MIL is the HARDEST person ever to buy for. She doesn't really have any hobbies, doesn't like food presents (have given her a hamper of home made food and drink last year and no one has looked less impressed at anything...!) and has an incredibly minimalist house so doesn't like home gifts. She doesn't like going places she hasn't been so a restaurant/theatre voucher wouldn't be used.
Every Christmas or birthday she kills me! Anyway I have got her:

  • Fluffy slippers
  • Gel eye mask that can be kept in fridge or warmed
  • Small box of chocolates
  • Make up bag
Does this sound ok?

Sjeesj, as if all of us over 50s women like the same stuff. So she works and watches tv. How about 6 month subscription to Channel 4 or Netflix or some other advert free channel. Even Freevee without ads. People that work in office roles tend to like stationery, is that an option?

Personally, I wouldn't like any of those except the chocolates. Eye mask - never used one. Slippers - I have some, might like the ones you buy and might not. I only keep one pair on the go, until they wear out. Make up bag - I have more than I need.

But then, I would have loved your home-made food and drink.

53 here. It doesn’t sound exciting but I would use and appreciate all the items you’ve bought. I’d add something from Molton Brown or the red wine and she should be very happy.

Terrribletwos · 13/12/2023 18:06

I wouldn't want any of that. Just money or a gift voucher please. I guess women over 60 are as varied as those younger.

CallmeSand · 13/12/2023 18:06

Slippers are a personal choice and why give make up bags? You only need one plus again it's a very personal thing. Get her a cashmere scarf or cashmere anything!

@SirVixofVixHall she does drink coffee but prefers instant.
She isn’t really into clothes at all. I’ve bought jewellery in the past but she’s never worn it.

Get her Ringtons instant and some of their biscuits etc. We get vans coming to the house but you can order online. They do hampers but you could make one up. Everything is wonderful.

PlumPeony · 13/12/2023 18:07

Scarf, gloves, hamper, massage/ facial voucher?

FrostyFlo · 13/12/2023 18:07

Rather than those gifts how about.
Cashmere bed socks
Posh body lotion
A book in her favourite genre / author.

Ulysees · 13/12/2023 18:08

I'm 55 and go hiking love painting and am easy to buy for. She sounds hard. Have you asked her?

ForlTonightlGodlIslalDJ · 13/12/2023 18:09

These aren't age specific gifts 🙄age has no bearing on whether you like chocolate or not, or fluffy slippers.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 13/12/2023 18:10

I would hate all of that. I am 57 and would prefer a pair of trainers or a specific perfume.
But if someone bought me some Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair I would be ecstatic

FluffComingOut · 13/12/2023 18:10

She probably has slippers and doesn't sound adventurous enough to embrace another pair!

How about cashmere scarf or gloves/slippers/jumper. I think M&S do cheaper ones.

VirusSchmirus · 13/12/2023 18:10

This is what I think is missing with gift giving these days (sounding old).
The point is you try and buy something you think they'd like. Sometimes the gift is a hit and you get something you love, and would have never thought of, and sometimes its a bit shite. Otherwise, it just becomes a shopping list of stuff that the person could probably buy themselves.

A gift is usually a surprise, otherwise why bother wrapping it up? Just transfer the money and be done with it, but that's no fun.

Thought is a big thing, and it looks like you're taking care to think about what to buy. That should be enough. So I say stick with what you think it right and yah boo to ungrateful people who will most likely never be happy.

Ulysees · 13/12/2023 18:11

Coffee bags taste like proper coffee. I'm with Mil and prefer instant. Well as long as it's Ringtons. Nescafe is the work of the devil 🤮

psuedocream3 · 13/12/2023 18:13

My mum is in this age range and I've got her some funky socks, big yankee candle set and champagne, some m&s sweets and chocs and christmas tree decorations. Not exciting and particularly random, I'm not sure if she even likes candles but they are handy I guess.

Issummernearlyover · 13/12/2023 18:14

As an oldie I'd be happy with a pot of hyacinths. Booze, posh chocolates.

Ittastesvile · 13/12/2023 18:15

I'd donate the money eg twin her toilet, sponsor a guide dog etc. It sounds like she doesn't really want or need anything so maybe someone needy could benefit instead!

I do love real wool socks and Cashmere gloves though.

diddl · 13/12/2023 18:17

I'm in that age & I'm getting fluffy slippers this year!

I do want them though!

Was she not impressed with the hamper because the contents were home made?

When people don't know what they want themselves I really wonder what the point of buying is tbh.

We rarely know what to get each other so either don't bother or just tend to get chocolate, biscuits that we wouldn't normally buy.

charmedtomeetyou · 13/12/2023 18:18

I'm 53 and they are fine but a bit generic tbh . Everyone is different. I am an old goth rockabilly chick and would love a voucher for a gig or a nice cactus plant or a beautiful edition of a classic horror novel or a fancy red lipstick!

Mountaindhew · 13/12/2023 18:18

As pp said she might buy you what she likes- buy it back!

diddl · 13/12/2023 18:20

Thing is though fir a lot of these suggestions-why wouldn't she just say herself if she wanted them?

FancyFanny · 13/12/2023 18:20

Those gifts sound ok, but would prefer something else.

I'm 50 and my ideal gift would be toiletries from somewhere like Elemis, Loccitane, Neal's Yard etc. or a voucher for Cult beauty, Selfridges, John Lewis Anthropologie, And Other Stories, The White Company or Space NK

FancyFanny · 13/12/2023 18:22

A high end bottle of Gin would be appreciated too!

BoredofBlonde · 13/12/2023 18:24

Pedicure/ manicure vouchers, cinema gift card or a bottle of really nice perfume (plus chocs with everything) are my go-tos
