When dd1 was only 2, a BiL (quite a lot younger than dh) gave her a book entitled Cuba For Beginners.
It was all cartoon style, but quite obviously for politically-minded adults.
When I laughed he said, ‘Well, it does say for beginners…’

For years he gave dds nothing, but did finally make up for it when they were mid teens - with 2 x crisp £50 notes each. And that was ages ago, so to say they were delighted is putting it mildly.

MIL insisting on buying dark chocolate Easter/Christmas chocolate figures when repeatedly told milk or white or they won’t get eaten. She knew best.

DSIL who had DC around our DC's ages always gave our DC things that were too small for them, I suspect they had been gifted to her own DC and were too small for them too. Other DSIL used to buy them really lovely clothes when DC were tiny, we were very grateful indeed, but now she seems seems to have lost interest in them as they've grown out of the cute adorable photographable phase and seem fixated on buying them gloves and hats which will fit but they won't wear. There is a routine trip to charity shop after Christmas, someone will appreciate them hopefully.

DD age 5 - GM gave her a book about the life of the the Queen Mother - oh joy!

User562377 · 11/11/2023 16:56

When my kids were 2 and 3 my brother bought them each one of those battery operated mini cars that you can sit inside. Not one to share, one each. The kids were overjoyed but since we were living in a 2 bed mid-terrace on a busy road they were absolutely no use at all. Nowhere to store them, no-where to use them.

A book featuring Shakespeare's plays. Now, it was specifically designed for children so I think the plays were simpler/abridged versions. But even so......

If it was for kids, what was wrong with this? The Austen ones are brilliant!

when DS1 was little he had size 5 infant shoe size feet, his uncle bought him size 5 adult shoe size slippers and didn’t in any way look at them and think they looked a bit big for him. These were not ordered online by accident, he got them in a shop, wrapped them and handed them over in person.

Thatsshallot1967 · 11/11/2023 17:43

When DS was little he was obsessed with wires, plugs and all things electric. We were very careful to explain the dangers of plugging things in and had socket covers throughout the house.

One year, for his birthday, my darling, late DM presented my four year old with a 4-way extension cable reel. He was delighted of course. Me not so much.

fernsandlilies · 11/11/2023 17:52

😳😳when DS was about 5 he took a present to a little friend's birthday party which was a Fun with Maths Pop-Up book. DS liked that sort of thing, other DC not so much. wtf was I thinking...?

So many. I typed a long post and deleted it because they’re too outing!

Mustbethemulledwine · 12/11/2023 06:21

Last christmas, while DD was 6 months old, was gifted several items of clothing from the same relative for children aged 2-3 years.

My mother
A crop top for 5 year old dd,that read 'hands off my tits' written on the front

A padded bra-she was 7

Gloves for ds (aged about 8) with huge cannabis leaves on them

A pack of boxers for another ds with 'keep your hands off my nuts' all over them-he was 4 (they where for a 15 year old)

endless,'I saw this at the car boot so bought it'

Mainly broken, dirty, torn, tatty, babyish, nothing they liked or something with all the pieces missing

I swear she only did it because she wanted me to look like I was neglecting them/fill my house with crap and it would never look tidy/so she could tell everyone how nasty I was as she was a loving nan,but I was a bitch who never let them have what she bought

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 12/11/2023 07:06

My uncle gave my DD a terrifying looking china doll when she was about 18months old. He's an odd sort and probably picked it out of someone's tip whilst out walking the dog. We kept it for a few months just to freak each other out putting it in random places in the house.

riotlady · 12/11/2023 10:14

My lovely FIL once took a load of rocks (not pebbles, ROCKS), drilled a hole through them and strung them together with blue fishing twine for then 2yo DD. It weighed a tonne, it was an absolute weapon and she would have completely brained herself if she’d swung it around. He must have seen my face cos since then he asks us for ideas!!!

Mmmmdanone · 12/11/2023 10:20

Not unsuitable but very weird- my ex mil once gave my 3 year old for Christmas a gift wrapped pack of plain white tesco pants. If they has been character pants fine, but plain basic ones. Just odd!

Hereforthebunfights · 12/11/2023 10:32

My SIL bought my 3 year old a hat stand.

DumpedByText · 12/11/2023 10:36

My mum bought her 3 granddaughter's age 11, 14 and 14 a set of M&S Lily of the valley handcreams. She genuinely thought they'd use them!

NorthCliffs · 12/11/2023 10:39

My husband's grandmother got him a Playboy Easter egg in the 80s, complete with fluffy tail and bunny ears which he duly donned and hopped around the living room. He was 6.

My XH gave one of our daughters a set of toy plastic musical instruments. She was 18 and it wasn't even a suitable joke gift as she's not at all musical. And a friend of mine once gave me his old ice axe with the perfectly straight faced observation that I might like it for one of the kids, who were all tots and tweens at the time.

CesareBorgia · 12/11/2023 10:41

Just laughed aloud at this!

Pacificisolated · 12/11/2023 10:43

My DD was gifted a lovely set of play dough and kinetic sand for her first birthday. All very clearly labelled ‘3+’. BIL and SIL let her get it out at their house. She ate it.

When DD was very little MIL used to be terrible for buying already cheap clothes on sale in sizes that were at least 6-12 months too large and somehow only ever fitted during the wrong season.

Oh, I could have been guilty of buying similar if I'd not seen this! My 6 year old loves putting hand gel on (not so much now). Would girls not use hand cream ?

Little sharp Kukri daggers from Malaya. I hid them.
