When dd1 was only 2, a BiL (quite a lot younger than dh) gave her a book entitled Cuba For Beginners.
It was all cartoon style, but quite obviously for politically-minded adults.
When I laughed he said, ‘Well, it does say for beginners…’

For years he gave dds nothing, but did finally make up for it when they were mid teens - with 2 x crisp £50 notes each. And that was ages ago, so to say they were delighted is putting it mildly.

Roller blades. DD was 7 months old. Got shin pads with them, but no helmet as "we couldn't carry any more shopping".

Goinggoinggone12345 · 12/11/2023 12:19

For a two year old with anger management issues: a child sized metal working saw, hammer and screwdriver. Strangely they vanished almost immediately 🤔

When DD was 6 months old MIL bought her this massive wooden pram that quite clearly said 3 years +.
We couldn’t even fit it in the car to get it home and she rang daily to ask when we were picking it up (300+ miles away). When we did eventually get it home it was massively dangerous as she kept trying to climb in it and it would immediately tip over. It was also very very heavy so not actually suitable to use as a pram. Hid it, never used it.

I have a “crap gifts only” arrangement with a DFriend. The same year he bought me a meat thermometer with a picture of the Pope on it, he bought 3 year old DS an ice axe.

It still lives on a very, very high shelf.

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/11/2023 20:07

Two bottles of alcoholic lemonade. She was 5.

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/11/2023 20:09

Oh and another, my DD's paternal grandma only bought things from jumble sales despite being extremely wealthy. It was very odd. So when DD was about 4, Grandma sent a stinky, bobbly, very well worn jumper in a fetching shade of lime with a note that "she'd grow into it". It was a size 14. She's still not grown into it at 25 🙈

A handmade baby blanket. Which sounds like a lovely gift and we were thrilled to receive it until I unfolded it and saw that the pattern was uncannily reminiscent of patchwork patterned swastikas.

GreenCereal · 12/11/2023 20:14

We were visiting ILs on the other side of the world, and they gave DD a Sylvanian house. It was handed over with a "I know you won't be able to take this home but..."

Of course it was me who had to deal with telling DD it wouldn't fit in our suitcases

CoffeeChocolateWine · 12/11/2023 20:37

So not exactly what you're asking as they weren't given as presents, my DSis' children are a few years older than mine so she always used to give me hand-down toys and clothes. I used to dread it and it became a standing joke with me and DH the utter crap she would give us. Toys that's were so broken she had taped them back together; a building set that was meant to be put together using nuts and bolts but every single nut and bolt was missing so it was just random bits of plastic; peg puzzles with only one peg; dressing up costumes that stank to big heaven and were ripped and badly stained; one shoe etc etc. You get the picture. And it was always presented to us I screwed up in a black bin bag and that is generally where they stayed!

In terms of inappropriate presents, it's not so much that they were inappropriate but my ILs just used to bring some enormous colourful plastic toy or game for DC every time they came to visit. We don't have a huge house so didn't have the space for them and they were never thing DC were interested in playing with so they would just be there collecting dust and taking up huge amounts of spaces 🙄

CoffeeChocolateWine · 12/11/2023 20:39

*Typos galore! Apologies!

BettyOBarley · 12/11/2023 21:02

My mum gave 8yr old DD some LOL doll socks, which was great as DD loved lol.
Just a shame they were size 18-24 months..... 😂

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 12/11/2023 21:17

A make up set for my 3 year old DD

Trulywonderful · 12/11/2023 21:19

A children's book written by Katie Price

SM4713 · 12/11/2023 21:37

My estranged nan bought my 5yr old brother a dart set. Not a suction type kiddies one, but a full sized pub style one with sharp darts, along with a complete knife throwing set! 😕

Equimum · 12/11/2023 22:01

Last Christmas, DILs gifted our 10yo a 'quiz game' for age 3+ with questions such as 'what shape is this dinner plate' and 'can you point to the flower?'. He's a very bright boys and we were all totally perplexed!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 12/11/2023 22:16

An uncle that lived abroad bought baby ds1 an age 5 t shirt and an action figure based on some kind of comic book rhino man. It had a huge poke your eye out horn on its forehead. I called it the dick head and "accidentally" lost it a couple of weeks later. Never bought him, or ds2, anything again. I think he was a bit scared of kids really.

Easterdaffsx · 12/11/2023 23:33

My ex MIL bought my DS who was at the time about 14 a periscope thing for peeking under door frames amd spying. It was genuinely a toy and he nearly died of embarrassment !
He big sisters seriously pulled his leg !

DD age 5 - GM gave her a book about the life of the the Queen Mother - oh joy!

😂😂😂

Franticbutterfly · 12/11/2023 23:43

A 6ft teddy for the baby to "lean on" (it would've suffocated the baby had it have fallen on her).

Ihateslugs · 13/11/2023 00:23

My FIL was a very talented engineer and decided to make my daughter a dolls house with battery operated lighting, remote control opening windows and various other gadgets. It took him a long time to complete and by the time my daughter was given it, she had grown out of playing with dolls - she never really played with then though as she was a more active child who just loved animals.

It never really got played with although for a while it became a very up market stable for her toy horses! Grandad got very cross though when he saw the wear and tear on the house, nothing serious, just normal play from a 7 year old using her imagination to make a riding stable! He took it off her and we never saw it again!

Not sure about unsuitable, but the moment I saw my eldest daughters think “wtf?” and then quickly smile and day thanks politely was when their father and then stepmother, who had gone on and on and on for ages about how their 14th birthday presents was something she’d got at Disney for them (they took their two children to Disney, he paid, and didn’t take the girls) handed them gifts and they opened a ruler each. A very pretty Disney ruler, but a ruler all the same.

Gingerninja4 · 13/11/2023 06:17

Xmil sent some football boots for Ds which you think sounds a good gift untill you know ds is a disabled and in a wheelchair
Wins prize for tasteless

Hurts more that the ex brought them with him on a visit and gave them to him ,
Thankfully both xmil amd xH stopped any pretense of caring and not bothered with seeing DC for years

jodes88 · 13/11/2023 16:09

I had an Aunt who used to bulk buy stuff and then distribute them as gifts. Gifts over the years as a child included sunglasses for Christmas and I have always worn actual glasses, a men's XL belt when I was about 5, slippers in a toddler size when I was 10 and padded coat hangers through the post no less for my 16th. What made it funnier is that my Cousin who is 3 months older always got the same so I knew what was coming 🤣

Caledoniadreaming · 13/11/2023 16:12

Quantum Physics for children book for my DS. He was 9 months old.

Mumhangingon · 13/11/2023 16:14

This is the thread for me! My DH's uncle has bought me a rape alarm for Christmas... THREE TIMES!! In the 14 Christmas' we have been together. The numerous fire extinguishers we got last year are a close 2nd though lol. He buys very odd gifts.
