Are these worth it?

I was thinking of buying a couple for my DD who will almost be five at Christmas.

can you let me know the age of your child if they do play with them? She also had a younger sibling who we can hand them down to, but the younger one is a little bit too young for them at the moment.

thanks

Maybe your children are different to mine, but my experience is these are the types of toys that adults like and want their child to like, but children are actually not very interested in.

I agree with this to be honest. If she's interested in imaginative role play which is essentially what these mice are used for then why not get her some Sylvanian families, they're cheaper and likely to inspire much more imaginative play.

Calliopespa · 09/08/2024 20:08

My friend’s little girl (7) is obsessed with these but she does have quite a lot of the accessories ( little skis and picnic sets etc) which I think does enhance the play appeal. Could you try a couple and if they don’t get played with much they are still lovely as decorative items in her room?

ditalini · 09/08/2024 20:15

I would have gone nuts for these when I was a child because I'm a sucker for tiny things. Aged about 10 I actually made matchboxes and tiny creatures out of felt to live in them.

However, I'd also have gone even more nuts for a Playmobil campervan with a family and about a hundred tiny accessories which you could get for a couple of those mice.

Mummyindublin · 09/08/2024 20:41

My 2 yr old has just one, in a little bed in a box and ADORES it... It was a gift last Christmas and still a favourite toy.

Muteswan · 09/08/2024 21:02

Ooh I really disagree with the comments on this thread - my DD got a Maileg mouse in a tutu in a matchbox bed in her stocking when she was 2y1m and it still gets played with every day now she's nearly 4. It was her best gift that Xmas. Still in excellent condition so definitely worth it here, and she much prefers it to Sylvanians/Playmobil. Imaginative small world play is her thing though so I knew she'd like it.

InsomniacsUnite · 09/08/2024 21:40

My DD has loads of mice. She started collecting them about age 6 or 7 and has loads now, including accessories. Doesn’t play
with them so much now (she is almost 11) but they have been worth it for us

Alifemoreordinary123 · 09/08/2024 21:58

We bought our DD one when she was about 3. It was never her favourite though she did play with it here and there. They are a beautiful toy.

Chaosx3x · 09/08/2024 22:07

They are gorgeous but almost prohibitively expensive unless you’re literally going to buy just one or two in which case the scope for play is quite limited. A friend of mine set her daughter up with a whole “mouse house” with about 10-12 mice and a lot of accessories etc. even with buying second hand, using an ikea house rather than the official Maileg one, etc, she estimated she spent over £250 😮

Chaosx3x · 09/08/2024 22:07

Agree silvanians are a better option, more variety and much easier to buy second hand

I’d never heard of these (56, no children), so just Googled them and now I want one. How delightful.❤️

Me too, but I know my 4yo would probably say, "Oh a mouse, thank you," and then move on to something gaudy and brightly coloured.

Thank you so much! Very much a mix of responses which cover all of my thoughts! 😂 ie an expensive toy which is really only for the parents, or that they actually get played with.

I actually have a tooth fairy one put away for each of them, but not at that stage yet! I’ll maybe see if we have a local stockist that I can take her by to see if they attract her attention. She’ll probably want a neon squishmallow or beanie boo instead 😂

My daughter loves hers, she's four and got her first one at about two. They are adorable (currently have really good resale value). We now have eight of them bought for birthdays, Christmases and other events. We don't have any of the accessories though I am tempted to get the castle to display them in.

User170451 · 16/08/2024 00:23

My daughter loves hers! It’s her most
Played with thing and has been for 2 years! I bought a few bits when she was 2 and add a few more any Christmas or birthdays. They are expensive but have been worth it for us and they do hold their value for re sale

I think it depends on the child.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 16/08/2024 10:36

They are lovely, but the accessories are crazy prices. I see there's a Maileg Mice advent calendar. A snip at just five hundred quid!

My experience of Beanie Boos is that they are highly addictive and my daughter has 20 something of them now!

I actually bought a range of very similar mice from TK Max/ The Range/ local gift shop that are designed to be hung on a Christmas tree, I just chopped the ribbon off (that should attach them to the tree). I'm on holiday at the moment but I can take photos when I return.

I’m sure they are great Methenyou; but it still made me laugh. Reminds me of when my friend’s mum was aghast at the cost of a designer t shirt my friend wanted and said ( half seriously!): I’ll just buy you a plain one from Primark and you can can write “xbrand” across the front with my labelling pen.” 🤣

HappyDane · 21/08/2024 22:58

Reminds me of a certain lovely thread in Classics; one of my feel-good faves.

The lost little Maileg mouse whose name was Matilda, if I'm not mistaken...

Searched but couldn't find.

@Mamawanna I think some children adore them, others not so much.
