Wreath for front door

I am very excited because we are buying a beautiful oak front door from a reclamation place. It's going to be so gorgeous and we have lived with an ugly white UPVC thing for 4 years.
I would love to have a Christmas wreath this year, (I might even make it myself) but I don't want to put fixings on the front of my pristine new door, what are the options for fixing something on the inside that goes up and over the top?
Do any of them work well?

I have a nail on the back of the door and the ribbon goes all the way up and over

Embrace it or go away.

The ribbon is a good idea, I never thought of that.
Will it be heavy enough to not sway about in the wind?

don3gal · 01/06/2024 10:07

You could use an over the door wreath hanger

CJ0374 · 01/06/2024 10:14

My mum also has a small nail on the inside of the door with a ribbon hanging over to the outside. We too have a new oak door and I'd worry that the metal door hanger might scratch or damage the wood. Worth a try though.

I have heard of these over the door wreath hangers. I won't be having a wreath, but hypothetically my door fits quite snugly - I don't think I'd be able to close the door - am I being dense, here?

Thinking perhaps pad the back of the wreath, too?

Try a command hook.

Thingsthatgo · 01/06/2024 11:51

Amazing! Thanks all. It's very snug to the frame, so I am not sure if an over the door metal hook would fit, but a ribbon would be ok. Maybe with a command strip to hold it in place, otherwise it might swing around as I open the door.

I have a command strip on the back of my door. Over the years it has held very heavy wreaths.

Pollipops1 · 01/06/2024 11:56

Over the door thing doesn’t fit mine, I have a ribbon and a command strip on the back of my door.

No - unless your door is badly fitting, they're no use at all.

neonjumper · 01/06/2024 11:59

I have 2 wreaths attached to each other with ribbon . The ribbon goes over the door so I have an indoor wreath as well !

gardenmusic · 01/06/2024 12:00

Lily193, Thanks. I was justwondering .
Anything I hang on my north facing door will be off to Calais in the first high wind!

That sound beautiful.

motherofawhirlwind · 01/06/2024 12:03

If you have a peep hole, you can unscrew it and use that for a tether Smile

gardenmusic · 01/06/2024 12:05

Are you all making your wreaths?
Nosy and envious...

crackfoxy · 01/06/2024 12:07

Command hook inside then a ribbon over the door I line the back of the wreath with an old cloth incase it scratches the door in the wind

TheBucktoothedGirlFromLuxembourg · 01/06/2024 12:12

@gardenmusic do you have any National Trust places near you? They often run wreath making courses. I've just checked the website and couldn't find any listed yet but it's probably worth checking periodically. Not cheap, but the two I've done have been well run and a lovely festive occasion.

Alternatively you can buy a "wreath in a box" kit from Etsy or there are YouTube videos if you buy/forage all the gubbins independently.

We hang ours on the door knocker, the over door hangers dinted our wooden door

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 01/06/2024 12:15

The over the door hanger thing only cost about £6 and is the neatest solution so I got one on the basis that I wouldn't be wasting too much money if it didn't work. I thought that our door was a snug fit but it still works.
We replaced our white PVC door a couple of yeses ago and I still smile when I get home

whataboutnow · 01/06/2024 12:16

I tie mine to the door knocker with ribbon
