MIL is the HARDEST person ever to buy for. She doesn't really have any hobbies, doesn't like food presents (have given her a hamper of home made food and drink last year and no one has looked less impressed at anything...!) and has an incredibly minimalist house so doesn't like home gifts. She doesn't like going places she hasn't been so a restaurant/theatre voucher wouldn't be used.
Every Christmas or birthday she kills me! Anyway I have got her:

  • Fluffy slippers
  • Gel eye mask that can be kept in fridge or warmed
  • Small box of chocolates
  • Make up bag
Does this sound ok?

Thanks @BombaySamphire and @TinkerTiger I look forward to getting my trophy 🙄

Honestly, I didn't say anything the OP didn't say herself. Or loads of other posters. She sounds difficult to please and ungrateful for what OP has done in the past. And the OP has better things to worry about than this with her husband being ill.

Sounds like you've got lots of ideas from nicer posters than me @GotMooMilk and I'll reiterate my earlier good wishes for your husband's treatment and for a healthy 2024.

I'm that age and would like some very specific running kit.

But given your options, I think 'spend the lot on wine' is the best bet. A £25 bottle of wine could be very nice indeed.

mumda · 13/12/2023 17:04

Give her a donkey. One of those overseas charity gifts. Or nothing.
Seriously not worth breaking a sweat for the ungrateful.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 13/12/2023 17:05

Bouquet of flowers delivered.

strawberriesarenot · 13/12/2023 17:05

I'm 63 and boring (but I read and garden and work full time). However, I don't use make up and have slippers, wouldn't want a gel mask either. Socks would be more useful than slippers. I like things that use up, eg. candles, flowers, bulbs in a pot, food for the garden birds, bar soap, hot chocolate.
I have enough nice notebooks, hand cream, pens and pencils, pretty mugs, perfume and bits of jewellery to last to the end of my life.

Angrycat2768 · 13/12/2023 17:06

I am 50 and would like those but would expect them from friends, not really relatives. I also think some people just have too much ' stuff', including me by this age. I'd like usable or edible stuff. A nice hamper with wine/ chocolates/ biscuits? I get my mum a photo calendar of the kids every year as she loves it and has kept them since they were born, and a Piglets Pantry afternoon tea hamper more recently, which she also loves.

Simpleblessingsxx · 13/12/2023 17:09

How lovely to be so considerate 😊👍
My thoughts are before making suggestions you really need to know the person. You mention the 50-60 age group. When you consider Kylie Minogue is late 50s as an example of many nowadays in this age bracket I really think you have to look at the indivudual and their outlook in life as they get older when deciding on gifts 😊👍

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/12/2023 17:11

I am 53. I would be very disappointed with the slippers, unless they were really good sheepskin ones. I wouldn't use the face thing or make up bag. I'd only want the chocolates if they were really good ones or my favourite if cheap.

I'd rather have a decent box of choices and some flowers tbh.

Chelseagreen · 13/12/2023 17:11

Its been overlooked, but MIL has a son who’s very ill at the moment. Maybe she’s really not bothered by Christmas this year. Maybe confide in MIL and ask if this year you can not get gifts for each other. She might be relieved.

DelphiniumBlue · 13/12/2023 17:12

My default present for almost anybody is a really nice mug, depending on the taste of the person - could be bone china, glazed pottery, big or small, but everyone uses mugs of some sort ! You have to be observant to see what type of mug the recipient prefers , but once you've established, it's easy! I would be delighted to receive one, ( or a set).
Have you thought about a magazine subscription, which could relate to an interest?
I'm not sure about buying things like slippers for people unless you know their tastes, .

VimtoVimto · 13/12/2023 17:12

When I was stuck to buy presents for people I usually bought a small box of chocolates and a M&S voucher because even if they don’t like their clothes they could always use it in the foodhall.

WinterDeWinter · 13/12/2023 17:14

I think the main point is that there isn't a good gift for a 50-60 yo - there's only a good gift for that particular 50-60yo and they probably would have liked it at 40 and will still like it at 70.

So - she sounds like a slightly dull person who is houseproud and likes TV.

A radio times subscription? Netflix or Amazon Prime or Now TV subscription? One of those things that goes over the sofa arm to put remote into?

A house gadget thing - a mini-vac or something from that company on instagram that I cant remember name of - niceideaco or something? They sell cleaning and organisation things that do actually look quite useful. New luxury towels to match her colour scheme?

That's all I've got but you get the general idea.

I agree we sometimes just don't need stuff I've bought dh some fancy coffee and chocolates he likes and I've asked for wine and we are looking at going away for a few days. we just don't need/want stuff.

Threeboysadogandacat · 13/12/2023 17:15

I’m 59 and probably difficult to buy for. I be happiest with

Nice bottle of wine
Box of Lindt lindor
Stationary
A kitten

Viviennemary · 13/12/2023 17:15

Wouldn't really want any of those things. A voucher would be better then she can get what she wants. Or ask her what she would like.

Snowconecanfly · 13/12/2023 17:15

I used my Tesco points to buy a 6mth Radio Times subscription for a tricky relative, who watches tv

Barnowlsandbluebells · 13/12/2023 17:16

I'm 51 and wouldn't like any of those but I'd honestly prefer a donation to charity on my behalf or to receive nothing. You MIL sounds a tricky customer but she can donate or regift anything she doesn't want.

Nynaeva · 13/12/2023 17:17

I'm smack bang in the middle of that age range and although those are very sweet and thoughtful gifts they're a bit generic.

Does she read much? Readly subscription maybe? BritBox subscription? Amazon Prime? NoW TV? Aromatherapy massage or Indian Head massage? Some tickets to a show? Georgie Porgie pudding selection? Something from her local area? Local garden centre vouchers? Cream tea in a box? Something from Betty's??

Or, our standby for impossible-to-buy-for-people, what about some One4All vouchers or similar? She could use those pretty much everywhere to get something to her taste.

stepintochristmas1 · 13/12/2023 17:19

One thing I've always found is , everyone over at least fifty (me) loves something nostalgic , something that reminds them of the past , their past . Maybe not the slippers , it's a bit old person 😁.

stayathomer · 13/12/2023 17:19

Not the age group so feel free to ignore but my sister did my mum a calendar of pictures with the family in them and she talks about it all the time!

TerfTalking · 13/12/2023 17:19

FortunataTagnips · 13/12/2023 16:45

Ticket to Dignitas?

For someone in her fifties? Fucks sake, it will come round a lot quicker than you think and I hope you remember posting that when it does.

Ramalangadingdong · 13/12/2023 17:20

Sounds good to me, but I don't care what people get me - I just like the gesture. I just enjoy going along with the ritual of having something to open on xmas day.

FortunataTagnips · 13/12/2023 17:21

@TerfTalking I’m already in my fifties, thanks! I was commenting on the apparent joylessness of her life, not her age.

Almostwelsh · 13/12/2023 17:21

A jigsaw?

AutumnLeaves5 · 13/12/2023 17:21

A selection of mini bottles of red could be an option. Depending on how much she drinks, a small bottle is nice glass full which is sometimes all you need if no-one else is drinking!
