Husband and I are planning what we’ll eat for dinner on Christmas Eve once we’ve done hot chocs & Santa & popped our daughter for bed?
It’s just us so don’t need to go mad but trying to think of something festive but not too ‘much’ given xmas day will be so full on!
would love to hear what you all have! (Aside from a brandy, mince pie & carrot of course!)

OP posts:

Delia Smith's Hot Smoked Salmon fish pie with steamed green vegetables.

mrsbyers · 17/12/2023 16:41

Steak and chips or ham and pickles

BiggerBoat1 · 17/12/2023 16:42

Takeaway curry. Always from the same place. My favourite bit of Christmas!

VisiblyNot25 · 17/12/2023 16:43

We always have a buffet/ party tea - it’s one of my fave Xmas traditions

Ham! Always ham! Cooked in the slow cooker the day before (in liquid) and then roasted in the oven for dinner on Christmas Even (going to do it in the air fryer this year). Served with potatoes of some sort (dauphinoise this year) and greens.

Then we've got cold ham ready to go with the turkey for all the 'leftover' meals which are the best bit of Christmas eating. And any leftover dauphinoise (will have to make extra to be sure of that) will pimp up the bubble and squeak nicely.

This year it will be grilled aubergine and warm taboulleh salad with a pomegranate dressing.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/12/2023 17:31

Lasagne and garlic bread here!

Seamist22 · 17/12/2023 18:25

Curry! (Not takeaway)

Whataretheodds · 17/12/2023 18:26

We enjoy salmon en croute. I save the cheese for after Christmas dinner and the rest of Christmas week!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 17/12/2023 18:29

Party food bunged in the oven

Runoutofinkagain · 17/12/2023 18:29

We have a cheesboard including a naked camembert and bread, crackers etc

ShitIforgothelves · 17/12/2023 18:31

Picky bits! A buffet I guess. We've always done that since we've had kids, now both teenagers.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 17/12/2023 18:31

If both (adult) kids are around with their partners, we bow down to our 70s roots and have a cheese fondue, with plenty of French bread.

Then we switch to another pot with a warm chocolate ganache, with marshmallows, strawberries, mini meringues etc.

Missingmyusername · 17/12/2023 18:33

Salad, breads, vegan sausage rolls, pate, cheese crackers, nuts, grapes and wine.

Ihateslugs · 17/12/2023 18:33

When our children were small, we always enjoyed a good quality steak with jacket potatoes, cooked by my husband. We then went to my parents for Christmas dinner so did not need to do any prepping.

Now I’m divorced and live alone, I have my sister from the US staying here most years and we’ve started a new tradition of going out to a pub for a late lunch on Christmas Eve then just have cheese and crackers for supper. We go to my other sisters on Christmas Day, so once again no prepping or cooking for me.

AdoraBell · 17/12/2023 18:33

No idea yet but last year I did a charcuterie and cheese board with salad and bread type stuff- bread sticks/crackerd/flat bread etc.

TravellingCross · 17/12/2023 18:33

We spend Xmas eve afternoon and early evening with friends so whoever’s turn it is to host does a buffet/party food.

BarryKentPoet · 17/12/2023 18:33

We buy a load of Chinese starters from the takeaway and have a ready-made buffet.

closingdownsale · 17/12/2023 15:30

Chinese takeaway is our tradition

Same for us!

itsgettingweird · 17/12/2023 18:35

I'll do pulled pork and part baked rolls (baked to eat obviously!) and also cheeses and veg sticks.

Just ds and I.

It's easy because then it all goes in the fridge to be picked at afterwards.

We are at my brothers Xmas day and have gammon for Boxing Day.

My ds is swim training every other day as usual so it'll be normal food for us as he needs the right diet (swims 10-12k) a day 😂🤪

I worked a few ski seasons in the alps.

This is the best dinner 😬

PolitelySilent · 17/12/2023 18:38

We usually do a buffet type meal (testing the sausage rolls is an important job!) but our eldest moved away earlier this year (*sob) and he’s back with his bf from Christmas Eve for a few days, so making his favourite chicken katsu.
Have also had takeaways in years past. Anything to keep things simple on Christmas Eve!

PumpkinSpiceSeason · 17/12/2023 18:42

Assorted Sainsburys or M&S party food. Bonus points for yellow stickers. It's become our tradition.

For Xmas day thinking duck legs with cherry sauce.

And some port, both days.

Hibernatalie · 17/12/2023 18:45

DH makes a jerk and rum ham (Jamie Oliver recipe) and we have that every year on Xmas eve with egg, chips and pineapple. The taste is just Christmas to me now.

MidgeFragnets · 17/12/2023 18:47

I've done fish pie and homemade sausage roll in the past, but not keen on that this year and want something that's more straightforward and a bit different.

We recently tried to replicate a lamb dish that was on the skills round in masterchef recently. Think it was lamb, babaganoush, toast and pomegranate sauce, so might do that with some salad this year.

No decent takeaways near by and they are so bloody expensive for what you get, so I'd rather cook myself.
