We have friends calling in on Christmas Eve en route to their relatives. They’ll have been travelling a couple of hours before they get to us, and have another couple of hours driving after us.
We’ll be breakfasting about 10am, they and we have no other meals planned til early evening. They will be with us for about an hour and a half.

I don’t want to do a full English, as I wouldn’t enjoy travelling on such a full stomach. Bacon / sausage butties are an option but a bit ‘every day’.

I don’t want to do smoked salmon bagels, croissants, pain au chocolat, cranberry muffins as we graze on stuff like that on Christmas Day morning.

I eat absolutely anything for breakfast so would be happy with sausage rolls and mince pies but not everyone would agree with me there!

A fresh fruit salad is an option, something fresh would be good given the rich foods that will follow, but would need something else. American style pancakes are an option I guess but will need cooking last minute.

I don’t have a waffle iron, know anyone I can borrow one from, or want to buy one otherwise something like that topped with soft fruits would be perfect. Don't really like shop bought waffles. I also don’t have anything that would make paninis, would also be ideal. Now these are i. my head, struggling to see past them! Any ideas? I’d like it to be vaguely festive but that’s not essential. Not really into Christmas tree shaped crumpets etc.

Thank you

Turkish eggs?
Eggs florentine?

declutteringmymind · 14/11/2023 22:35

Sorry you mentioned festive.

Ponderingwindow · 14/11/2023 22:35

I always do a breakfast strata.

I have always wanted to try it as it's
mentioned in the Christmas movie "The family stone"
I haven't yet 😊

oh that looks perfect!! Might give it a trial run!

Crepes?

SavBlancTonight · 14/11/2023 22:40

I see your point re a Full English but don't think that means you can't do eggs at all. I would probably do scrambled eggs, with smoked salmon, nice toast and a big fruit salad or lovely homemade smoothies.

Shakshuka?

Nigella has a recipe for Christmas muffins which is lovely https://www.nigella.com/recipes/christmas-morning-muffins

This is a fantastic recipe, one of my go-tos for Christmas morning. Have been pondering whether I do my usual Christmas morning foods on Christmas Eve and rethink our Christmas morning breakfast. Thank you for posting this as anyone who hasn't tried them needs to!

Shakshuka: https://downshiftology.com/recipes/shakshuka/

I add chopped mushrooms and spinach - it’s not heavy on the stomach and it’s a doddle to make. You can make the tomato gloop in advance, and then just heat it up till bubbling and add the eggs.

This classic, traditional shakshuka recipe is perfect for breakfast or any meal of the day. A combination of tomatoes, onions, spices and poached eggs.

Sorry you mentioned festive.

No that's ok, it doesn't have to be festive. I probably should have said 'special' ie different to a normal breakfast, which these are. Definitely an option, thank you

We do cinnamon scrolls, croissants, scrambled eggs and bacon, with fruit. All simple and people can serve themselves

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/11/2023 22:44

kippers.

I’ll get my coat.

Crepes?

I'd discounted crepes as i'm not sure whether I could make them in advance? Don't really want people to eat in a relay. Can you make them ahead and reheat?

if we are having people for brunch we go a bit scandi - rye/sourdough, boiled eggs, salmon, pickles and a bit of apple cake. It’s filling but not heavy.

nettie434 · 14/11/2023 22:47

I think SavBlancTonight's is lovely but I am very impressed by the Christmas Strata. I'd probably do Eggs Benedict. You can buy ready made hollandaise if you don't want to make it:

I wouldn't rule out a bacon/sausage buttie. They could be driving to a culinary nightmare and set their hearts on your breakfast as their last nice meal for a few days. Maybe have some coffee or tea ready for them to take away in a flask/cup too.

Bagels, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and smoked salmon and let guests choose their combinations.

Toasted brioche with proper butter and jam/marmalade.

Juice, tea and good coffee.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/11/2023 22:48

I'm another who always does a strata. It's so easy and always delicious. I don't want to have to deal with any fuss Christmas morning.

Shakshuka?

Yes scrambled eggs is an option, I'd discounted as we usually have smoked salmon on Christmas Day but as said upthread, maybe i just need to switch things round a bit.

Smoothies is a great idea, thank you - and easier to manage/prepare than fruit salad. The hotel we were in in the summer did jugs of smoothies. Definitely on the list!

Do you know what, I love kippers. Or at least I love the thought of them but then they repeat on you all day and make the house stink!

Don't forget your scarf and gloves!

Eggs benedict definitely and option. But perhaps you are right about not discounting the buttiies. Excellent idea re hot drinks to take with them. They are passing by on their way back too so even if they don't have a flask with them, we can lend them one. Am also thinking I could pack them some muffins, I can make them ahead and reheat for us on Christmas morning. Thank you
