Teacher gifts for £5 each- is it possible?

If there's a thread on teacher gifts please point me that way!

DC's school have had a bit of restructuring and so now has 5 (yes 5) teachers. All input equally (2 are TA's but full time).

We also use after school hub most weeks, there are another 3 staff, again they seem to share the role equally.

That's 8 ladies to buy for, £40 if I can limit it to £5 each.

Their card will have a little message from dc but dc desperate to give a gift like all the other kids are...

Any ideas welcome 🤗

My DD is a junior school teacher and every year gives a bag of chocolate to the food bank. I’m a former 6 th form teacher and loved getting cards and messages from former pupils. The occasional plant or bunch of flowers was nice too but not expected or essential. I used to get my kids to make a card for their teacher and maybe give a book token to any that had gone above and beyond, but you really don’t have to. A big tin of biscuits for all to share would be fine.

Meadowgrasses · 27/11/2023 06:32

I’m a teacher (now in secondary so no more Christmas presents 🤣) but used to be in primary. Please believe teachers when they say no presents! Cards, honestly are lovely! I have kept very few of the presents- a funny little wonky homemade felt key ring, a wooden bowl hand-turned by a dad and a little lizard handmade from beads. I don’t need cups, hand cream, cheap chocolates, cheap booze or coffee vouchers. I would much, much rather have nothing than someone wasted money on the cheapest something they could find (because multiple cheap things still add up and it’s so wasteful buying this stuff for the sake of it, only the shops benefit). It sounds ungrateful but I don’t like those kind of things, don’t use them and don’t want the clutter. Of course I appreciated the thought but they did all get regifted or raffle donated. A present for the classroom is a great idea though or a box of biccies for the staff room (but maybe not on the last day of term!).

If you’re buying for teachers and TA’s (we didn’t as wasn’t a thing at DC’s school) will you be buying for the school cleaners, kitchen staff, office, maintenance etc? Why buy for teachers and not other school staff?

A teacher friend say most of what she is given is donated to a foodbank or charity shop.

@CleverClogg

Whilst I understand how awful your situation is, Costa do not have a personal vendetta against you for your arm movements.

I think you need to see the bigger picture that it is a graphic on a card. Nobody drinks coffee in the way that picture suggests. It is meant to display inclusivity, not a slight on you. Its (again) a thread about gifts!

Gifts are really kind but a box of chocolate biscuits for the staff room ..or year group staff is perfectly lovely and will be appreciated.
Please don't spend more than you can afford....the teachers all know how tricky life is at the moment.

Not much less than £5, but M&S did a cute little 'light up hot chocolate tin' for £4? I was planning on getting this.

ohfook · 27/11/2023 06:55

I get one box of celebrations or similar and just write a card out addressing it to the Year 4 team (or whatever year my kid is in that year) and thank them for their hard work.

One of my ds goes to a special school with 8 ta's, 1 teacher, transport support, driver and therapists. They get a small bottle of wine and some chocolate, works out at about £3 each.

Peablockfeathers · 27/11/2023 07:00

Honestly just get some chocolates or something for them all to share or to pop in the staffroom. My DSis is a teacher and the amount of crap she doesn't want but has to pretend to be grateful for is astounding. The school newsletter always says not to get presents but the best teacher mugs, keyring and whatever else keep coming; they're shoved in a box in the attic as when is she going to use 30 plus mugs and other misc tat? She does keep all of the cards in a folder and cherishes it though. Also the £5 coffee card, buy a nice tin of coffee instead.

This is a really good idea!

Or a £5 gift card

Bloobloo · 27/11/2023 07:10

Could you just take in something for them all to share?

Bloobloo · 27/11/2023 07:12

What about making up a nice hamper for the staff room with nice coffee, nice tea bags, sweets, chocolates, nice soft drinks/fruit/crackers etc

Inclusivity?

Celebrating unhappy girls having their healthy breasts removed because they were struggling with abuse, autism, mental health issues, being female in a porn soaked culture or any of the other reasons that can make puberty traumatic?

Try listening to some detransitioners who were told that being trans would solve their problems and now bitterly regret the irreversible damage they have done to their bodies.

FYI, @CleverClogg is far from the only woman who has had a mastectomy for medical reasons and finds the Costa imagery offensive. I have come across several others on Twitter/X and no doubt there are many more who haven't posted on social media.,

TeacherGiftAdvice · 27/11/2023 07:16

Ooh I see coffee gift cards coming up as a suggestion.
I have to say I have a pile of these, I don't use as I can't drink coffee it gives me migraines. I don't often go into town either so there just isn't the opportunity for more than one or two to be used on a slice of cake in a year.
Alcohol too, gets tipped straight down the sink as we don't have it in our house and it can't be left on school premises.
Honestly, I'll say it again write a letter or draw a picture or a thank you email.(bonus pints if you CC the head.)

coodawoodashooda · 27/11/2023 07:20

I'm a teacher. Teachers DO NOT expect gifts. When my kids were in nursery I put a box of biscuits and drinks for the staffroom. No way would I spend £40.

IggyAce · 27/11/2023 07:27

Honestly teachers appreciate a card from a child.
If you really want to send a gift with that many I’d do a hamper for the staff room, so a selection of biscuits, tea, coffee and hot chocolate sachets.

jellymaker · 27/11/2023 07:34

Get something for their classroom. I always got books or stationary.

Meadowgrasses · 27/11/2023 07:37

This thread is getting quite funny now. ALL the teachers are saying please no presents, just a card. And still people are suggesting pointless tat! What is anyone supposed to do with a light up hot chocolate tin?

Nellodee · 27/11/2023 07:39

You can get personalised bic four colour pens on eBay- who doesn’t need a new four colour pen?

itsgettingweird · 27/11/2023 07:50

Agree that presents aren't necessary but always appreciated.

If you want to then £1.50 chocolates of £2 fluffy socks are much cheaper and useful!

This is why the charity shops and foodbanks do well in January!

cariadlet · 27/11/2023 07:56

When did teacher gifts (and teachers buying Christmas and end of year gifts for their pupils) become a thing anyway?

I was at primary school in the 70s and at secondary in the early 80s and it was completely unheard of.

By the time I started teaching in the 90s it seems to have become universal. It came as quite a shock!

smilesup · 27/11/2023 08:01

I once unintentionally made a TA cry by writing a very heartfelt message of her kindness and professional brilliance with helping DS2 who was struggling with speech therapy (she actually attended a speech therapy session with me and Ds on her day off and then did sessions with him at school.) Can't remember if we did a gift but she loved the card.

crochetmonkey74 · 27/11/2023 13:07

I feel really strongly that people are not listening. Teachers on here are LITERALLY saying don't get us anything and people are still putting pressure on themselves

Even the staff room presents like biscuits or tea bags etc are not necessary
