£20 for pissing gravy?!?!

I want to buy my gravy, my trusty Good Food mag voted Waitrose as the best this year but it's £5 for 400g and we usually get through at least 3 pots plus 1 for leftovers (12 of us)

That's £20 on gravy!!!

M&S is no better - £4.25 a pot.

Can anyone else recommend a cheaper but still delicious option? I had the Aldi one a couple of years ago and it wasn't good but obvs they may have changed recipe.

I’ve never heard of ‘pissing gravy’ - I take it you can’t find it in M&S.

Bisto do a turkey gravy.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 18/12/2023 21:37

Bloody hell l literally just use granules and add the meat juices - feel like l have been doing it wrong after reading this thread

Thanks all:

I cannot be arsed to buy wings / make ahead gravy. We have so much on plus work it's just not going to happen!

We have a turkey crown wrapped in bacon and cooked mainly in a steam oven - really doesn't give good juices to work with

However @Wineat5isfine might just have it!! I reckon I can be arsed with that

Or I'll do the hybrid fancy gravy plus granules option. I have been saving various pan juices / scrapings recently so have a little "flavour bomb" I can add to boost it up

Honestly. It’s so easy and by the time it comes to strain the gravy, the turkey leg just falls apart. Push everything tightly through a sieve and voila.

Its also great to walk into the kitchen Christmas morning and be hit with glorious turkey smells!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Giblets, 2 Carrots, 2 sticks celery, an onion, peppercorns, bayleaf, you could add a handful of chicken wings. Just simmer for 2/3 hours. Strain and put the stock in the fridge.

Bring to the boil add the boiling stock to a mug and add two chicken stock pots (knorr are good). Add a generous glass of white wine or a smaller one of sherry. Add pepper and salt to taste and two large teaspoons of cranberry sauce. Thicken with a little cornflour, add a skewer tip or two of gravy browning.

It's very little bother.

DM makes the best gravy with veg oil, flour, cabbage water, salt snd gravy browning. I don’t know her method but it’s delicious.

Oh and apologies to those who saw the kink angle in my thread title!!!

@Wineat5isfine sorry just re-read your method - there's presumably some liquid that goes into the slow cooker with the roasted leg and veg - chicken stock to cover it all??

Saw a pot of sudocrem online food shopping and it was £7.50.

£7.50!

I still can't get over it.

Uricon2 · 18/12/2023 22:27

Turkey Bisto granules with whatever juices and bits from the pan you can glean (the roasted leg sounds like a good idea to me) made up with stock and a good glug of port, tawny best, red wine at a pinch.

rwalker · 18/12/2023 22:41

It is a lot but for £20 why risk ruining your dinner if you can afford it or
cut back on something else
realistically even shitty gravy granules and a few bits will cost you £5

so really it £15 more for something you know you will be happy with

Do you have a pressure cooker? If so bung everything and anything in (veg, herbs, mustard, carcasses, fat, Parmesan rinds, literally whatever), pressure cook with water for two hours, add salt and sugar to taste, and a teaspoon or two of bisto to thicken (secret sauce). Basically free. £5 I’m sure is nice but not necessary!

Yes sorry! I usually put about 2 litres of hot water into the slow cooker as well. More / less depending on how much you want to make. And I do put a couple of chicken stock cubes on as well.

Sainsburys.
£2.75 with a nectar card. Doubt you will know the difference unless you are truly a gravy connoisseur!

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 19/12/2023 17:05

I normally steam my Turkey and do get ahead gravy.

im A real real fuss pot about gravy, it can make a roast dinner.

Mynewnameis · 19/12/2023 17:08

Nothing wrong with a bit of bisto (best - it's also gluten free) . I find the ready made gravy so salty

Belltentdreamer · 19/12/2023 17:09

Sainsbury’s taste the difference gravy on special for £2.75 atm
