Teacher gifts for £5 each- is it possible?

If there's a thread on teacher gifts please point me that way!

DC's school have had a bit of restructuring and so now has 5 (yes 5) teachers. All input equally (2 are TA's but full time).

We also use after school hub most weeks, there are another 3 staff, again they seem to share the role equally.

That's 8 ladies to buy for, £40 if I can limit it to £5 each.

Their card will have a little message from dc but dc desperate to give a gift like all the other kids are...

Any ideas welcome 🤗

I'm a teacher. I would be horrified if I thought parents were worrying about presents.

The best things I've ever received are home made notes from the kids or emails from parents anyway.

Never feel like you have to get anything. It really, really isn't expected!

hattie43 · 26/11/2023 09:04

I wouldn't be buying individual gifts , it'd be chocolates or nice biscuits for the staff room and the kids can do a personal card

cariadlet · 26/11/2023 09:14

I'm a teacher.
Absolutely no need for gits, especially if it would cost £40.

Someone told me that the topic had come up in the WhatsApp group for parents in my class.
I asked her to try and feedback that my first choice was just a card and my 2nd choice was everyone contributed £1 and someone bought me a book token from the class.

If only 2 thirds to of the class contributed, that would be £20, enough to get me a couple of books that I would really like.

Much better than parents getting stressed and spending money they can't afford on stuff I don't want.

Have you got an Aldi near you? Their Christmas range is great this year. A pretty tin of Danish biscuits is about £3, or they have various balleycastle gifts (thier baileys dupe) including crackers which come in packs of 3 so give one cracker each, or florentines/hot chocolate stirrers etc. Will defo work out at less than £5 each. If giving an alcohol miniature you could also give a sheet mask or similar, to give a welcome 15 minutes of relaxation to start the holiday

Rocknrollstar · 26/11/2023 09:16

I write this every year. DS is a primary school teacher and what he appreciates is a letter from parents saying how much they appreciate what he has done for their children but most of all a letter/ drawing from the children.

clpsmum · 26/11/2023 09:21

I have a ridiculous amount to buy for. I bought them all a miniature bottle of wine for about £2 and a box of mince pie fudge £1.59 both from Tesco

TeacherGiftAdvice · 26/11/2023 09:23

I'm a primary school teacher.
In all honesty I would rather you spent your money on making sure your child comes to school with their own pen, pencil, ruler scissors and glue stick.
If they really really feel they want to give a present get down to poundland and buy a box of maltesers.
You wouldn't buy anyone else a gift for just doing their job. We're no more deserving of gifts than anybody else and contrary to popular belief we are paid quite well if we don't need to buy classroom supplies.
Edited to add :
And don't waste your money making home made food - 9 times out of ten it gets binned. A picture I can take home and store easily or a homemade decoration I can keep and put on the the classroom Christmas tree each year would be massively appreciated though.

savoycabbage · 26/11/2023 09:35

Don't do it. It's completely unnecessary, honestly.

PastTheGin · 26/11/2023 09:40

A card with a heartfelt personal message is the best gift.
I also think that a nice big fruit basket for the staff room in January would be an amazing and much cheaper gift.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/11/2023 09:41

DS gave her teacher an electric pencil sharpener once, because she was always wishing she had one!

One of DS's teachers (same school) requested no gifts, but if they wanted to get something, then a toy or game for the "wet play" cupboard would be nice. DS got a jigsaw of a book they'd just read.

In DD's final year at that school, 2 years ago , the headmaster (who was ds's previously mentioned class teacher) sent out a letter asking for parents not to send in teacher presents, but cards would be appreciated if your child wanted to write one. Man's a hero!

I agree with others that you shouldn’t feel that you have to buy but I always like to give a little something. This year I have bought these Lindt crackers from Amazon, they are £3 each but there is 5% off if you buy 4 so if you need 8 that would make them £2.85 each and only £22.80 for all 8. I’ve bought 4.

This is why I love the class collections which are much moaned about on MN. No one need put in more than £5 but the members of staff still get a decent gift/voucher and no one's forgotten. The year I was class rep, there were so many adults in the class during that week that I had a quick word with the teacher and asked how if, hypothetically, I happened to be organised a class gift, what would be the best percentages. Her breakdown of who was in the class on what days was very different to that which had been given to me by my 8yo!

WhatALump · 26/11/2023 09:51

As someone who spent many years working in a school most staff I worked with would bin homemade goodies like this in case the children had ‘helped’. You never know what germs are in them.
I would say if you really want to buy a gift then a costa/Starbucks gift card or some chocolates that you can get on offer would be very well received and so would boxes of biscuits for the staff room

Seriously79 · 26/11/2023 09:56

My go to teacher present was always fluffy Christmas a bit of fancy wrapping and a bow and you're done!

SodapopCurtis · 26/11/2023 09:59

Hi
A gift is absolutely not necessary. And not all teacher would like this but I get a Christmas tree decoration. I have some from children I taught almost 20 yes ago that come out each year.

I do class's present so get a decoration and a voucher from a group of parents.

I buy a nice £5 bottle of cava for mine.

Equimum · 26/11/2023 10:19

All the female teachers/TAs for my kids are getting a Cath Kidston mini hand cream and a couple of Lindt balls in a small paper bag. With Nectar card, you get four hand creams in crackers in a box for £8 in Sainsburys, so £2 each. I bought a big box of Lindt and got some mini paper gift bags, 6 for £2 in the Range - so less than £3 each.

Maddy70 · 26/11/2023 10:26

I'm a teacher. Please don't stress about presents at an already expensive time.

Cards are always appreciated and if you so want your child to hand something over. Make it really cheap. ...a chocolate Santa (think the fredo ones)

User1343 · 26/11/2023 10:30

Handmade card or drawn picture with a message from their pupil, if of an age to write.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 26/11/2023 10:30

Interesting that people who are keen to give something to primary school staff don’t give to secondary school. Aren’t secondary school staff hard working then?

Just have a look on the threads here on Mumsnet. People worried about gas prices, school shoes prices, after school childcare, and on and on.

You all know the average primary school teacher makes 36k right?

£5 on Costa gift cards 👍

extremely offensive - I would be very distressed if anyone gave me this

ismu · 26/11/2023 10:32

As a teacher the things that really mattered were handmade cards from the children themselves although I was once given a steak pie by a butchers family for Hogmanay which was much appreciated!!!

CleverClogg · 26/11/2023 10:34

a little christmas tree ornament? A tiny box of two or three luxury chocolates? A new colour of board marker? A miniature of whiskey or similar?

Or a box of biscuits for all 5 to share?

But really, teachers do not need anything, a nice card with a personal message is best.

A £5 Costa gift card?

Edited

Yes, I have had breast cancer, and live daily with the trauma, side effects, pain and disabilities of a double mastectomy.

Which costa deem a healthy life style choice to be celebrated in their advertising. No way can I raise either arm as half as high as shown in the advert. And I never will

no one who cares anything for victims of breast cancer should be giving a single penny to costa
