We have friends calling in on Christmas Eve en route to their relatives. They’ll have been travelling a couple of hours before they get to us, and have another couple of hours driving after us.
We’ll be breakfasting about 10am, they and we have no other meals planned til early evening. They will be with us for about an hour and a half.

I don’t want to do a full English, as I wouldn’t enjoy travelling on such a full stomach. Bacon / sausage butties are an option but a bit ‘every day’.

I don’t want to do smoked salmon bagels, croissants, pain au chocolat, cranberry muffins as we graze on stuff like that on Christmas Day morning.

I eat absolutely anything for breakfast so would be happy with sausage rolls and mince pies but not everyone would agree with me there!

A fresh fruit salad is an option, something fresh would be good given the rich foods that will follow, but would need something else. American style pancakes are an option I guess but will need cooking last minute.

I don’t have a waffle iron, know anyone I can borrow one from, or want to buy one otherwise something like that topped with soft fruits would be perfect. Don't really like shop bought waffles. I also don’t have anything that would make paninis, would also be ideal. Now these are i. my head, struggling to see past them! Any ideas? I’d like it to be vaguely festive but that’s not essential. Not really into Christmas tree shaped crumpets etc.

Thank you

Bagels, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and smoked salmon and let guests choose their combinations.

Toasted brioche with proper butter and jam/marmalade.

Juice, tea and good coffee.

This .
You say nothing heavy but it could be they don't eat anything else until the evening .

hattie43 · 15/11/2023 06:43

@Lwrenagain

All of that sounds incredible

MinnieMountain · 15/11/2023 07:02

Pork pie and pickled onions. DH always has this.

Luckydog7 · 15/11/2023 07:03

We do victorian breakfast of pork pie and sliced tongue (yes beef tongue) served with decent bread, Chutney, mustard and lashings of tea and coffee. Apparently we had a great great great grandmother who was housekeeper of an estate and she emulated the masters family.

Raspberry coulis with berries? Can all be made from frozen berries and served with natural or vanilla yoghurt and granola.

Tortilla?

Thingamebobwotsit · 15/11/2023 07:45

This is a delightful thread. A proper breakfast at a leisurely pace is one of my absolute favourite things.

Coco pops with Baileys

That actually sounds really freaking good.

French toast made with slice brioche with maple syrup, bacon, blueberries? Dusted with icing sugar

Brie, bacon & cranberry toasties

Soda bread toast, loads of butter with some basil, parmesan & creme frache scrambled eggs, if feeling fancy some herby/peppery sausages on the side

Big versions of pigs in blankets, before fully cooked glaze with honey and mustard, then pop them in a part baked baguette topped with some kind of festive chutney and make posh festive hot dogs.

Croissants or sourdough with sautéed herby & garlic mushrooms with wilted spinach in a creamy sauce, creme frache with a little bit of whole grain mustard in the sauce, then top with sliced goats cheese and oven cook on gentle heat until goats cheese is cooked and melted. Top with some balsamic glaze or red onion chutney.

Asda currently have a beautiful cherry and amaretto jam and some sourdough crumpets with a Potato hash bake covered in a sage butter and brie as a side dish, sweet and savory.

Also what I like doing for Christmas breakfasts is a slow cooker hot chocolate station with a way of pimping it up, so a black forest syrup or baileys cream or something to make it more adult? Also topping the cream with a chocolate coin is completely necessary!

Definitely a plate of stollen slices or mince pies and box of festive biscuits next to the hot drinks and if you're able to some of the copella apple and elderflower or fresh orange.
If you've guests who don't like the dried fruit based sweets such as traditional Xmas cake, then some vanilla French fancies or slices of festive Swiss roll.
(Or get friends with better taste buds!)

What time would you like us round? There'll be 6 of us?! Fantastic suggestions, thank you

Some lovely options here which I will be trying for dinner for the next week. Don't discount buying a waffle iron though. They are so much fun and a bit of theatre. Butternut squash waffles are delicious.

I'm American and pancakes can be made ahead, even frozen and heated morning of. Just wrap in foil and keep them warm in the oven until you're ready to serve. Use oil in the pan instead of butter so the edges will stay crispy. We have them all the time with a side of scrambled eggs for protein, and many times topped with fruit and whipped cream. Sometimes I add some pumpkin pie spice or just cinnamon to the batter. Always a big splash of vanilla too.

That's good to know, thank you. Being able to make ahead makes them a definite option.

I'd discounted crepes as i'm not sure whether I could make them in advance? Don't really want people to eat in a relay. Can you make them ahead and reheat?

You can make ahead and then heat in the microwave.

@Lwrenagain What fabulous ideas, my mouth is watering.

Mustbethemulledwine · 15/11/2023 09:09

I make two breakfast bakes, one savoury and one sweet. Keeps everyone happy! Assemble the night before, refrigerate, and cook Christmas morning.

Sweet one is the French toast bake (or casserole as the recipe calls it). We serve it with fresh fruit and squirty cream.

Savoury one is sausage bake.

Thinly sliced ham and havarti cheese on croissant, with a touch of mustard, is an oddly amazing taste sensation.

Filling but not too heavy.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/11/2023 09:48

Best we ever had - whole family loved it - was mixed mushrooms in a creamy/sherry sauce on toast. Lots of recipes online.

Brie, cranberry and bacon toasties with a fresh fruit salad

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 15/11/2023 10:25

We are doing Brie, rocket and cranberry sauce seeded bagels.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2023 10:38

Coco pops with Baileys

I know what I'm having Christmas Eve morning Grin

CactusPat · 15/11/2023 11:13

A great thread - for the strata pros (first time I’ve heard of it but I’m now converted) - how do you make it ahead of time? Keep egg mix separate in fridge then assembly job in a.m.? And bread flat on bottom or all mixed through like bread and butter pudding?

madeinthe80z · 15/11/2023 12:58

This is an Amazon g breakfast pudding! Can make well ahead and bung in the oven when ready!

OMGitsnotgood · 15/11/2023 13:45

so many fabulous ideas, thank you.

To add a couple of my own, last year for Christmas breakfast , I put ham and thinly sliced cheese in croissants and baked til the cheese melted, and more croissants with mincemeat and baked til heated through and topped with sifted icing sugar

@CactusPat you assemble everything the night before including adding the egg custard mixture to the baking dish with other ingredients. That lets it all soak in and meld. In morning, take it out the fridge before cooking so it can come to room temperature.

Alternatively, I’ve made them the same morning / just before baking. Just let the bread soak up the goodness for about 20 minutes or so.

EDIT: And yes, strata is basically a savoury bread and butter pudding.
