£20 for pissing gravy?!?!

FusionChefGeoff · 18/12/2023 16:38

I want to buy my gravy, my trusty Good Food mag voted Waitrose as the best this year but it's £5 for 400g and we usually get through at least 3 pots plus 1 for leftovers (12 of us)

That's £20 on gravy!!!

M&S is no better - £4.25 a pot.

Can anyone else recommend a cheaper but still delicious option? I had the Aldi one a couple of years ago and it wasn't good but obvs they may have changed recipe.

And before I get 100 replies telling me how easy it is to make; I cook my turkey in a steam oven so can't make gravy as don't get traditional pan juices

I love bisto best lamb gravy granules. It doesn't have the nasty metallic weird taste you get with gravy granules, it actually tastes freshly made. And all you need is a jug and a kettle.

NotARealWookiie · 18/12/2023 16:44

If you want to make it go further but don’t want to make your own, you could get a tub of gravy and some turkey bisto granules. Make up the bisto with some chicken stock and mix with your gravy. It’s still instant but a middle ground.

FusionChefGeoff · 18/12/2023 16:44

Wouldn't that taste odd with turkey though?

Look at Jamie Oliver. I’m sure for £5/10 you could adapt his recipe using chicken wings with veg ie cook it on a hob instead .

flipent · 18/12/2023 16:45

This is about 58 servings for £4 ish.

Sorry, picture has formatted strangely so you have to open to see!

Yeah, just do this. With veg water, a spoonful of jam for sweetness, seasoning.

I'm doing Jamie O's Get Ahead gravy with some random bits of chicken from the freezer. (& Skipping the sherry, star anise and cranberry!). Nicer and cheaper than fresh shop bought but just as easy on the day (granted needs some time in advance though!).

gotomomo · 18/12/2023 16:48

Turkey gravy granules, then add any juices you do get, personally I actually prefer beef gravy (with everything) but the turkey one is preferred by others

Azandme · 18/12/2023 16:52

Buy a decent stock, or buy a bag of chicken wings and roast them.

BigBouncyBaubles · 18/12/2023 16:52

I was imagining some niche OnlyFans section where people paid £20 to watch someone appear to piss gravy.

RoseDog · 18/12/2023 16:53

I prefer Asda extra special turkey gravy granules to the bisto one only a couple of pound for the tub!

HermioneWeasley · 18/12/2023 16:56

Morrisons fresh Turkey gravy is good and is two pounds something

Same. I am really disappointed.

But, OP, I echo what PPs said about buying 2-3 of the Waitrose gravy and bulking out with bisto

ActDottie · 18/12/2023 17:25

You can make a vegetarian gravy really easily with corn flour and vegetable stock. So don’t need juices from the turkey. Or your cheapest and easiest option is probably gravy granules. Probably won’t taste as good but that’s what you’re paying the high price for with the pre made stuff.

Wineat5isfine · 18/12/2023 17:29

I buy a separate turkey leg, roast it on a trivet of veg and then put the whole thing in, with all of the veg into a slow cooker on Christmas eve to cook on slow overnight.

Strain it, thicken with a little Bisto or flour - tastes unbelievable.

User69371527 · 18/12/2023 17:35

^^ that sounds delish! And will cost you less than £20 plus make the house smell amazing!

User69371527 · 18/12/2023 17:36

I’ve also made and frozen Jamie Oliver’s make ahead one - no Turkey involved really (can add juices on the day but still tastes good without)

furtivetussling · 18/12/2023 17:49

Does no-one use the giblets to make gravy any more?

Movinghouseatlast · 18/12/2023 17:52

Use the giblets to make a stock, then reduce it a lot. You can add that to Jamie Olivers Get Ahead Gravy.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 18/12/2023 17:53

Make your own using the giblets and the meat juices!!!!

growingonmyass · 18/12/2023 17:56

Just make some in advance with a pack of chicken wings (loosely follow Jamie get ahead gravy but without the star anise and add some chicken stock cubes)

I've just made mine and it'll go in freezer.

We use the giblets as a trivet under the turkey.
Gravy is a mix of chicken & onion gravy granules & pan juices.
Jamie's Make Ahead Gravy is nice but a bit of faff.

FusionChefGeoff · 18/12/2023 21:16

Thanks all:

I cannot be arsed to buy wings / make ahead gravy. We have so much on plus work it's just not going to happen!

We have a turkey crown wrapped in bacon and cooked mainly in a steam oven - really doesn't give good juices to work with

However @Wineat5isfine might just have it!! I reckon I can be arsed with that

Or I'll do the hybrid fancy gravy plus granules option. I have been saving various pan juices / scrapings recently so have a little "flavour bomb" I can add to boost it up
