Where to buy a real Christmas tree?

35 replies

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 07:37

I want to buy a real, 6 foot Nordmann Fir this weekend.

Where would you recommend I buy it? I was thinking of either B&M, B&Q, or Asda. Would you recommend any of these stores? Have you had good experiences with their trees?

I want to spend below £80.

I bought one from a Christmas tree farm last year for £80, but it’s sadly closed this year, and I don’t know of any others nearby. Thank you.

IKEA are cheap.

SliceOfBread · 28/11/2023 07:38

Where are you based?

DustyLee123 · 28/11/2023 07:50

Garden centre

reluctantbrit · 28/11/2023 07:52

We buy ours at a garden center, they have them unwrapped so we can see them properly and we know they will hold for 2 weeks indoor (ours only is up from the 22 onwards).

I would try to chat to a local FB group about it.

piscofrisco · 28/11/2023 07:56

Lidl

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 08:35

@ReadySalty

I was considering Ikea, but I found out that mine don’t sell them.

@SliceOfBread

I don’t want to say exactly, but I’m in Greater London.

My Husband doesn’t want anything more than about a 20 minute drive each way.

I saw lovely ones in Aldi yesterday for £17.99 I think they were 5ft not 6ft though

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/11/2023 08:38

If you buy it now, do NOT put it up yet. Stick it outside in a bucket of water and don't bring it in until a few says before Christmas.

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 08:38

I’ll have a look at our garden centre and see. Ours is expensive though, so I’m wondering what the Christmas tree prices will be like!

Look online for a CHRISTMAS TREE farm near you 🌲🌲🌲

They are all over the place and they either have tractor rides to go to cut down a tree that you choose and then put on a trailer and bag then up for you. You don't cut them down they have staff that do that

Or you can just choose the ones that they have cut down the day before

Or failing that a garden centre

Check that the branches are bendable so the tree is not dried out before you even get it home

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 08:40

I’ll have a look in Lidl and Aldi.

Sorry I got distracted between reading your post and writing so forgot you said you don't have a farm near you now

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 08:46

@EmmaGrundyForPM

Thank you for the advice, but that won’t be any good for us. We will need to decorate the tree this weekend, inside our house.

Our tree last year still looked perfect when we took it down in January, and we’d had it in the house since the first weekend of December.

@brassbells

Thank you for that.

I told a slight tale when I said we didn’t have one nearby… there’s one about a 35 minute drive away, but ideally we’d like to buy one closer to home.

If you buy it now, do NOT put it up yet. Stick it outside in a bucket of water and don't bring it in until a few says before Christmas.

And saw an inch or two off the bottom first, so it can take up the water.

We usually get ours from a small local shop, and when setting up it goes in a heavy bucket full of wet gravel, which is topped up with water almost daily. That way it lasts well until taken down on 6th January, even if put up on say 10th December. I cover the bucket with red or other Christmassy paper.

Torganer · 28/11/2023 09:11

I saw some for £25 in Lidl. We always order a potted 7ft tree online for delivery which cost around £65.

caringcarer · 28/11/2023 09:37

I got a 6 foot one from Asda. It was only £20.

Excellent advice. Mine is put in our garden in a bucket of water.

I just googled my area and went (or rather will go with as haven't got one yet) the one with the highest rating. It's a pop up stand run by a garden centre/grower. I feel many supermarket/big shop trees are cut weeks ago and you can't always see them if already netted.

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/11/2023 09:58

Thank you for this. I can’t remember if my Husband did this last year. I’ll need to ask to borrow my Dad’s saw, or buy one at the weekend, unless we brought one last year! Gosh, I just can’t remember!

Thank you for so many of your recommendations. Sorry for not replying individually to everyone. I’m off work sick at the moment, and this as help distract me as I deal with a fever and chills, but I’m starting to feel very drowsy now.

I was concerned about that with the trees at the supermarkets that whenever I’ve seen them, they tend to be netted, and so you can’t see the shape.

crimsonlake · 28/11/2023 10:05

I would go to a garden centre or local farm which sells them where you can view them before they are netted up.
Mine does not go up until a few days before Christmas, however I am considering buying one this weekend when I have help to transport it home and keep it in a bucket of water outside. Typing this has just reminded me that last year the water in the bucket had frozen solid and it was a struggle to defrost it and free the tree from a big block of ice!

MissDollyMix · 28/11/2023 15:41

I always get our real tree (we also have a fake one) from Home Bargains. It's a tenner so feel I can't go wrong and DH can't complain about the extravagance of having two trees! Although they're cheap they've always been really nice - just as nice as the £80 ones I used to get from the garden centre!

TerfTalking · 28/11/2023 15:43

I’ve bought a few from Asda, you can’t see what you’re getting as they’re usually netted but I can see enough to avoid a bushy one.

ive found them to be very good value, attractive and long lasting as long as they’re in water in the stand.
