MIL is the HARDEST person ever to buy for. She doesn't really have any hobbies, doesn't like food presents (have given her a hamper of home made food and drink last year and no one has looked less impressed at anything...!) and has an incredibly minimalist house so doesn't like home gifts. She doesn't like going places she hasn't been so a restaurant/theatre voucher wouldn't be used.
Every Christmas or birthday she kills me! Anyway I have got her:

  • Fluffy slippers
  • Gel eye mask that can be kept in fridge or warmed
  • Small box of chocolates
  • Make up bag
Does this sound ok?

Why do you think that all women in that age group would like the same thing?!
I'm 61 and though I'd be grateful for any present, none of those would bring me real joy.

CurlewKate · 14/12/2023 19:49

I thought women over 50 were easy. Lavender water, a lap tray and a nice pastel coloured scarf. Oh, or a phone with big buttons.

snottymcsnotface · 14/12/2023 19:56

I'd just get her a gift card for wherever she buys her clothes from and put that in with a little box of chocolates.

😂

Incontinence pads-Tenalady etc
Maybe some posh tea as a treat?

adriftabroad · 14/12/2023 19:59

Jigsaw with large pieces?

l’d prefer a new pair of reading glasses in a jaunty colour and a nice gold chain to hang them round my neck. Or one of those big slippers to keep my feet warm while I’m watching Homes Under The Hammer with a cup of Horlicks and a Rich Tea. Now that I’m in my mid fifties and utterly ancient I don’t want anything too extravagant or exciting in case I let out a little bit of wee.

Mumumumumum555 · 14/12/2023 20:56

What about an experience rather than ‘stuff’? Afternoon tea maybe?

LJ125 · 14/12/2023 21:02

Sounds very tricky OP. I know a voucher for John Lewis or M&S might seem boring but might she like one of those? That way she can buy her own thing

CallmeSand · 14/12/2023 21:03

How about one of these? 😛

I bet most posters are 10years off max at being 50.

So funny.

adriftabroad · 14/12/2023 21:10

@SirChenjins I appreciate a dye, for my moustache. Menopause 😎

Menopace vitamins?
HUGE bucket knickers.

I would love this! So would teen DD.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/12/2023 21:14

A big magnifying glass. Would say Tena but someone beat me to it.
Special lotion for softening toe nails
Velcro-fastening wide slippers
Age-spot lightening lotion
Anti-ageing face cream for the over 50s

TheCrazyCatWoman · 14/12/2023 21:16

Every age group is disparate, I’m in mid-50s and like gym/running stuff; books; fancy skin care and gardening gear. I’ve been gifted more than enough slippers in my life but would accept any gift with a smile and thank you if given kindly.

I’m genuinely amazed at how ungrateful all you old ladies on here are. I pray for any of your own children or god forbid, grandchildren, buying you gifts which you will then dump off to charity shops or palm off to someone else.

Old ladies? We're in our 50s and in our prime.

Cpmlmb · 14/12/2023 21:33

The comments I’ve read are all about gifts.

How about time together? Having afternoon tea somewhere a bit posh? Or having a trip to somewhere nice, an overnight stay? family film night?

sings
what shall I give him poor as I am?
I will give my love.

MaryWhitehouseisCOOL · 14/12/2023 22:09

It's a boring present, a voucher is lovely

Ooh good idea - I could use the dye on my hairy chin chin too (also menopause) 🧔‍♀️

RADIOOFF · 14/12/2023 22:15

@Cpmlmb the OP’s budget is around £25.

Not sure that would cover tea for two at Fortnum’s, or a night at a country hotel …

HardcoreLadyType · 14/12/2023 23:25

GotMooMilk · 14/12/2023 17:58

@HardcoreLadyType that’s fine until you don’t like anything and don’t give anyone the slightest hint of what you want!

It wasn’t really a comment aimed at you, but more generally at people saying being upset with the wrong present is grabby. It may well not be.

You have tried hard to find something your MIL will like, and it seems she may well just be hard to please.

Charlize43 · 15/12/2023 00:53

I'm 57 and I do casual work for an events company (meet & greet, hostessing, etc) who this evening gave me a lovely bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 244. It was very well received! It will be enjoyed by my friends & myself and won't clutter up my house, or be something that will be carted off to a charity shop straight after Christmas. For me, this type of consumable present is perfect (I also enjoy receiving gourmet coffee beans, or my favourite perfume).

At 57, I already have fluffy slippers, have too many scarves and hardbacks, not really interested in toiletries or make up that I may not like, and loathe candle clutter and Baylis & Harding.

At a push a £25 M&S Voucher (which I can spend on a nice bottle of something) will suffice.

Froggygonefishing · 15/12/2023 01:56

If she likes tv, could you get her a streaming service she might like?

Rightsraptor · 15/12/2023 06:46

It's such a nightmare buying for difficult people.

OP already knows the gifts she's chosen are on the boring & predictable side - but how else could it be? She could get something outrageous, like a voucher for a skydiving lesson, but it'd never be used & OP knows that. At least there's a chance the gifts she's got just might be appreciated. Possibly.

Just to jump in about socks - I've always hated that gap 'twixt sock & trousers and have only recently discovered (where have I been?) M&S's knee high wool (or majority wool) socks at £8 for two pairs. I have black: not sure if there are other colours. But I am also thinking I might make the move towards coloured tights, like the batty old lady I'm fast becoming (I'm over 60, OP).

Nain1959 · 15/12/2023 07:26

Maybe a framed photo of the family? It’s something that I would love. New set of mugs? Tbh I’m always happy with anything that I have.
