Husband and I are planning what we’ll eat for dinner on Christmas Eve once we’ve done hot chocs & Santa & popped our daughter for bed?
It’s just us so don’t need to go mad but trying to think of something festive but not too ‘much’ given xmas day will be so full on!
would love to hear what you all have! (Aside from a brandy, mince pie & carrot of course!)

Chinese takeaway is our tradition

Tayegete · 17/12/2023 15:35

We always have Camembert and French bread.

WinterSparkles · 17/12/2023 15:36

Fish and chips normally

HairdryerMary · 17/12/2023 15:41

Beef wellington?

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 15:42

We have party food either at a party, hosting one or just family! M&S has a good selection

BooksAndHooks · 17/12/2023 15:42

We always get a pizza delivered. A tradition from our childhood where it was a big deal to get pizza and we only did it on Christmas Eve.

Pistolpunk · 17/12/2023 15:42

We are having a buffet

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 15:43

Don’t want to eat loads the night before of spend a lot of time prepping/cooking

SOxon · 17/12/2023 15:43

Fish pie, with plenty of scallops and steamed green veg, every year, the same,
no matter which one of us is hosting, always tasty, only one huge dish to wash up, never any leftovers.

Digestivechocolatebiscuit · 17/12/2023 15:46

Buffet ( or a picky tea). Quiche.. prawns in cocktail sauce... chicken satay skewers ... Samoa's ... salad .. Nice bread ... cheese etc.

lazysundaymorningcoffee · 17/12/2023 15:48

We always have a steak supper and a bottle of champagne.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/12/2023 16:01

Different every year. We have pretty much always either been hosting or staying with family on Christmas Eve. We've quite often had things like a game pie or casserole. This year we're hosting and dh is doing a 9 course tasting menu for 10 of us Shock. I'm a decent cook, but doing that would be my idea of a nightmare. He loves it though! He's cooking Christmas lunch too. I've never done it Blush

Saharafordessert · 17/12/2023 16:04

Sausage and mash every year!

PennyPinkPineapple · 17/12/2023 16:04

Home-made sausage rolls. I also get some other picky bits or M&S party food to go alongside.

Xmasbaby11 · 17/12/2023 16:07

Lamb tagine with couscous and veg. We had it last year and it worked well! I’ve bought the lamb tagine this year so it’ll be quick and easy!

NoTeaNoShade · 17/12/2023 16:08

We always have a bbq! Totally different food wise to everything leading up to Christmas Day, plus the side dish leftovers (potato salad, roasted veg etc) are rolled out for Boxing Day cold cuts, cheese etc. Bonus fun if it's raining (we have a gas bbq with a lid so nothing is ruined) 😀

henrysugar12 · 17/12/2023 16:08

Usually a Chinese!

Allmarbleslost · 17/12/2023 16:08

We go to friends every year and usually have M&S party food.

ScarletWitchM · 17/12/2023 16:09

Chinese takeaway for us - no cooking needed!

purplecorkheart · 17/12/2023 16:12

We tend to go out for a late lunch on Christmas Eve and had cold meat or toasted cheese sandwiches with fancier that usual ingredients. This year the food where we used to go is dire so will probably do something like a seafood lasagne or a chicken casserole.

Wolvesart · 17/12/2023 16:16

I usually steam a bream or seabass in the wok. The idea is we have something utterly different from the Christmas lunch fare. NB am aware that some readers here might be from parts of Europe where carp is the regular Christmas lunch. Have wondered if my ancestors from Eastern Europe might have partaken of fish at Christmas way back.

idontlikealdi · 17/12/2023 16:17

Peking duck

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 17/12/2023 16:17

Just standard food, nothing too heavy as we have more food the next day.

Some cultures do have their main meal on Christmas Eve though.

Haveallthesongsbeenwritten · 17/12/2023 16:22

we will have some blinis with salmon, cheeses, charcuterie etc. And tons of champagne!

SpringingJoy · 17/12/2023 16:22

A takeaway with the dc about 6pm.

Then for me and dh in the (very) late evening - whilst waiting for teens to sleep etc - we'll have pate, crackers, brie, posh crisps and nuts.
