if you need to. Any instructions like 'watch out for small bits' or 'keep in the fridge' or even the recipients names so you don't need labels.

mondaytosunday · 03/09/2024 14:21

I have enough wrapping paper to stock a shop! I mean seriously- at least two dozen rolls of paper. Plus I reuse paper I'm fond of, and always reuse bows. In fact it's a standing joke in my family! Still, if I saw a beautiful one this year...
I think this year will be trad. I sometimes do just red and white or last year it was retro and I got used paper packs off eBay. But I'm not superstrict with the presents.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 03/09/2024 14:53

@loropianalover 😍😍😍 as soon as I'm finished doing the gardening, I'm going to have a better look at it and get the tape measure out so I can visualise the sizes but that's exactly the style I love! Thank you!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/09/2024 19:32

Cash transfer for DS , he likes money not "things" so no wrapping . I used to give him a card that said look in your Bank Account but now he'll switch his phone on before he'd open a present !

I have Gift Bags for their Dec 1st Box, his is about a decade old , hers is a Tesco bag-for-life with The Snowman on it (also years old) it's a noce Tradition to get the bags off the top of the wardribe .

For DD (who does like presents ) some Cat-In-A-Christmas-Hat paper , I bought black cat wrapping paper for her Birthday which was lovely .

Costco paper is brilliant quality , we used to get the 4 rolls and used two each for DD/DS so they had their own paper

We don;t have a tree (since getting our cats ) so the presents go in a neat pile in their rooms for when they wakes up (usually mid morning ) I do miss the 5am opening of stockings and hearing them chatter !
