I've searched for threads on this as I'm sure there must be some?

What's everyone planning for Christmas Eve dinner this year?

OP posts:
aintnospringchicken · 03/12/2023 17:11

Continental meats, cheeses, olives, crusty bread ,chutney and a baked Camembert

titchy · 03/12/2023 17:12

Salmon en croute for Christmas Eve.
Duck Christmas Day.
Ham and leftovers Boxing Day.

I always suggest alternatives but adult dcs like the tradition!

Bernadinetta · 03/12/2023 17:13

Pasta bake

WinterParakeets · 03/12/2023 17:14

Chestnut ragu (DS is veggie so it's easier to make something we can all eat)

Pannettone pudding or yule log - not decided which. Or maybe tiramisu.

I made this one year and it was gorgeous. If I was cooking this year, I’d do it again. https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fish-recipes/sea-bass-in-puff-pastry/
Its quite rich so you don’t need carbs - just a green salad alongside.

That looks brilliant! I love it!

CirceIsMyHomegirl · 03/12/2023 17:15

@DelphiniumBlue I make up the casserole as I go, but it's usually a variation of chopped leeks, celery, shallots cooked in masses of butter, then fresh venison that's not been hung for long, a bottle of Guinness/ half bottle of red wine and some carrots- bubble for about 5 hours adding fresh garlic, herbs as you go. I'm tempted to try some dumplings this year too.

Greekgreens · 03/12/2023 17:16

Chinese takeaway

PeanutAndBanana · 03/12/2023 17:17

We have family favourite crisps, fish stew with garlic bread and ice cream. It's tradition and no one ever has asked for something different.

IdealisticCynic · 03/12/2023 17:18

I’m sure I said this on a similar thread a few days ago but: we always do M&S or Waitrose party food, with a baked cheese, nice bread and crudités. And sometimes watch a film together while eating!

stayathomer · 03/12/2023 17:18

chicken kievs, croquets, potatoes and beans. Looking forward to it!!

Chinese takeaway. I can't remember how it started but it became tradition somewhere along the way.

Same!

Oh wow, I will definitely try that. Red wine AND Guinness?

BrimfulOfMash · 03/12/2023 17:21

Rib of beef
Trifle

It’s a good question. I can’t remember what we usually do, think it’s probably light and scrappy. This year we are going out for Christmas lunch, which is lovely but means no leftovers, so I’m thinking we should definitely bake a ham or make a pot roast or something on Christmas Eve. I love leftovers.

Justcallmebebes · 03/12/2023 17:25

I eat out now on Xmas day at adult DC's but Xmas eve, everyone comes to me in the evening after the kids nativity at church for slow cooked beef stroganoff. It's a tradition and usually a brilliant evening

BreadInCaptivity · 03/12/2023 17:26

I do Nigellas ham cooked in cola with a black treacle glaze. I deliberately cook a large ham.

It tastes amazing.

I cook it a few days before then on Xmas Evening I just have to glaze it and pop in the oven.

I serve it with buttery mash, braised red cabbage (which I also cook ahead so just have to warm) and parsley sauce.

I make double mash so I don't have to do that on Christmas Day (we also have roast potatoes).

It then means I have loads of ham for over the festive period that massively reduces cooking effort (all the relatives come to us over the holiday for 3/4 days).

It gets used in sandwiches, in a quick turkey, leek and ham pie (shop bought pastry just have to make a white sauce with chicken stock/herbs and throw in the meat and veg), for breakfast/brunch on English muffins with poached eggs and store bought hollandaise (or just with scrambled eggs on toast) or an omelette with the leftover cheese platter from Christmas Day.

FestiveFrederica · 03/12/2023 17:27

Something spicy for me! I'll either make a curry or a tagine or maybe spiced aubergine and lamb mince

WilmaWonka · 03/12/2023 17:30

I do a ham in coke on Christmas Eve as tradition and we have it hot with freshly baked baguettes, with a salad, cheeses and anti pasti bits on the side.

Fruit and nut salad with a raspberry dressing for dessert.

Then we toast American size marshmallows which we dip into hot chocolate while watching a Christmas movie.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 03/12/2023 17:30

Always fajitas and nachos.

CurlewKate · 03/12/2023 17:31

We always have Madhur Jaffrey's Prawn in red pepper sauce and aromatic yellow rice. Dp has already made the red pepper sauce and put it in the freezer.

As a side point. Why is bread on Mumsnet always crusty? I don't think I've ever heard the term in real life!

Giggorata · 03/12/2023 17:34

This year we are having twice baked jacket potatoes, with the insides scraped out and mashed up with diced onion, something like Boursin or herby cream cheese and then into the oven to brown, along with bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms with a green salad.
And I will add a very crisp black pudding, to crumble over it all.

NancyJoan · 03/12/2023 17:35

Lots of seafood, warm bread, crisp lettuce.

Dontcallmescarface · 03/12/2023 17:40

g0at · 03/12/2023 16:31

We now do a beige food platter every year - party type food like pizza, chips, mini sausage rolls, spring rolls, mozzarella sticks etc.... And looking forward to it already 😂

That's our Christmas Day dinner.

We are having Mushroom Wellington. DP is having his with Roast potatoes, pigs-in-blankets and veg..mine is going to be mash potato(I don't like roast ones), veggie pigs-in-blankets and veg. Looking forward to it.

mrssunshinexxx · 03/12/2023 17:45

Pizza express :)
