Does anyone else enjoy pottering around doing normal chores on Christmas Day?

I do, I find the enforced festivities draining.... I much prefer pottering around, putting in washes. Making sure the house duties just rumble on as normal. Light the fire and candles, create coziness for the kids, and then just trundle through the day in the background, as normal.

I find that less pressurising than forced joviality or movie style eggnog with the neighbiurs/random family members.

Cozy and quiet here. (practical tasks being completed, secretly getting on with life as usual).

I cleaned out a few plug holes this morning with my plug hole cleaner, before the rest of the family got up. It was my favourite part of the day so far.

Cardiganwearer · 25/12/2023 14:15

Yeah me too. I put a wash on. I find the everyday stuff very grounding.

YoongiMarryMe · 25/12/2023 14:17

My DH has just started some ironing so he clearly feels the same Grin
I'm thinking a nap might be nice 😴

crochetmonkey74 · 25/12/2023 14:18

Me! My mum did too. I actually enjoy all the kitchen based stuff like clearing up, organising etc so it annoys me when people want to wash up as it's my quiet time

Lilibert456 · 25/12/2023 14:19

Washing machine going. Will be doing at least a couple of loads today.

theduchessofspork · 25/12/2023 14:19

I just do all that in the days before because we have a lot of people here (which I enjoy) but if we didn’t, I’d just want to chill. Nothing wrong with it though

Ibex22 · 25/12/2023 14:22

Aside from a dog walk, no. I cannot think of anything worse than chores on today of all days!

MuchTooTired · 25/12/2023 14:24

Normally for me it’s a no to chores, but for the first time on Christmas Day I’ve had a lovely time hoovering upstairs, tidying and cleaning the bathroom in peace whilst everyone else is engrossed in something else. It’s been great!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/12/2023 14:26

I have done some bleaching of sinks etc, hoovered, sanded some poly filled bits prior to painting, done some laundry and cleaned a polycarbonate roof. In between have each be cheese, plum loaf and drunk tea.

FastandLoose · 25/12/2023 14:26

Nope. Sounds tedious but each to their own.

I find it all very grounding too, even meditative.

DelightfulDoris · 25/12/2023 14:28

I’m not sure I do any normal chores. Obviously OH has spent a while crushing down the recycling bin to squeeze in some more rubbish!

Clearing up after lunch and the usual. But not cleaning bathrooms etc.
I certainly don’t trundle along in the background. We don’t have forced joviality though, we are lucky to have a really lovely day with my parents coming over later. It’s a very chilled out day. I’m currently laying on the sofa while kids are doing some dinosaur archeological dig thing!

greenbeansnspinach · 25/12/2023 14:30

I’ve been doing washing, drying, emptying cat litter tray as usual. Turning over the compost. Might do a little light hoovering later. Apparently Call The Midwife is on.

Kwasi · 25/12/2023 14:31

I definitely prefer it to the forced festivities.

DelightfulDoris · 25/12/2023 14:33

It’s not forced festivities here. I feel really sad that people don’t enjoy the day.

I do have to take myself off for a few minutes away from everyone but that’s totally normal on any day off work where we are altogether!

OldTinHat · 25/12/2023 14:34

I live alone and discovered, this morning, that I'd run out of plates and cutlery. Meant I had to put on the dishwasher.

I hate, HATE emptying the dishwasher!!

So nope, you're on your own as far as I'm concerned OP (and other PPs!).

EarringsandLipstick · 25/12/2023 14:36

My people!

I did some ironing before DC were up, just changed my sheets.

I rarely get a day in the house with no obligations / events so this is lovely for me. And I'm a bad relaxer. I will sit down later but now I like pottering around.

Olika · 25/12/2023 15:03

We run two rounds of laundry this morning and I was cooking non-Xmas food for my DD as she hasn't eaten that well for the last two days. My DSis went to town with her mates as she got bored. TBH I just want to sleep as I have a flu, my DD got it from me two days ago and now my dad has it too.

TheAverageJoanne · 26/12/2023 23:26

No! No chores from 24-26 December here, not of course counting washing up and cooking and vacuuming every day. Though I'll do laundry tomorrow.

Cwtshcwtsh · 26/12/2023 23:28

Yes! Completely. Have been pottering this evening and am grateful for return to normality.

Exactly this. I used to rent a room in the house of a yoga teacher and we agreed that tidying the house was a form of meditation.

No need to feel sad - we're all wired differently and enjoy different things. I've never liked days/events where there is a strong expectation to be happy or feel a particular way.

Breakfast with my partner who went to his elderly mum's for lunch - I had a fabulous time pottering but lots done - house was silent - bliss. The best day at home I've had in weeks - thoroughly enjoyed it. Very relaxed when daughter returned home early afternoon.

ZiggyZowie · 27/12/2023 00:15

Yes !

Emptied the recycling bins, main bin.

Put dishwasher on, picked turkey and popped into Tupperware box in fridge.

Tidied the fridge a bit , cleaned the kitchen sink

hiredandsqueak · 27/12/2023 11:49

Yes I find the biggest bonus of being chief cook and bottle washer is that I can hide out in the kitchen away from the "fun". I go as far as to ban them from the kitchen so as to not be under my feet to ensure I am undisturbed.
