Do you like Christmas cards ?

We have some elderly relatives / neighbours and friends & family that don't live close by and won't be seeing them for Christmas.I

We send those people cards and I guess it's nice to receive back but if I'm being honest I hate having to find space for cards that we are given and expected to reciprocate .
I'm also in a group ( hobby about 10 people ) and we give each other cards. I

We even have someone in our street ( hello Jeff & Mary ) that post one through our door and as well as their name put @ No 9 , so we send one to them as well ,
I wouldn't know them if I walked past them !

So would we be a grinch if we culled down our Christmas card list ?

I'm still receiving & therefore sending cards to people I worked with 10 years ago and never seen since !

No. I don’t send them and I bin any that I receive. Messy wasteful clutter imo.
I barely get any now which suits me.

Goodornot · 21/11/2023 13:13

What a bundle of joy some people are.

I love them.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 21/11/2023 13:14

I like them, but only when they're sent with feeling.

So cull the people you don't really care about but keep the elderly relatives, as they probably love them.

softfig · 21/11/2023 13:21

I love cards though I did do a degree in design and stationary was one of special interests. I only send them to people I really like & my smallish family. I can understand why people don't like bits of card cluttering up their house too though.

Notmetoo · 21/11/2023 13:22

I love Christmas cards. They are part of Christmas and help to decorate the house making it look like Christmas.
But I hate the minimalist unlived in look especially at Christmas time.

AuntieMarys · 21/11/2023 13:28

Loathe them. I send none ( have done for about 7 years) and receive about 2 which never see the light of day.

EversoDisorganised · 21/11/2023 13:31

I love them, I don't send or receive as many as I used to but won't be stopping any time soon. I have a wire holder that can take about 100 of them (we found this out when the DCs were at primary school and sending them to their whole classes), it sits on a shelf taking up very little space. I don't like the minimalist look at Christmas either, we prefer the cosy fully decorated look. I can understand people stopping them on cost/environmental grounds though.

CornishGem1975 · 21/11/2023 13:32

I really miss them, loved receiving them and I really miss writing them but it costs more to post them these days than it does to buy them, so I don't bother.

hotcandle · 21/11/2023 13:33

I read them and then bin them immediately which really riled up some people on an earlier thread about birthday cards.

The sentiment is lovely and I appreciate them but I don't want them hanging around all December never to be read again.

I don't send them.

PissOffJeffrey · 21/11/2023 13:35

I love them & use the ones we receive as part of our Christmas decorations.

That said, I don't send anywhere near as many as I used to. With a second class stamp costing 75p these days it soon adds up!

Lizzieregina · 21/11/2023 13:35

I love them as it’s a way of keeping in touch with people that I might not have seen for a long time.

I’ve been taking care of kids for years, so absolutely LOVE getting a photo and seeing how they are.

I have a little spot in my living room where I put all the photo cards, I call it The Rogue’s Gallery!

Wolvesart · 21/11/2023 13:38

I love cards and keep them up for as long as poss. I don’t think they are clutter - what looks worse than an empty mantelpiece? It’s like people who put up shelves and then don’t put anything on them. I like to style the room and if it’s around a birthday or Christmas etc that’s all part of it.

Desecratedcoconut · 21/11/2023 13:39

Yes, I think they are lovely. To me, sending and receiving well wishes to the people who are in your life is a beautiful way to lighten up the darkest days of the year.

But sending cards is out and buying matching pyjamas and North Pole breakfasts is in.

gemloving · 21/11/2023 13:40

I love them, family get the ones with their "titles" on it, friends get them handed to unless they are too far and we post x

Lovely. How 'messy' and 'wasteful' are they really?

susiedaisy1912 · 21/11/2023 13:42

If I do receive Xmas cards I don't bother displaying them. When I was younger I enjoyed sending and receiving them but this last 10 years I've realised what a waste of paper and resources they are. I donate the amount I would spend on cards to a charity each year instead. I send one to my dad otherwise he moans but other than that I don't send them anymore. It's actually very liberating not having to spend hours writing the damn things.

Sittingonthefence83 · 21/11/2023 13:45

I love the sentiment of them but I really hate them up, they always end up bending (iykwim) and looking messy. I'm a minimalist though and know it's my problem. I'm afraid I end up cutting out some of the nice designs on them and using them as gift tags to go on presents. Just got to make sure I'm not giving the present to the person who gave me the card!

HobbleY · 21/11/2023 13:45

Oh I love them, still remember how excited I’d get hanging them up when I was younger. Sadly not many people send cards nowadays.

EversoDisorganised · 21/11/2023 13:52

After Christmas I cut them all up and save them for gift tags for next year.

SallyWD · 21/11/2023 13:53

I love them and always send them. I love Christmas and I love letter writing, receiving cards etc.
I know many people don't bother and see it as wasteful but each to their own. It's a nice way to keep in touch with some people.

What a bundle of joy some people are.

I love them.

Charming. What a bundle of joy you are.

Can you really not understand that things that you love and bring you joy may be things that other people can't stand?

Lovely. How 'messy' and 'wasteful' are they really?

I wasn’t intending to be lovely, just answered the op.
I hate them, just messy wherever they go. Waste of paper, waste of stamps, waste of resources full stop.
I don’t like them in my house. Feel free to put them in your own!

FindingMeno · 21/11/2023 14:05

They annoy me.
I put them in a pile and chuck them after Christmas.
A couple of years ago I realised I was always the one to buy, write and post ( omg the cost) the cards, although the majority was for my dh's family.
So I stopped.
And it's at least one part of the Christmas charade that is out of my life!

If someone has sent you a card then it's fucking rude to call it messy wasteful clutter.

Maybe send an email out in advance this year to say that and see how many friends you have left let alone cards. Or do people only have the guts to say these things online?

CoolShoeshine · 21/11/2023 14:09

I’ve always found them a chore to write and send but I was just pondering the other day how sad it was that I have so few elderly relatives and friends of my parents left now. So many have died over the past few years. So I’ll only have a few to write this year, and I’ll miss receiving them from lovely people.
